For many leave-in scalp serums, the wash-day order is shampoo, rinse-out conditioner, then serum applied directly to the scalp. The details vary by product: some call for towel-dried hair, while others allow wet or dry hair, and between-wash use is not universal. Follow the directions on your specific bottle.
Where scalp serum fits on wash day
- Shampoo and rinse. Cleanse your hair, then rinse thoroughly.
- Condition and rinse. Use rinse-out conditioner as directed; the serum examples discussed here are applied after conditioner, not mixed into it.
- Prepare your hair as directed. If the label calls for damp hair, towel-dry first. Make several parts or sections to expose the scalp.
- Apply to the scalp. Place the directed amount along the exposed scalp rather than coating the hair lengths. Massage only if the instructions say to.
- Leave it in or rinse it out according to the label. A product described as leave-in should not be rinsed unless its directions say otherwise.
Wet, damp, or dry hair?
There is no single rule for every formula. Kérastase’s Genesis Serum Fortifiant directions specify towel-dried hair after shampooing and conditioning, and also permit application to a dry scalp between washes. Pantene says its Abundant & Strong Daily Scalp & Root Serum can be used daily on wet or dry hair. The Ordinary’s Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density directions identify it as leave-in and say not to wash the hair or scalp after application.

Can you apply scalp serum between wash days?
Only do so when the product’s directions allow it. Kérastase explicitly permits use on a dry scalp between washes. Pantene describes daily use on wet or dry hair. Other products may specify a bedtime or overnight routine; that does not make overnight use a general rule for all scalp serums.

How to layer scalp serum with oil and other leave-ins
Apply a scalp treatment to the scalp, and keep products meant for lengths and ends focused there. Aveda’s Scalp Solutions Overnight Scalp Renewal Serum directions say to apply directly to the scalp at bedtime and distinguish it from a separate overnight serum for lengths and ends.
Layering order depends on the formula. indē wild’s Moonlight Growth Scalp Serum directions say to apply the serum before oil when layering those products. The brand’s named Champi ritual gives a different sequence—oil, shampoo, conditioner, then serum—which is a distinct routine, not a universal layering instruction. Do not assume serum-before-oil applies to other brands.

What to check on your bottle
- Whether the serum is meant for damp, wet, or dry hair.
- Whether it goes on after conditioner and whether the conditioner should be rinsed out first.
- How often to apply it, and whether use between wash days is allowed.
- How much to use, whether to massage, and whether to leave it in or rinse it out.
- Whether the product belongs on the scalp or on lengths and ends, and any formula-specific instructions for layering with oil or other leave-ins.
