Start with Google Play Protect, then check Android updates and review apps you do not trust. These steps can find known harmful apps and help diagnose suspicious behavior, but a clean scan cannot guarantee that every app installed by the phone’s manufacturer is safe. If an unfamiliar built-in app cannot be removed or problems persist, contact the phone’s manufacturer or seller.
1. Scan the phone with Google Play Protect

Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then tap Play Protect.

Review the scan result and confirm that app scanning is enabled. Keep Play Protect on. If you install apps from outside Google Play, enable improved harmful-app detection in Play Protect’s settings.

If you want an immediate check, start a scan from the Play Protect screen. Google says Play Protect checks apps and devices for harmful behavior, including apps from sources other than Google Play. It may warn you about a harmful app, disable it, or remove it. Google also describes a lightweight daily scan.

A result saying Play Protect found no harmful apps means the scan did not detect one; it is not a guarantee that every preinstalled app is safe. See Google’s explanation of Play Protect and its Android security FAQs.
2. Install available Android and security updates
In Settings, check for Android updates, security updates, and Google Play system updates. The names and locations of these options vary by phone and Android version, so use Settings search or the manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find them. Updates can address known security issues, but installing them does not verify that a particular bundled app is trustworthy. Google includes update checks in its Android guidance for removing malware or unsafe software.

3. Review unfamiliar apps and their permissions
Open the phone’s app list in Settings and look for apps you do not recognize or do not trust. Consider whether each app is needed and whether its permissions make sense for what it does. Remove apps you do not trust when Android offers an uninstall option.

Do not remove or disable a core component just because its name is unfamiliar. Some system and manufacturer apps cannot be uninstalled, and disabling essential components can disrupt phone functions.

For a suspicious built-in app you cannot remove, contact the manufacturer or seller. Give them the app’s name and describe what concerned you.

Check whether an app’s access fits its purpose. Android’s developer guidance says device makers should scan preinstalled apps for potentially harmful applications and limit their permissions to what they need. That guidance makes preinstalled apps part of the security review; it does not mean a particular bundled app is malicious. See the Android app security best practices.

4. Treat symptoms as clues, not proof
Google lists persistent pop-up ads, unexpected virus messages, unusual slowness, unexplained storage loss, device malfunctions, browser redirects or changed settings, security software that stops working, and messages sent from your accounts as possible signs of malware. None of these symptoms alone establishes that an app is malicious; ordinary software faults or browser notifications can look similar.

A web page claiming that your phone is infected is not the same as a Play Protect warning. If you notice messages or other activity you did not initiate, review your Google Account security as well as the phone’s apps.
5. Use safe mode to investigate downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If a problem disappears in safe mode, Google says a downloaded app is likely causing it. Remove recent downloads one at a time, restarting normally and checking whether the problem returns. Safe mode is a diagnostic for app-related trouble, not a scan that certifies factory-installed apps.
The steps for entering and leaving safe mode vary by phone. Follow the instructions from your manufacturer, or Google’s guide to finding problem apps with safe mode.
6. Check Play Protect certification separately
Certification is not a malware-scan result. A Play Protect certified device has passed Google’s compatibility testing and is eligible to include licensed Google apps; this does not prove that every app on it is safe. Google warns that uncertified devices may not receive Android or app updates and may not be secure. Check certification status in the Play Store’s settings and consult the manufacturer if the phone is not certified. Follow Google’s instructions to check and fix Play Protect certification status.
7. Escalate if the problem persists
If suspicious signs remain after checking apps and updates, contact the phone’s manufacturer for help. A factory reset may be necessary. Before resetting, back up essential data and follow the manufacturer’s device-specific instructions; a reset erases data stored on the phone. Google also recommends considering a reset or manufacturer support when signs of malware remain.
