The Topo Aura 2 is best suited to runners who want a roomy, rounded forefoot, a more secure-feeling heel and midfoot, and moderate guidance for easy miles. It is also a plausible choice for walking or long days on your feet. Its 5 mm drop and relatively firm, heavy ride make it less compelling for speed work or racing.
What kind of running shoe is the Topo Aura 2?
Topo classifies the Aura 2 as a max-cushioned stability road shoe for daily running and walking. The brand lists a 38 mm heel stack, 33 mm forefoot stack, 5 mm drop, and weight of 10.6 oz in a men’s size 9. Its construction includes a Y-Frame Guidance System, ZipFoam midsole, OrthoLite insole, breathable mesh upper, and high-abrasion rubber outsole. Those are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not independent performance findings. Topo Athletic’s U.S. Aura 2 listing also offers wide sizes.

Weight and measurements differ slightly by source and method. Doctors of Running lists 301 g for a men’s size 9 and 255 g for a women’s size 8. RTINGS reports its own measurements—303.6 g, a 38.4 mm heel stack, and a 5.6 mm drop—using its stated Methodology v0.16. These figures are not interchangeable universal measurements. Doctors of Running’s 2026 review and RTINGS’ review identify their respective figures and contexts.

Matthew Klein of Doctors of Running describes version two as a measured update: a slightly softer, bouncier midsole, a better forefoot rocker, and upper changes intended to improve lockdown. He still characterizes the shoe as relatively firm, substantial in weight, and more appropriate for relaxed running than for speed. In his review, he reports running 40 miles in his pair and using it for months of walking; that is his experience, not a broader durability test.

RTINGS also views it as a stable option for relaxed mileage, walking, and extended time on one’s feet. Its testing framework gives the shoe low energy-return and bounciness scores, and it considers the weight and limited rebound poor fits for short-distance racing. Those are RTINGS-specific evaluations, not universal ratings.
Best for
- Recovery runs and relaxed easy miles.
- Runners who prefer a 5 mm drop and moderate guidance rather than a highly propulsive ride.
- Walking and standing, where the roomy forefoot and stable platform may be welcome.
Less suited to
- Short-distance racing or fast workouts where low weight and strong rebound matter.
- Runners seeking a notably soft, lively, or highly rockered daily trainer.
Is the Topo Aura 2 a stability shoe?
Yes. Topo identifies the Aura 2 as a stability shoe and names its guidance system Y-Frame. Doctors of Running describes the support as moderate, citing the medial post, wider platform, and sidewalls as features contributing to guidance. That describes the shoe’s construction and intended feel; it does not establish that it will correct an individual gait pattern or prevent injury.

Does the Topo Aura 2 run true to size?
Available fit reports are reviewer-specific rather than a guarantee for every foot. Klein says he wore his usual men’s U.S. size 10. He describes a wide, rounded toe box without taper, a more conventional midfoot width, and a secure heel; he also reports more lateral forefoot room than in version one. He found the tongue needed adjustment when putting the shoe on. A second Doctors of Running reviewer says a lace lock was needed and suggests narrow-footed runners try it in store.

The defining fit idea is room for the toes with a more held midfoot and heel—not an equally wide fit everywhere. Topo lists wide sizing on its U.S. page. Check the current size chart and, if possible, try the shoe on; a roomy toe box alone does not determine whether the heel and midfoot will fit securely.

What changed in the Topo Aura 2?
Doctors of Running’s review describes the update as evolutionary rather than a redesign. The midsole is slightly softer and bouncier, the forefoot rocker is improved, and the upper has changes aimed at better lockdown. The shoe retains the original’s general identity, while the reviewer found it more usable for running without becoming a speed shoe. Read the full review for the reviewer’s detailed account.
How does it compare with the Hoka Gaviota 6 and Altra Paradigm 8?
Doctors of Running uses the Gaviota 6 and Paradigm 8 as useful points of comparison, not as a universal ranking. In Klein’s assessment, the Aura 2 sits between them in ride: less rockered than the Gaviota and more comfortable than the Paradigm. The Paradigm is zero-drop and firmer, while the Gaviota has a more distinctly rolling, rockered sensation. The review notes that all three have accommodating uppers and wide options. RTINGS also publishes a direct Aura 2 and Paradigm 8 comparison.
