If you’re recording a new clip, iPhone 16 or later can automatically reduce wind noise when you record in Spatial Audio or Stereo. For a video you already shot, try Photos’ Audio Mix if it was recorded with Spatial Audio; otherwise, iPhone editing tools can mute or reduce a noisy section, but Apple’s documented iPhone controls do not include a dedicated wind-noise remover.
Reduce wind noise while recording a new video
On iPhone 16 or later, Apple says wind noise is automatically reduced when video is recorded using Spatial Audio or Stereo. This is a recording-time feature; changing the setting will not repair a clip that is already saved. Apple also says the reduction can be turned off. Apple’s sound recording options guide lists the setting path:

- Open Settings > Camera > Record Sound.
- Choose Spatial Audio or Stereo from the formats available on your phone.
- Check the options shown on your device; available formats and wording can vary by model and software version.
Apple’s current guide describes this behavior for iPhone 16 or later. It does not quantify how much wind will be reduced, so results can vary with the recording conditions.

Consider the microphone and the environment
Apple documents that supported AirPods can serve as a microphone while recording video in supported camera apps. That is an alternate input for future footage, not a documented wind filter: Apple does not say AirPods prevent wind noise or clean up a recording. Confirm that your iPhone, AirPods and camera app support the feature before relying on it. Apple’s guide to sound recording options provides the relevant compatibility details.

Try Audio Mix on an existing Spatial Audio video
Photos offers Audio Mix for videos recorded with Spatial Audio on supported iPhone models. Apple’s current support page lists iPhone 16 models, iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air as supporting Spatial Audio recording. Audio Mix can change the balance of recorded voices and background sound, but Apple does not describe it as a dedicated wind-removal feature or guarantee that it will eliminate wind. Apple’s video-editing guide describes the available modes.
- Open the video in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap Audio Mix.
- Select a mode and adjust its intensity slider. Compare the result with Standard and use a conservative adjustment if the audio starts to sound unnatural.
- Tap Done to save the edit.
| Audio Mix mode | What it does |
|---|---|
| Standard | Retains the original recording. |
| In-Frame | Reduces sounds and voices from sources outside the frame. |
| Studio | Reduces background sounds and reverb. It may help with some unwanted sound, but Apple does not promise that it removes wind. |
| Cinematic | Places voices on a front-facing track and environmental sounds in surround. |
The Audio Mix requirement matters: if the clip was not recorded with Spatial Audio, or the model does not support the feature, this Photos workflow may not be available. Device support and software features can change; check Apple’s guide for the current list.

Limit or silence a noisy section in iMovie on iPhone
Apple’s iMovie for iPhone documentation covers trimming, splitting, muting, deleting and changing the volume of audio clips. Those edits can contain a gust that occurs in a distinct section, but they do not separate wind from speech. Lowering volume reduces wanted sound along with the wind; muting or deleting a section removes its other audio too. Apple’s cited iPhone instructions do not document a dedicated background-noise reduction slider.
