Check for files saved outside the chat and remember that deleting a record from your account does not necessarily erase copies already made by other people. The exact controls depend on the service and whether you use a personal or managed work or school account.
Before you delete anything
- Identify the service and account. Check whether you are signed in to ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, and whether your account is personal or managed by an employer or school. An administrator may control some settings on managed accounts.
- Remove the conversation or activity. Use the service’s history or activity controls; archiving is not deletion.
- Revoke shared links separately. Visit the service’s shared-link controls and remove any link that exposed the conversation. A history deletion may leave a link active.
- Check for related material. Look for separately stored files, generated artifacts, recipient copies, or copies posted elsewhere.
Settings and labels can vary by account, plan, app, and workspace policy. If a control below is missing, consult the provider’s current help page or ask your organization’s administrator.

ChatGPT: delete the chat, then check shared links and files
Delete a conversation
- Open your chat history and open the conversation’s more-options menu.
- Select Delete and confirm.
OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. Exceptions apply if it has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account, or if OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal obligations. Deleted chats cannot be restored. See the OpenAI Help Center’s chat-retention guidance.

Go to Settings → Data controls → Shared links, find the affected link, and remove or revoke it. Control availability can vary by account, plan, and workspace. Deleting or archiving the underlying conversation should not be treated as a substitute for checking the link list. OpenAI explains the controls in its shared-links FAQ.

Delete Library files separately
If you added files that were saved in ChatGPT Library, review Library and delete the sensitive files there too. OpenAI says Library files are stored separately from chats, so deleting a conversation alone does not remove them. Details are in the ChatGPT file-uploads FAQ.
Archive and training controls are different
Archiving only removes a conversation from the regular sidebar; it remains subject to the same retention rules as other saved chats. Turning off Improve the model for everyone is also not a deletion step: OpenAI says, “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models. They can still appear in your chat history.” See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.

Claude: remove the conversation and turn off sharing
Delete the conversation
Use Claude’s conversation list to find the chat and delete it through its conversation controls. Anthropic’s help page on deleting or renaming conversations describes the available controls. Do not assume that deleting the conversation also disables a public link.
Disable the shared link
Turn off sharing from the chat’s Share menu, or go to Settings → Privacy → Shared chats and disable the relevant share. Anthropic says Free, Pro, and Max users can review shared chats in that settings area, and that turning sharing off disables the link on claude.ai. Follow its sharing and unsharing guidance.

Gemini: check both activity and public links
Delete a conversation or activity
For a personal account, review Gemini Apps activity in the app’s Activity controls or in Google My Activity. Gemini’s recent-chat deletion controls can remove a conversation and related activity and content created in it, such as Canvas documents and apps. Google says this recent-chat feature for personal accounts requires Keep Activity to be on. Work and school activity settings may be controlled by an administrator. See Google’s Gemini Apps activity guidance and recent-chat deletion instructions.
Turning Keep Activity off stops activity from appearing in that activity history, but it does not promise instant removal: Google says conversations may remain associated with a personal account for up to 72 hours for service operation and feedback processing. Activity and model-improvement controls are distinct, and the setting can have other product effects; check Google’s current guidance before changing it.

Delete public links separately
Open Gemini’s Your public links area and delete the specific link, or delete all public links. Google says someone opening a deleted link will see that the chat no longer exists and be redirected to Gemini. But removing the link does not remove posts containing it on third-party sites or a copy in another person’s Gemini activity if they continued the conversation. Conversely, deleting a shared chat from activity does not delete its associated public link. Check both controls using Google’s Gemini chat-sharing instructions.

A Gemini public link can be opened by anyone who has it and may be reshared; shared pages may also include generated artifacts. Google warns: “Also, do not enter confidential information in your conversations or any data you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our products, services, and machine-learning technologies.” Review the full chat, attachments, and artifacts before sharing.

These are provider-specific statements, not a universal promise that every record is erased immediately. A recipient may have copied, continued, or reposted shared content, and a separate file or artifact may have its own controls. Once you revoke a link, you can limit further access through that URL, but you cannot use the provider’s control to erase copies elsewhere.
Reduce the chance of another exposure
- Do not enter passwords, payment details, confidential customer or employer information, or other secrets into a chat unless your organization has approved that use.
- Before creating a public link, inspect the entire conversation and any attached files or generated artifacts—not just the message you intend to share.
- After sharing, keep track of where the link was posted and remove it from those locations if needed; revoking the original link does not delete third-party copies.
Microsoft Copilot steps are not included here because the specific combination of chat-history deletion and shared-link revocation is not established by the cited official guidance for this guide. Personal and work Copilot accounts may expose different controls; consult Microsoft’s current help for your account rather than applying another provider’s steps.
