ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max: Which AI Subscription Is Better for Heavy Users?

ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max match at $100 and $200 per month, but their usage limits work differently. Compare features, pools and workflows before choosing.

Neither subscription is a universal winner for heavy users. At the closest monthly price matches, ChatGPT Pro 100 and Claude Max 5x each cost $100, while ChatGPT Pro 200 and Claude Max 20x each cost $200. But their usage systems are different: Anthropic describes Max as a multiplier of Claude Pro usage in a rolling five-hour session, while OpenAI sets allowances by plan, model and product. Choose by the models and workflows you rely on—and by what your own account shows you use—not by comparing “5x” or “20x” with a presumed message count.

How the prices and tiers compare

OpenAI’s listed monthly ChatGPT Pro tiers extend beyond the two price points that match Claude Max. Anthropic lists Max in two choices. The figures below are the vendors’ stated prices in 2026; Anthropic says its displayed prices exclude applicable tax and may change.

Subscription Listed monthly price What the vendor specifies
ChatGPT Pro 100 $100 Pro features and plan-specific usage allowances; see OpenAI’s Pro tier details.
Claude Max 5x $100 5x Claude Pro usage per five-hour session, with additional limits; see Anthropic’s Max plan and FAQ.
ChatGPT Pro 200 $200 More usage than Pro 100; plan-specific limits and features are described by OpenAI.
Claude Max 20x $200 20x Claude Pro usage per five-hour session, with additional limits; see Anthropic.
ChatGPT Pro 500 $500 OpenAI’s highest included usage among these three Pro tiers and the only one with Ultrafast, according to OpenAI.

The matching prices make a useful starting point, not an apples-to-apples quota comparison. Anthropic’s multiplier is relative to Claude Pro and applies per five-hour session; it is not a fixed number of prompts. OpenAI’s allowances depend on the plan, model and product, so a price match does not mean a matched amount of work.

What each subscription includes—and where limits remain

ChatGPT Pro

OpenAI says its Pro plans include Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory and file uploads. Limits differ by tier and model, and a model may become temporarily unavailable until its allowance resets. Eligible features may allow credits to extend usage after the included allowance is consumed, but credits do not extend every model or feature. OpenAI names Codex, ChatGPT Work, Word, Excel and PowerPoint as examples, subject to plan and account availability.

Model access is not synonymous with unlimited model use. OpenAI’s current model guidance says GPT-6 Pro is available on eligible Pro plans but explicitly states that a Pro subscription does not include unlimited GPT-6 Pro usage. Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex have distinct allowance arrangements, and the interaction between GPT-6 Pro and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro allowances differs between Pro 100 and Pro 200. Check the current OpenAI model guidance and your account’s usage display for the specifics that apply to you.

Claude Max

Anthropic describes Max as offering a choice of 5x or 20x more usage than Pro per five-hour session, higher output limits, early access to advanced features and priority access at high-traffic times. It also says additional usage limits apply. The five-hour allowance resets on a rolling window, and paid Claude plans also have weekly limits. Your usage pool is shared across Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, as well as Claude Code.

Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count for Max. Usage varies with conversation length and complexity, selected model and enabled features. A short exchange and a long, tool-heavy or context-rich session can consume the allowance differently. See Anthropic’s pricing FAQ for its current plan terms.

Which is the better fit for your workflow?

Choose by the models and features you actually use

If your daily work depends on ChatGPT features such as image creation, deep research, file uploads or the Codex workflow, compare the relevant Pro tier’s limits and account display with your normal demand. If you use Claude across chat and Claude Code, remember that those activities draw from one Claude paid-plan pool. The deciding question is not which brand sounds more generous; it is whether the subscription’s specific models and tools cover your recurring tasks.

Consider how your usage is pooled

Claude Max’s five-hour and weekly limits apply across its web, desktop, mobile and coding surfaces. That makes cross-device use straightforward, but a burst of intensive work in one surface can affect what remains for another. OpenAI separates arrangements across Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex, and model-specific allowances can interact differently by tier. If you switch between products during a busy day, map your work to the relevant allowance rather than assuming all usage comes from one universal bucket.

Account for long sessions, output and busy periods

For Claude, long or complex conversations, model choice and features affect how quickly the shared allowance is used; Max also offers higher output limits and priority access at high-traffic times. For ChatGPT, the relevant constraint may be a particular model or product allowance, and a model can be unavailable until its allowance resets. A heavy user should track which task causes interruptions, how often they happen and whether they occur in a particular tool or model before moving up a tier.

Decide whether a fallback is acceptable

OpenAI credits can extend usage for some eligible features after included usage is exhausted, but not across the board. Anthropic says heavy coding users can use pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account as an alternative to relying only on Claude Code’s shared plan pool. These are different fallback arrangements, not equivalent add-ons: check eligibility, billing and the tools involved before counting either as backup capacity.

A practical way to choose

  1. List your peak-week tasks. Separate chat, coding, research, document and image work, and note which specific models or tools each task requires.
  2. Match the plan to the workload. Compare the $100 pair or $200 pair as a price benchmark, then include Pro 500 only if you need to consider OpenAI’s higher listed tier and Ultrafast.
  3. Watch your actual usage. Use each account’s current usage information to identify the model, product or session that runs short. Do not translate Anthropic’s multiplier into a message quota or assume OpenAI access is unlimited.
  4. Compare interruption costs. Consider how a rolling five-hour and weekly shared Claude pool affects switching between Claude surfaces, versus OpenAI’s separate Chat, Work and Codex allowance arrangements.
  5. Recheck current terms before subscribing. Plan prices, limits, eligible features and availability can change; rely on the vendors’ current plan pages and the usage display for your account.

Verdict: choose the workflow, not the multiplier

For a heavy user, ChatGPT Pro is the stronger fit when its models and included tools match the work and the relevant OpenAI allowances are sufficient. Claude Max is the stronger fit when Claude is the preferred model workflow and its shared pool, higher output limits and priority access suit the way you work. At $100 and $200, the listed prices line up neatly, but the quota systems do not. Official plan information establishes the feature and limit structures, not a universal quality winner; the best choice depends on the tasks you run and the usage your account records.
