Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A render-batch editor needs to distinguish a media file from each place that file is used. In a case study by Humza Tareen, a batch builder’s duplicate-prevention rules blocked both deliberate repeats and a clip reused across variants. The reported fix added explicit repeated instances and a separate “pin to all” behavior—two choices that solve different editing needs.
Why the batch builder blocked a valid clip placement
Tareen describes a five-variant batch pairing one hook, H1112W75, with five visuals, H113V1 through H113V5. The library picker excluded a file ID as soon as it appeared in the batch, displaying an “already in this batch” tooltip. That rule prevented the same hook from being added to the other variant rows.

A second client-side rule, called dedupSolos, kept at most one unstacked row for each source asset in a slot. Manually inserting another copy could seem to work, but the extra row could vanish after an ungroup, unstack, or remove action, along with edits made to it. In this case, cleanup logic treated reuse of an asset as accidental duplication even when the editor meant to place it again.
Separate the source asset from its placements
The core design change in the case study is to model two different things: the underlying media file and an instance of that file in a batch. A single source asset can have multiple deliberate placements. Those placements may need their own position and edits, while still referring back to the same media.

That distinction avoids making asset identity carry information about user intent. Duplicate prevention can still apply to accidental clones, but it should not erase an instance explicitly created by an editor.
Choose between a repeated instance and “pin to all”
The reported implementation provides two related behaviors. They differ in what the editor is asking for and how the batch represents that choice.

| Behavior | Intent | Representation | Placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat | Add another deliberate instance of a clip. | An explicit row linked to the root source row using a duplicateOfId reference. |
The editor chooses where the additional row goes. |
| Pin to all | Show a clip in every variant lane. | A shared pinned reference interpreted across the lanes, rather than separate materialized copies. | The editor selects a first or last position across the lanes. |
Use Repeat for another independently placed instance
The case study describes an explicitInstance flag that marks an intentional repeat so cleanup will not remove it as an accidental duplicate. The repeated row also carries duplicateOfId, linking it to the root source row and preserving the relationship to the underlying media.

Pinning expresses a different request: put the clip in every variant lane at a selected position. According to Tareen, new variants inherit the pinned clip automatically. The implementation interprets the shared lane by removing the pinned reference from the individual lanes, dropping lanes that become empty, and reinserting the clip at the chosen first or last position. Downstream calculations and submission use that lane interpretation.

Audit every path that creates or removes an instance
The first implementation did not cover every way an editor could ask for a repeat. Tareen reports that dropping a file already present in a slot—the interaction he considered the most natural—failed to create the new instance metadata. The follow-up detected a freshly dropped file using a filename-and-size fingerprint before its Drive ID was available, then narrowed cleanup so it removed only implicit, automatically generated clones rather than independently added repeats.
The case study also reports issues discovered during the work: a duplicate whose background upload was still in flight, repeated finalization of rows backed by the same Drive file, filename-collision checks occurring after early returns, and preview ordering while a clip was pinned. These are reminders that instance semantics affect asynchronous file handling, validation, cleanup, and presentation—not just the picker.

Tareen says the first fix’s description incorrectly claimed to handle an older auto-clone path; he retracted that claim after checking the path. That correction matters because a fix should describe the code paths it actually covers, not merely the behavior it was intended to address.
What the backend account does—and does not—establish
Tareen says the render backend accepted arrays of clip IDs and honored repeated IDs by position. He also says the prepared-clip cache keyed entries by clip ID and an encode-parameter hash, allowing one encode to be reused when a clip appeared in five variants. These are the author’s descriptions; the endpoints, cache implementation, and pull requests were not independently reviewed for this article, so they should not be treated as independently verified backend behavior or a measured performance result.
The engineering lesson
Duplicate checks are useful when they prevent accidental copies, but asset identity alone cannot tell whether a repeated placement is a mistake. A robust batch model records the editor’s intent, links each explicit instance to its source, and ensures that every creation, cleanup, validation, preview, and submission path respects that distinction. As Tareen puts it: “A constraint that made sense in isolation can still be the wrong constraint once you ask what the user is actually trying to do.”
