Google Gemini Agent Alternatives for Workplace Automation

The right workplace-agent alternative depends on whether work is centered in Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Salesforce, IT service management, or a custom development stack.

The best alternative depends on which “Gemini” product you mean and where your employees’ work already happens. For workflows contained in Google Workspace, start with Google Workspace Studio; for a Microsoft 365 workplace, assess Microsoft’s Copilot agent options; for Salesforce CRM or IT service workflows, consider the platforms built around those systems. Teams building custom agents should compare developer platforms against the specific controls and orchestration they need—not just the vendor’s model list.

First, identify which Google product you are comparing

“Gemini agents” can refer to three related but different layers. Comparing an alternative to the wrong layer can lead to a poor fit: an employee-facing agent environment is not the same thing as a workflow builder or a developer platform.

Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform: build and operate agents

Google Cloud describes Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform as a platform for building, deploying, governing, and optimizing agents and model-based solutions. Google presents it as the evolution of Vertex AI. Its low-code route is Agent Studio; its code-based route includes the Agent Development Kit. The platform documentation also describes agent identity, a gateway, and Model Armor-related security and governance features.

Google says the platform provides access to more than 200 foundation models. That count describes model availability, not comparative quality, accuracy, or workplace productivity.

Gemini Enterprise app: a place for employees to use agents

The Gemini Enterprise app is the employee-facing environment for discovering, creating, sharing, and running agents. Google describes no-code agent creation and a centralized Inbox for managing agents. It is a closer comparison when the question is how employees access and coordinate agents, rather than how developers build their underlying systems.

Google Workspace Studio: automate work inside Workspace

Workspace Studio is the more focused option when a workflow mainly involves Google Workspace. Google describes it as a place to design, manage, and share workflows and AI agents, with examples such as saving Gmail attachments to Drive and recording them in Sheets. Google says Studio is generally available with Business and Enterprise Workspace plans. Check the current plan and tenant details before deployment.

Google says Studio respects user access permissions and existing Workspace data loss prevention controls. Its official page says broader DLP integration for third-party services was not part of its immediate plans, so assess the controls for any connected apps separately.

Which alternatives fit each workplace?

There is no single documented winner across these products. The practical shortlist depends on where the workflow, records, and users already live, and on whether the job calls for a ready-to-use agent, a visual builder, or developer control.

Microsoft-centered work: Microsoft 365 Copilot agents, Copilot Studio, or Microsoft Foundry

For organizations centered on Microsoft 365, Microsoft’s guidance identifies Microsoft 365 Copilot agents—including App Builder, Workflows, and Researcher—for automation and information synthesis over Microsoft 365 data. If those packaged capabilities do not meet the requirement, Microsoft presents Copilot Studio as a low-code SaaS platform and Microsoft Foundry as a managed platform path, alongside infrastructure-level choices.

This is the logical route to evaluate when employee work and relevant data are already in Microsoft 365. Microsoft’s own decision guidance recommends starting with functional needs, then choosing between SaaS agents and custom builds according to customization, technical capability, timeline, and control requirements.

Salesforce-centered workflows: Agentforce

Salesforce Agentforce is a candidate when CRM records, Salesforce processes, and organizational data are central to the task. Salesforce Help describes Agentforce Studio as a place to build, test, and monitor agents, and documents model options and ways to ground agents in internal data and other knowledge sources.

That makes it relevant to CRM-centered automation; it does not establish it as a general replacement for every workplace agent or automation platform. Assess how a proposed workflow reaches systems and information beyond Salesforce.

IT and service-management work: ServiceNow AI Platform

ServiceNow’s AI Platform and agents merit consideration for IT operations and service-management processes. A ServiceNow announcement in 2026 described agent collaboration using A2A and MCP, plus a shared governed registry with Google Cloud, with IT operations among the examples.

Availability was mixed in that announcement: the ServiceNow AI Control Tower and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform integration was described as live; certain autonomous operations solutions were in preview, with full availability targeted later in 2026; and a retail predictive-maintenance solution was piloting. Treat those as distinct statuses, not as a claim that every announced capability was generally available. Confirm current availability for your region, plan, and tenant.

Custom agents: compare developer platforms by required control

If the workflow needs custom tools, code-based orchestration, or runtime control, compare developer platforms rather than judging only the employee-facing apps. Google’s Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry are documented paths for this kind of work. The right choice depends on your developers’ skills, the systems the agent must access, and the level of governance and operational control you need. The available product descriptions do not establish that one platform is better across all custom-agent workloads.

Compare platforms against the work you need to automate

Use the following questions to narrow the shortlist before building a pilot or making a platform decision.

Decision area What to establish
Existing ecosystem Where do employees, identity, business records, documents, and workflow systems already live? A native fit may reduce integration work, but verify connector coverage and access boundaries.
Product layer Do employees need a place to run agents, a workflow builder for a specific app suite, a low-code agent builder, a developer platform, or an operations system tied to service workflows?
Build effort Will business users configure a visual workflow, or do developers need code-based orchestration, custom tools, and runtime control?
Workflow depth Is the task a simple trigger-and-action flow, a multi-step task involving reasoning, or a long-running process with handoffs and approvals? Confirm the exact product and plan support the required pattern.
Governance Review agent identity, least-privilege access to data, policy enforcement, observability, audit records, and governance of third-party connectors.
Maturity and availability Separate generally available features from previews, pilots, and roadmap targets. Verify geography, plan, and tenant eligibility directly with the vendor.

Validate the workflow and its controls before rollout

Product documentation and announcements describe vendor-stated capabilities; they do not demonstrate that an agent will perform well on your organization’s tasks. The reviewed sources do not provide a neutral, comparable benchmark of accuracy, productivity, adoption, or total cost across these platforms.

  1. Choose one bounded workflow. Define the trigger, systems involved, expected result, exceptions, and where a person must approve or take over.
  2. Trace every data path. Identify which records, messages, files, and connected services the agent can read or change, then check that permissions match the task.
  3. Test failures as well as successful runs. Check how the workflow handles missing information, ambiguous requests, inaccessible records, duplicate triggers, and actions that should require approval.
  4. Inspect operating controls. Confirm what administrators can observe, what is recorded for audit, how policies are enforced, and how an agent or connector can be disabled.
  5. Verify release status and eligibility. Confirm the feature is available in the intended region and plan, and distinguish a live capability from a preview, pilot, or future target.

Make the shortlist by ecosystem, not headline claims

Begin with the product layer and the systems the workflow actually uses. Compare Workspace Studio for Workspace-contained automation, Microsoft’s agent paths for Microsoft 365-centered work, Agentforce for Salesforce-centered CRM processes, and ServiceNow for service-management and IT operations. For custom builds, evaluate developer platforms against your requirements for integration, orchestration, governance, and operational control.

Vendor-reported platform scale or feature counts are not head-to-head evidence of agent quality. Choose through a bounded workflow evaluation, with access controls and release availability checked for the exact deployment you intend to make.
