You can equip one as a cosmetic, adjust its name and accessories, and see it react in supported experiences. Epic’s retrieved guidance does not establish the current button-by-button Locker procedure, so this guide explains what is confirmed and where to check the live controls.
What Sidekicks do in Fortnite
Epic introduced Sidekicks as companions that join players in Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, developer-made experiences and more. They react to their surroundings, but they do not detect enemies or items, according to the official Item Shop listing. Treat a Sidekick as a cosmetic companion, not a way to find loot or warn you about opponents.

Visibility depends on the experience. In Battle Royale, players see only their own team’s Sidekicks; visibility works differently in other experiences. Epic’s Sidekicks announcement describes their broader availability, but does not promise that every experience displays them in the same way.

How do I equip a Sidekick in Fortnite?
Equip a Sidekick through your Fortnite Locker, but check the current in-game interface or Epic Player Support for the exact steps. Epic’s retrieved sources confirm that Sidekicks are cosmetics but do not provide a verified sequence of Locker labels, buttons or platform-specific controls. Because menus can change, guessing at a path could send you to the wrong screen.

If you own a Sidekick but cannot find it in the Locker, use Epic’s Player Support topic, “What are Sidekicks, and can I use them in every Fortnite experience?”, for current availability and use information.
How do I customize my Fortnite Sidekick?
Epic distinguishes between physical traits and details you can change later. The physical traits you select are permanent; the Sidekick’s name and accessories can be changed. Hats and hoodies are examples of accessories that can be earned with Sidekick Points by spending time together. Review the appearance choices before confirming them, since a permanent trait selection is not the same as choosing a changeable accessory.

Epic’s linked Player Support article covers appearance customization, but the current procedural steps are not established here. Consult Epic’s appearance-customization support page for the latest instructions. Epic also says the same Sidekick cosmetic can be purchased more than once and assigned different appearances, but each owned customization must be unique; duplicate appearances are not allowed. See Epic’s guidance on purchasing the same Sidekick more than once.
Why can’t I see my Sidekick?
- You are in Battle Royale: the official listing says players see only their team’s Sidekicks. An opponent’s companion may not appear.
- You are in another experience: Sidekick visibility varies by experience, so being able to use one in Fortnite does not mean it will render everywhere.
- You are expecting gameplay help: Sidekicks do not detect enemies or items. Their reactions are companion behavior, not scouting signals.
How do I get a Sidekick?
Sidekicks are digital cosmetics sold for V-Bucks, and current stock and prices can change. Check the in-game Item Shop for what is available now; Epic’s live Item Shop listing is also a reference, but an old announcement is not proof that an item remains purchasable.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Epic’s October 30, 2025 announcement recorded a historical rollout: Peels was planned for the Battle Pass on November 1, Bonesy, Spike and Lil’ Raptor for the Shop on November 7, and owners of the Bonesy Back Bling were to receive Bonesy Sidekick. Those dates describe the original release schedule only, not current availability.

Owning and equipping a Sidekick cosmetic is different from placing one as an NPC in a creator-made island. Epic’s June 5, 2026 UEFN announcement says creators can use Sidekicks as scriptable NPCs through the NPC Spawner, standard NPC controls and Verse APIs. A Sidekick-specific reaction system supports behaviors such as following, fetching, fleeing, attacking and reacting. Licensed Sidekicks are excluded from NPC use.

UEFN customization is constrained by the selected Sidekick’s preset channels: Epic says there are four to eight, depending on the Sidekick. Examples include body shape, color and patterns, eye style, distinguishing features and outfit. Creators can set size, health and shield values, and whether regular weapons can damage the NPC; they cannot create an entirely new Sidekick from scratch.
Cosmetic Sync can make a configured NPC take the form of a joining player’s equipped Sidekick. Epic’s announcement also lists sleep, eat, react and action presets, plus happy, dance, emote, angry, worried and attack reaction states. It described Control Rig support as a later release, so confirm current UEFN documentation before relying on that feature.
