To replace an Apple Pencil tip, hold the Pencil steady and turn the old tip counterclockwise until it comes off. Set a compatible replacement on the exposed mount and turn it clockwise until it feels snug; stop when it no longer turns easily. Do not force or overtighten it.
Replace the tip in four steps
- Prepare. Have a compatible replacement tip ready and hold the Pencil body securely.
- Remove the old tip. Grip it between two fingers and turn it counterclockwise until it unscrews.
- Check the mount. Look at the exposed threaded mounting point. Make sure it appears intact and that no broken piece remains.
- Install the replacement. Place it on the exposed metal prong and turn it clockwise with your fingers until snug. Stop when it no longer turns easily; do not keep tightening.
Check compatibility before buying
Apple’s US store lists its Apple Pencil Tips four-pack as compatible with Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple Pencil (1st generation). The listed US price was $19.00 when checked on October 4, 2026; price and availability can change.

When not to keep turning
If the tip is broken, stuck, or the exposed mounting assembly looks damaged, stop. The normal removal procedure does not establish a safe way to extract a broken fragment, and prying could damage the Pencil. Contact Apple Support or a qualified repair provider instead.

Keep the tip and screen clean
Apple advises keeping the tip clean because dirt and small particles can cause excessive tip wear or damage the iPad screen. Apple also says a worn tip should be replaced to avoid screen damage.
