For a newly opened LEGO set, use LEGO’s official replacement service: choose Missing Pieces when an element was absent from the box, or Broken Bricks when a piece is cracked, broken or otherwise damaged. Have the set number and the piece’s element ID ready. For older sets or extra parts, LEGO’s Pick a Brick service lets you buy individual elements when they are still listed.
Choose the correct LEGO replacement route
The right route depends on what happened to the piece and whether the set is newly opened. Selecting the closest description helps LEGO identify the correct service case and avoids paying for a part that should be covered by the set-support process.

Use one official replacement request for each affected set. If several sets have problems, submit separate requests rather than combining unrelated set numbers into one case.

Find the set number
The set number is printed on the box and in the building instructions. It is the fastest way for LEGO’s system to narrow the parts list, so locate it before opening the replacement form. A set name alone can be ambiguous, especially when similarly named versions were released in different years.

Read the parts inventory in the instructions
Use the inventory pages in the instruction booklet to record the element ID, color, quantity and the part’s plain-language description. The element ID is more precise than a description such as “small black plate,” because several pieces can look similar while having different dimensions, stud layouts or connection features.
Record the quantity for every missing item. If two identical elements are absent, enter two rather than creating separate requests for each one. Keep the booklet nearby while you work through the form so you can verify the number and color against the printed inventory.
Inspect a damaged piece without discarding it
For a cracked, warped or broken element, keep the physical piece. Describe where the defect is located and what it prevents you from doing—for example, a split clip that no longer holds a bar or a plate that arrived fractured through the center. LEGO says it may request the part for closer inspection and may occasionally ask for a receipt, so retain both the piece and any purchase documentation until the case is resolved.

Submit an official replacement request
- Open the LEGO replacement-parts hub. Start from LEGO’s replacement-parts area rather than a general customer-service form.
- Choose the service that matches the problem. Select Missing Pieces for an absent element or Broken Bricks for a supplied element that is cracked, broken or otherwise damaged.
- Enter the set number. Use the number from the box or instruction booklet, checking every digit before continuing.
- Identify the element. Select or enter the element ID from the instruction inventory, then confirm the color and quantity. Add a plain-language description if the form requests one.
- Explain damage precisely. For a Broken Bricks case, state whether the part is cracked, snapped, bent, discolored or unable to connect. Keep the damaged element available in case LEGO asks for it.
- Review contact and delivery details. Check the shipping address and email address. LEGO says it emails customers when replacement pieces are on the way, so an incorrect email address can hide the confirmation.
- Submit one request per set. If multiple sets are affected, repeat the process for each set number.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the confirmation email or case details until the parcel arrives and the replacement has been checked against the instructions.
If the automated search does not show the missing element, LEGO asks for a complete description, the element ID from the instruction parts list and the set number. Supplying all three gives customer service enough information to investigate a part that is not indexed in the initial search.
What happens after submission
LEGO’s delivery-timeframes page gives operational estimates that vary by country. These are estimates, not guaranteed arrival dates, and replacement-piece shipments are not trackable.

LEGO’s terms separately describe a 7–10-day target for the continental United States and a 17–22-day target for Canada. Because those figures differ from the current delivery-timeframes page, treat the delivery-timeframes page as the practical operational estimate and do not promise an exact arrival date to yourself or another builder.

If the parcel seems late
- Check the email address used in the request for LEGO’s confirmation or dispatch message.
- Verify that the address on the request was complete and current.
- Allow for the full country estimate before treating the shipment as overdue.
- Remember that the replacement parcel has no tracking number, so a carrier-tracking page will not show its progress.
- If the stated window has passed, contact LEGO customer service with the set number and the original request details rather than submitting duplicate cases immediately.
Use Pick a Brick for older sets and extra elements
LEGO’s Pick a Brick service is the official paid fallback when you are repairing an older set, want spare pieces, or need an additional element rather than a replacement for a newly opened box. The service can search by color, category, keyword, piece name or piece number, and it also supports searches by set number.
Search methods
- Piece number or element ID: the most targeted method when you have the instruction inventory number.
- Set number: useful when you want to see elements associated with a particular set.
- Piece name or keyword: helpful when the printed inventory uses a familiar descriptive name.
- Color and category: useful for narrowing a visual search when the number is unreadable or unavailable.
Pick a Brick has different inventories for its Bestsellers and Standard selections, so a part absent from one selection may appear in the other. The page states that up to 999 of each piece can be ordered at one time. That is an order-limit statement, not a promise that 999 units are in stock.
Before paying, compare the displayed element with the instruction image and verify color, dimensions and connection points. A visually similar piece can still be incompatible if its stud count, thickness, axle hole, clip or hinge geometry differs.

When LEGO no longer lists the exact part
Some older or discontinued elements will not appear in Pick a Brick. A third-party listing can be practical in that situation, but compatibility and authenticity become your responsibility. Do not rely only on a photograph or a title such as “LEGO-compatible.”
Compatibility checklist
- Match the exact LEGO element or part number whenever one is available.
- Confirm the color under normal lighting; names such as gray, light gray and dark gray can refer to different LEGO colors.
- Compare the complete shape, including underside features that may not be visible in a listing’s main photo.
- Check connection geometry: stud spacing, anti-studs, clips, bars, hinges, pins, axles and tube openings.
- Review the seller’s photos, description, return policy and condition notes.
- Distinguish a genuine LEGO element from an unbranded compatible substitute when the set’s appearance or fit matters.
Availability, prices and seller quality on third-party marketplaces change frequently; verify them at the time of purchase. Treat an inexpensive listing as a lead to verify, not as proof that it is the correct replacement.

Troubleshoot common replacement problems
The set number is missing
Check every panel of the box and the first or final pages of the instruction booklet. If the box is gone and the booklet has been separated from the set, identify the number from the original purchase record or another reliable set record before submitting; do not substitute a similar set’s number.

The inventory shows several similar pieces
Compare color, length, width, stud pattern and underside geometry. Use the element ID rather than selecting the first item that looks close. For transparent, printed or decorated pieces, check the decoration as well as the base shape.
The missing element is not returned by the automated search
Use the complete description, element ID and set number that LEGO requests for an unlisted part. Include quantity and color, and describe any distinctive print or molding detail in plain language.
The replacement does not fit
Stop building at the affected step and compare the replacement with the instruction inventory and the original piece, if available. A wrong color can be obvious, but an incorrect stud layout or connector type may only become apparent during assembly. Recheck the element ID and contact LEGO with the request details if the official shipment appears mismatched.
A damaged piece fails during building
Do not force it into place, because pressure can enlarge a crack or damage neighboring elements. Photographing the defect is optional, but retain the piece and receipt because LEGO may request both the physical element and proof of purchase.
A quick decision checklist
- Was the element absent when you opened a new set? Choose Missing Pieces.
- Was it supplied but cracked, broken or otherwise defective? Choose Broken Bricks and keep the piece.
- Do you have the set number and element ID? Gather both before opening the form.
- Are multiple sets involved? Submit one request for each set.
- Is the set old or do you want extras? Search Pick a Brick by element, color, keyword or set number.
- Is the exact element unavailable there? Verify every specification before considering a third-party listing.
- Are you waiting for an official shipment? Use the country estimate, watch email and remember that the parcel is not trackable.
The practical rule
For a newly opened set, use LEGO’s service first: Missing Pieces for an absent element and Broken Bricks for a damaged one. Accurate identification—especially the set number and element ID—prevents most replacement errors. Pick a Brick is the appropriate paid route for older sets and extras, while third-party buying should be reserved for cases where LEGO no longer lists the exact part and only after the element, color and connection geometry have been checked.
