How to Remove Rocket Plugins From an Unturned Server (Safely)

Stop the server, remove the correct Rocket plugin DLL or use Rocket’s remove command, preserve data if needed, then restart and verify. Learn when removing Modules/Rocket.Unturned is appropriate and why a deleted plugin may still load.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To remove one Rocket plugin, stop the Unturned server, delete that plugin’s DLL from Rocket/Plugins (or run rocket remove <plugin-name> when the plugin was installed through Rocket’s management tooling), then restart and check the startup output. Do not delete the entire Rocket module unless you intend to remove the framework and every Rocket plugin.

The key distinction is scope: a plugin DLL is one add-on, while Modules/Rocket.Unturned is the Rocket/LDM runtime. Removing the wrong one can disable features you did not mean to touch.

What you are removing: a plugin or the Rocket framework?

Unturned servers commonly have two separate Rocket-related targets:

Target Typical location Effect of removal Best method
One Rocket plugin Rocket/Plugins/<plugin>.dll Removes that plugin’s commands, features and event handlers. Other Rocket plugins remain. rocket remove <plugin-name> when supported, or delete the specific DLL while the server is stopped.
Rocket/LDM framework module Unturned/Modules/Rocket.Unturned (often shown as Modules/Rocket.Unturned from the server root) Removes Rocket’s runtime and consequently affects every Rocket plugin. Back up first, stop the server, then remove the complete Rocket module folder only if that is your goal.

A plugin’s configuration and data are separate from its DLL. A same-named folder under Rocket’s configuration or data directories can survive after the DLL is removed. Keeping that data allows a later reinstall to reuse settings; deleting it resets the plugin and may be irreversible.

Before changing files

Stop the server process

Shut the server down cleanly from the game panel, service manager or console. Do not replace or delete plugin files while Unturned is running. The process can keep a DLL open, rewrite configuration on shutdown, or load the old file again before your change is complete.

Make a rollback copy

Copy the server’s configuration and data before removing anything. At minimum, preserve the target DLL and any same-named configuration directory in a dated backup outside the live server directory. If you are removing Rocket itself, back up the complete server configuration and data, not only the module folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the server root

File panels often expose several folders or several game instances. Verify the selected server and locate the directory that contains the live Rocket and, if installed, Modules folders. Deleting a DLL from an archive, staging instance or a different server does not change the instance players connect to.

Method 1: remove a plugin with Rocket’s management command

Use this method when the plugin was installed through Rocket’s management tooling and the server console accepts Rocket commands.

  1. Stop the server or use the provider’s maintenance control so no plugin files are being written.
  2. Open the server console associated with the correct Unturned instance.
  3. Run rocket remove <plugin-name>, replacing the placeholder with the plugin’s registered name rather than an arbitrary display label.
  4. Read the command response. A successful removal should identify the plugin or confirm that it was removed; an unknown-plugin response means you should not guess at the name.
  5. Inspect Rocket/Plugins after the command. If the DLL remains, treat the installation as manual and use the file-removal method below.
  6. Start the server and inspect its startup output for the plugin name and any load errors.

The command is a management action, not a guarantee that every generated data file has been erased. Check configuration and data directories separately if you want a complete reset.

Method 2: remove a manually installed plugin DLL

Locate the plugin directory

From the live server root, open Rocket/Plugins. On a hosted server this is usually reached through FTP/SFTP or the provider’s web file manager. The provider may add a server-specific prefix; one documented layout is ServersUnturnedServerByHHRocketPlugins. The prefix is provider-specific, so use the path belonging to your selected server rather than copying it blindly.

Identify the correct file

Match the plugin name to its .dll filename. If several files have similar names, use the plugin’s installation notes, the startup log or the file’s modification date. Do not remove every DLL in the folder as a shortcut: that would disable unrelated plugins.

Delete or move the DLL

  1. With the server stopped, download a backup copy of the target DLL.
  2. Delete the target .dll from Rocket/Plugins, or move it to a backup directory outside the live plugin folder.
  3. Do not leave a second copy with a .dll extension in Rocket/Plugins; Rocket may discover and load both files.
  4. Leave other plugin DLLs untouched.

Moving the file out of the live directory is easier to reverse, while deletion is appropriate when you are certain the plugin is no longer wanted. Either way, the file must be absent from the directory Rocket scans at startup.

What to do with configuration and generated data

Removing a DLL does not necessarily remove files the plugin created. Look for a configuration file or directory bearing the plugin’s name in the Rocket configuration or data locations used by your installation.

Keep data for a possible reinstall

Archive the configuration and data outside the active server tree if you may reinstall the plugin. Preserve the directory structure and note the date and plugin version. This retains settings such as permissions, messages or feature toggles without allowing the old DLL to load.

Delete data for a clean reset

Delete the plugin’s generated files only when you intentionally want a first-run configuration. This can remove customized settings and stored state, and the cited installation guidance does not promise recovery after deletion. A backup is the practical safeguard.

