Try Repair before Reset in Windows app settings. Microsoft says Repair can fix an app without losing data; Reset returns it to its default state and may remove app data. WhatsApp does not document exactly what Windows Reset does to its linked-device data or sign-in, so make sure you can access WhatsApp on your phone before proceeding.
Repair WhatsApp first in Windows app settings
The labels and menu availability depend on your Windows version and how WhatsApp was installed. If you see an Advanced options page for WhatsApp, use Repair before Reset.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find WhatsApp and open its More options menu.
- Select Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Open WhatsApp and check whether the issue is fixed. If Repair is unavailable or did not help, return to Advanced options and select Reset.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select WhatsApp, then Advanced options, if present.
- Select Repair, if available. If it is missing or does not fix the problem, select Reset.
Microsoft notes that Repair, Change, or Modify options are not available for every app. If WhatsApp has no Advanced options or Repair control, you have not necessarily missed a setting; continue with WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance below or reinstall from an official source.
What Windows Repair and Reset can change
Microsoft describes Repair as an attempt to fix an app without losing data. Reset returns the app to its default state and may remove app data. Reset is an app-level action; it is not the Windows Reset this PC procedure. Microsoft’s general guidance does not specify the exact effect of Reset on WhatsApp’s local data or linked-device sign-in.

WhatsApp says that linked devices—including WhatsApp on Windows—cannot back up or restore chat history. Its Help Center directs users to use their phone for chat backup and restore, and says chat history is not stored on WhatsApp’s servers. The official guidance does not establish whether Windows Reset clears WhatsApp’s local cache, signs you out, or changes which messages appear after you link the device again. Do not count on a PC reset to preserve or recover linked-device chat history.
Try WhatsApp’s connection fixes if Repair does not help
For connection problems, WhatsApp recommends checking that the computer is online and looking for a Computer not connected banner. If the computer is connected, its suggested sequence is:
- Quit and restart WhatsApp Desktop.
- Sign out of WhatsApp and sign back in.
- Install the most up-to-date WhatsApp version.
- Restart the computer.
- Try another network or a mobile hotspot.
- If the issue remains, uninstall WhatsApp and download it again.
These steps are WhatsApp’s guidance for connection trouble; they do not establish that every crash or launch failure has the same cause. For a fresh installation, WhatsApp’s Windows download page directs users to the Microsoft Store. WhatsApp’s desktop overview also lists its download page and the Microsoft Store as download sources. Avoid third-party app-download sites.

Check Windows requirements and call permissions
WhatsApp’s Windows download page lists Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 or later as a system requirement. This is not a prerequisite for the Repair or Reset menu itself. For voice or video call problems, WhatsApp says the computer needs an active internet connection and audio output; calls also require a microphone, and video calls require a camera. WhatsApp must have permission to use the microphone and camera.

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 remains usable, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for it. This support status is separate from the steps for repairing WhatsApp.
