Some system apps cannot be deleted, and whether they can be disabled depends on the phone, Android version, and app. ADB offers more package-level controls, but it is an advanced option—not a universal safe-removal list.
First identify what kind of app you want to remove
An app you installed yourself and an app that came with the phone may have different removal controls. Try the standard uninstall route for user-installed apps. For a preinstalled app, look in its App info screen or Settings for a Disable option. If neither uninstall nor disable is offered, the phone may protect that system app.

Google Android Help puts the limitation plainly: “You can’t delete some system apps that came pre-installed on your Android phone.” Google directs users to their device manufacturer for instructions on built-in apps, so menu labels and available controls vary by model and Android version. Google’s instructions for disabling preinstalled apps explain the general limitation.

Uninstall an app you installed
Google’s Play Store route is useful when the app is listed as an ordinary installed app:

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then choose Manage apps & devices and Manage.
- Select the app and tap Uninstall.
Google notes that some steps work only on newer Android versions. If the app does not offer Uninstall, check App info or ask the phone manufacturer whether the app is a protected system component. See Google’s instructions for deleting apps on Android.
Disable a preinstalled app in Settings
Open the app’s App info page—often available by pressing and holding its icon—or find the app list in Settings. If the phone offers Disable, review the app name and choose that control. The precise Settings path and wording differ across manufacturers, so use your manufacturer’s model-specific guidance if the option is hard to find.

Disabling is not the same as deleting: it turns off an app rather than removing it through the standard uninstall route. Google says some preinstalled apps cannot be deleted; on some phones, turning one off also hides it from the app list. Do not assume every built-in app can be disabled or that every phone handles re-enabling identically.

Android Debug Bridge (ADB) includes package-manager commands for uninstalling and disabling apps. Android Developers documents commands including adb shell pm uninstall PACKAGE, as well as disable and disable-user operations. The uninstall command can include --user to target a user. ADB can also list package categories, such as system packages (-s) and third-party packages (-3); those filters describe categories, not whether a particular package is safe to remove.

Before running a command
- Confirm the exact package name rather than relying on an app’s display name.
- Check the implications for your specific phone and Android version. Package controls are not a universal safety guarantee.
- Record the package name and preserve a way to re-enable or restore it before changing anything.
- Keep in mind that the official command reference documents package-manager controls, but does not establish one recovery procedure that works identically on every handset.
Because a mistaken package choice can affect functions you rely on, prefer uninstall or disable in the phone’s normal interface whenever that is enough. Consult Android Developers’ ADB reference for command syntax; do not treat a package-list filter as a removal recommendation.
Consider archiving if you mainly want to free app storage
Where supported, archiving removes an app’s software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications while keeping its icon and data. It is a different choice from uninstalling or disabling: you retain the app’s data and an entry point for restoring it. Feature availability depends on Android version and supported device hardware, and restoration depends on the app remaining available in the relevant store. Do not mistake unused-app management for removal
Android’s unused-app management can clear temporary files, revoke permissions, restrict background activity, and stop notifications. Those measures manage an app that is not being used; they do not mean it has been uninstalled. Google describes these controls in Manage unused apps on your Android device.
Restore an app if you change your mind
Google says deleted or disabled apps can be added back. For an app removed through Play Store, look for it in the store and reinstall it if it is available. For an app disabled in Settings, use the phone’s app controls to enable it again. ADB’s package-manager reference includes enable and disable operations, but exact restoration behavior for system components depends on the handset; follow manufacturer guidance if a built-in app or feature does not return as expected.
