To remove someone else’s Face ID from an iPhone or iPad you own or are authorized to manage, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enter the device passcode if asked, then tap Reset Face ID. This clears the Face ID enrollment, including any alternate appearance; it does not let you delete only one face and keep another enrolled. Set up Face ID again afterward if you want to use it.
Remove the Face ID enrollment from a device you can access
- On the iPhone or iPad whose enrollment needs changing, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
- Enter the device passcode if prompted.
- Tap Reset Face ID.
- If you want to keep using Face ID, tap Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen instructions.
Apple’s guidance specifically recommends resetting Face ID if you believe someone added an alternate appearance without your permission. The normal settings process requires the device passcode, so you need authorized access to the device and its passcode. See Apple’s Face ID safety guidance and Face ID setup instructions.

What Reset Face ID removes
Reset Face ID clears the enrollment as a whole. It removes the current Face ID data and any alternate appearance, rather than offering a control to remove one stored face while retaining another. If you still want biometric unlocking, enroll your own face again after the reset.

If Stolen Device Protection interrupts the change
Stolen Device Protection can add safeguards to sensitive changes. Depending on its settings and location context, an action may require Face ID or Touch ID with no passcode fallback, or a one-hour security delay followed by another biometric check. Apple lists adding or removing Face ID or Touch ID among changes that can require a delay when the protection setting is set to Always. Follow the prompt on the device; do not treat the delay as a reason to erase the phone. Details are in Apple’s Stolen Device Protection guide.

If the iPhone is lost or stolen
You cannot use these local Settings steps remotely or to change a phone you do not control. Use Apple’s lost-device guidance to mark the iPhone as lost through Find My or iCloud.com and protect your account. Stolen Device Protection is intended to make critical device and Apple Account changes harder for someone who knows the passcode, while giving the owner time to mark the device as lost.
Why a factory reset is usually unnecessary
A factory reset erases all content and settings, including Face ID data; it is not the normal way to remove an unwanted enrollment. Use Reset Face ID for that task. Consider erasing all content and settings only when you have a broader reason to wipe the device, and understand that doing so removes data beyond Face ID.
