Touch and hold the alert, tap Settings (or the gear), then turn off or silence the category named Background tasks, Background activity, Other, or a similar label. Keep Incoming messages, SMS, MMS, and RCS categories enabled.
If messages are delayed, stuck, blank, or the app is unresponsive, treat the alert as a possible symptom and troubleshoot Messages rather than merely hiding it.

What the notification means
Android is telling you that Google Messages is processing something while it is not the app on screen. That work can include receiving or processing an SMS or MMS, downloading an attachment, handling an RCS chat, synchronizing conversation data, restoring message state, or completing an operation started before you left Messages.
Google has not publicly documented one universal internal trigger for this exact wording. A more specific alert, such as “processing an incoming MMS message,” gives stronger evidence about the task. Google’s Messages community describes the general alert as informational: Google Messages community discussion.

The notification itself is not proof that someone is spying, secretly using your phone, or accessing another conversation. It can appear when Messages is legitimately handling a new message without you opening the app. It deserves troubleshooting when it stays persistent alongside failed or delayed messages, conversations that will not load, repeated MMS downloads, unusual battery drain, or an app that freezes. User reports have connected the alert with MMS processing failures (example report) and an unusable Messages app (example report).
Remove the prompt without turning off text alerts
Use the notification itself
- Wait for the alert, or open Notification history if your phone provides it.
- Touch and hold the “Messages is doing work in the background” notification.
- Tap Settings or the gear icon.
- Turn off only the category associated with background work, or set it to Silent.
- Leave categories for incoming SMS, MMS, RCS, and other message alerts enabled.
Android supports app-level and category-level notification controls, although names and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version. See Google’s notification guidance. Notification channels are independently controllable on Android 8.0 and later where the app and device expose them (Android notification documentation).
Use Android Settings
The usual route is Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Messages. Select the background-work category and disable it or make it silent. Do not switch off the master Allow notifications control unless you intentionally want to suppress every Messages alert.
Pixel and near-stock Android
On Pixel-style software, open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Messages, then review the categories. If the alert has disappeared, search Settings for Notification history and open the recorded notification to reach its settings when supported.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings.
- Enable Manage notification categories for each app.
- Go to Notifications → App notifications → Messages → Notification categories.
- Disable or silence the category for background work, if it is listed.
Samsung may hide per-category controls until that setting is enabled. The available categories depend on your Galaxy model and One UI version; Samsung documents the general controls at Samsung support.

If there is no background-work category
Some phones expose only a master notification switch. A category may not appear until Messages has generated the alert, or it may be shown under Recently sent or Notification history. Search Settings for “notification history,” reproduce the alert, and open its settings from there if possible.
If your phone offers only a general Messages switch, turning it off will also hide incoming-text notifications, so it is not the preferred fix. You can instead set the broadest available status category to silent, but verify that ordinary message alerts still arrive.

Google’s public help does not establish that it controls this exact prompt, so do not treat it as a guaranteed solution (Messages notification settings).
Do not confuse notification suppression with stopping background work
Disabling a notification category hides the status message; it does not tell Messages to stop processing. Restricting background usage or battery activity is a different action and can interfere with timely SMS/MMS handling, RCS operation, companion-device features, or message downloads. Google also notes that message-related access can support watches, cars, home devices, and other companions (Google Messages permissions and companion features). Do not revoke permissions or restrict background activity merely to remove the prompt.

1. Confirm the symptom
Open Messages and send or receive a test conversation. If it opens normally and messages work, use the notification-category fix instead of resetting the app.

2. Restart the phone
A restart can clear a temporary process that has stopped responding. Google includes restarting early in its installed-app troubleshooting guidance (Pixel app troubleshooting).
3. Force stop Messages
On Pixel-style Android, use Settings → Apps → See all apps → Messages → Force stop → OK, then reopen Messages. Force stopping does not delete conversations; it interrupts the current app process and may temporarily interrupt message processing.
4. Update Messages and Android
- In the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Manage apps & device → Updates available.
- Open Settings → System → Software update and install available system updates.
Updating is especially sensible when the behavior began after an app or system change. The same Google troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping both the app and Android current.
5. Clear the cache
Use Settings → Apps → Messages → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Cache clearing removes temporary data. It is not the same as clearing storage, which permanently deletes app data according to Google’s storage guidance.

6. Check network and storage prerequisites
- Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data, particularly for MMS and RCS.
- Check that the phone has usable free storage.
- Retry the affected conversation and confirm automatic date and time are enabled if registration or connectivity looks abnormal.
These checks do not prove that low storage or connectivity caused the alert, but they are common prerequisites for message and app operations.
MMS and RCS cases need separate attention
MMS
MMS problems often involve picture messages, group texts, or an alert that repeatedly says it is processing an incoming MMS. Check mobile data and carrier MMS support before assuming the notification channel is the fault. A message that cannot download can keep background processing active.
RCS
RCS-related symptoms include chats stuck on sending, late delivery, failed chat-feature registration, or broken group conversations. Availability and behavior vary by region and carrier (Google’s RCS information). Do not turn off RCS as an automatic first step: it changes chat behavior and may not fix an app-processing problem.
Use Notification history to identify a pattern
Where available, Notification history can show whether the alert follows every incoming message, appears with a more specific MMS/RCS notice, remains silent, or continues when Messages has not been opened. A recurring silent alert with no delivery problem points toward a notification-channel nuisance; recurrence plus delays, battery drain, or an unresponsive app points toward troubleshooting.

Advanced recovery: clear storage or roll back updates
These are not routine fixes.
- Clear storage/data: this is different from clearing cache and can permanently delete Messages app data, settings, and local state. Verify how your device backs up SMS/MMS/RCS data and be prepared to reconfigure the app before using it.
- Uninstall updates: this can revert Messages to an older factory build, create compatibility or security concerns, reset settings, sign you out, or require RCS re-registration. Check for a newer update first and use rollback only when you understand the consequences.
If the app remains broken after the safe steps, contact your carrier for MMS/RCS and network issues or Google/device support for an app defect. Avoid random permission revocations or battery restrictions because they can break companion-device and timely-delivery features.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will disabling the background-work notification stop messages from arriving?
No, provided you disable or silence only that notification category and leave incoming SMS, MMS, and RCS categories enabled. Turning off the master Messages notification switch is different and can hide ordinary message alerts.
Why does the prompt appear after every message?
Messages may be generating the same informational status notification for routine background processing. Check Notification history; if delivery is normal, suppress the category. If messages are delayed or stuck, investigate MMS, RCS, connectivity, and the app itself.
Should I disable Messages background activity?
No. Notification suppression hides the prompt, while background restrictions can interfere with timely delivery, MMS downloads, RCS, and companion devices.

Is this notification evidence that someone is using my phone?
No. The alert alone is an Android app-status notification, not proof of spying or unauthorized access. It becomes a technical concern when paired with delivery failures, battery drain, or an unresponsive app.
