It is a runway-launched, autonomous fixed-wing aircraft designed to carry rockets, heavy cargo and flight-test equipment. Aevum currently describes it as a 27-ton aircraft, while its 2020 unveiling coverage reported a length of about 80 feet, a 60-foot wingspan and a weight of 55,000 pounds.
That superlative needs a qualifier: Ravn X is a leading candidate for the largest publicly disclosed autonomous unmanned aircraft by stated mass, but it is not the largest aircraft overall, nor does the public record establish routine orbital operations.

What is Aevum’s Ravn X?
Ravn X is not a quadcopter or an enlarged consumer drone. It is a large fixed-wing aircraft intended to take off and land from a runway without an onboard pilot. In aerospace terminology, “autonomous unmanned aircraft” or “UAS” is more precise than the informal word “drone.”

The original dimensions and weight came from coverage of the December 2020 unveiling by Futurism. Aevum’s present website uses the rounded “27-ton” description and does not reproduce every original dimension. The numbers therefore should not be treated as a single current, independently certified specification sheet.
Why build a drone that carries rockets?
Ravn X’s central idea is air launch. The aircraft would take a rocket into the atmosphere, release it at altitude, and allow the rocket to continue toward orbit. The 2020 report said the aircraft was intended to take off and land like an airplane, release a small rocket and use a runway at least one mile long.

An aircraft-based launch system could offer:
- More flexible launch locations than a fixed vertical pad.
- A reusable aircraft component instead of discarding the entire launch vehicle.
- Potentially easier relocation of launch operations.
- A platform that can also move cargo or support flight tests.
Air launch is not a shortcut to orbit. The rocket still supplies almost all of the velocity required for orbit, while the aircraft adds its own engineering and regulatory challenges: carrying and releasing a large rocket, coordinating flight controls, managing weather and airspace, meeting range-safety rules and maintaining a very large autonomous aircraft.
Aevum associates Ravn X with two launch vehicles. It describes ERV-A as an expendable rapid-response vehicle with a stated payload of up to 600 kg to low Earth orbit and a nominal 180-minute call-up. RRV-A is described as reusable, but its payload is listed as confidential. These are company plans and specifications, not evidence that the complete architecture is in routine commercial service.
How autonomous is it?
Aevum uses terms including “fully autonomous” and “edge AI” for Ravn X. Its website lists a sensor suite comprising one LiDAR unit, four mid-field-of-view cameras, two wide side cameras, a radar altimeter, two millimeter-wave radar units described as experimental, 11 ultrasonic sensors and 21 combined operational-autonomy sensors. The company says the system provides approximately 300 degrees of azimuth coverage.

Those are manufacturer-provided system descriptions, not independent validation of unattended operation. In aviation, autonomous flight can mean that onboard systems execute a route while people still authorize, monitor and manage the mission. Communications links, ground control, emergency procedures, air-traffic coordination and regulatory approvals remain important.
NASA describes the RQ-4 Global Hawk in similar terms: it can execute a preloaded flight plan autonomously but is managed and monitored through communications systems and a ground control station. “Autonomous” therefore should not be read as “legally free to operate anywhere without human oversight.”
Ravn X versus the Global Hawk
The RQ-4 Global Hawk is a useful comparison because it is a genuine large unmanned aircraft with extensive military and research experience.

NASA lists the Global Hawk at approximately 65,000 feet maximum altitude, more than 11,000 nautical miles of range and over 31 hours of endurance for the cited specification. NASA also describes missions lasting about 24 hours. The comparison shows why “biggest” is ambiguous: Ravn X is heavier, while Global Hawk has nearly twice the wingspan and a much more extensively documented operational history.
A 2014 RAND report called Global Hawk the largest, most complex and most expensive UAS then in production. That was a statement about the report’s publication context, not a universal 2026 record under every measurement.
Why Ravn X is not the world’s biggest aircraft
Stratolaunch’s Roc is dramatically larger. The company lists a 385-foot wingspan, a 1.3-million-pound takeoff weight and six engines, and calls Roc the world’s largest operating aircraft. Its current missions include air-launch and hypersonic testing; see Stratolaunch’s vehicle page.

Roc does not automatically disprove the Ravn X headline because the categories differ. “Largest operating aircraft” is broader than “largest autonomous unmanned aircraft,” and the available Roc material does not make it equivalent to Ravn X’s explicitly autonomous, uncrewed design. Roc should not be labeled a drone here without a source establishing that classification for the configuration being discussed.
What has actually been demonstrated?
Aevum unveiled Ravn X in 2020 and continues to promote the aircraft and its launch vehicles on its 2026 website. The public material reviewed for this article establishes an announced aircraft design, current company specifications and intended launch, cargo and testing roles.
It does not establish a completed orbital launch from Ravn X, routine commercial service or broad operational deployment. An unveiling, prototype, test flight, rocket-release test, successful orbital launch and commercial operation are separate milestones. The available evidence should not be used to claim that Ravn X has already delivered satellites to orbit or is certified for unrestricted autonomous cargo operations.
So, is it the world’s biggest drone?
The most defensible answer is conditional:
- By stated mass: Ravn X is a leading candidate among publicly described autonomous unmanned aircraft and may be the largest in that category.
- By wingspan: No. Stratolaunch Roc is vastly wider.
- By overall operating-aircraft size: No. Roc holds that company-stated distinction.
- By military UAS history: Global Hawk remains the more established operational comparison and has a much larger wingspan.
- By proven orbital service: The reviewed public evidence does not establish routine Ravn X launches.
Ravn X is best described as one of the largest publicly disclosed autonomous unmanned aircraft, and likely the largest by its stated mass among the candidates examined. The headline is useful only when that measurement—and the difference between an announced capability and demonstrated service—is made explicit.