Avoid broad cleanup

Do not delete the entire Rocket configuration directory to remove one plugin. Shared settings and other plugins may use the same parent directory. Remove only files clearly associated with the target plugin.

Runtime unload is not permanent removal

Rocket supports runtime commands that change the current process without removing files:

  • /rocket unload <plugin> unloads a running plugin and removes that plugin’s registered commands.
  • /rocket reload <plugin> unloads the plugin and then loads it again.

These commands are useful for troubleshooting or temporarily disabling a feature without stopping the server. They do not delete the DLL, configuration or data. The plugin will be discovered again on the next restart unless its file is removed from Rocket/Plugins. For a permanent uninstall, stop the server and remove the file as described above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Removing Rocket/LDM itself

Remove the framework only when you want Rocket and all of its plugins gone. Unturned stores server modules under Unturned/Modules. Older Rocket installations commonly use a folder named Rocket.Unturned inside that location.

  2. Back up the complete configuration and data, including all Rocket plugin files and settings.
  3. From the server root, open Modules and verify that Rocket.Unturned is the module you intend to remove.
  4. Delete or move the complete Modules/Rocket.Unturned folder. Do not remove unrelated Unturned modules.
  5. Start the server and watch the startup output. Rocket should no longer initialize, and all Rocket plugins should consequently remain inactive.

Removing this folder is substantially broader than deleting one plugin DLL. Commands, permissions and features supplied by every Rocket plugin will be unavailable. If your actual goal is to stop one malfunctioning add-on, keep the module and remove only that add-on’s DLL.

Hosted-server paths and access methods

On a self-managed machine, use the operating system’s file system and service controls. On a hosted server, the same files are exposed through FTP/SFTP or a control-panel file manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Access method Typical action Common mistake
FTP/SFTP client Connect to the selected server, browse to Rocket/Plugins, download a backup, then delete or move the target DLL. Connecting to the host account’s default directory instead of the game instance’s server root.
Web file manager Open the server’s file manager, select the live instance, and use its Rocket/Plugins path. Using a similarly named backup or test server listed in the same panel.
Server console Run rocket remove <plugin-name> if the plugin was managed by Rocket. Assuming a console command removed files when the DLL and data still exist.

Provider prefixes differ, so there is no universal absolute path. The reliable anchors are the Rocket/Plugins directory for individual plugins and Modules/Rocket.Unturned for the Rocket framework.

Why the plugin still loads after you deleted it

The server was still running

If the process was not stopped, it may still have the assembly loaded in memory. Stop it, confirm the file is absent, and start it again. A runtime unload can help immediately, but it does not replace a clean restart for verification.

You edited the wrong server or directory

Check the control panel’s selected instance and compare the path with the directory that contains the active server logs. A DLL removed from another instance has no effect on the server players are joining.

A second copy remains

Search Rocket/Plugins for similarly named DLLs, including renamed backups that still end in .dll. Rocket can discover more than one assembly if duplicate copies are present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You removed data but not the DLL

Configuration folders do not control plugin discovery. Rocket loads plugin assemblies from the plugin directory, so remove the actual target DLL.

The plugin is bundled or loaded by another system

Some server packages include files outside the usual directory or use a different module loader. Review the startup output to see the exact assembly path and loader name. Remove only the file identified by that installation, and do not delete the Rocket framework unless you intend a framework-wide removal.

The startup message is a stale log entry

Confirm the timestamp of the current startup, then inspect only messages produced after that launch. An old log can make a successfully removed plugin appear to be loading.

The DLL is gone but an error remains

A dependent plugin or leftover configuration may still reference the removed add-on. Read the full error line, identify the named dependency, and disable or update that dependency separately. Do not restore the removed plugin solely to hide an unrelated error without determining which component requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verification checklist after removal

  • The server process was stopped before any file change.
  • A backup of the target DLL and relevant configuration exists, unless you deliberately accepted irreversible deletion.
  • The intended DLL is absent from the live Rocket/Plugins directory.
  • No duplicate copy with a .dll extension remains there.
  • Plugin configuration was archived or intentionally deleted; unrelated configuration was left untouched.
  • The server was restarted, not merely reloaded in memory.
  • Current startup output no longer lists the plugin as loaded and shows no new load error for it.
  • If Rocket itself was removed, Modules/Rocket.Unturned is absent and you have confirmed that all Rocket plugins are expected to stop working.

Choosing the safest removal method

Situation Recommended action Scope Reversibility
Temporarily disable a running plugin for diagnosis /rocket unload <plugin> One plugin in the current process High until restart; files remain
Reload after changing settings /rocket reload <plugin> One plugin in the current process High; no file deletion
Uninstall a managed plugin rocket remove <plugin-name>, then verify the file and data One plugin Depends on whether you kept backups
Uninstall a manually added plugin Stop server and remove or archive its DLL from Rocket/Plugins One plugin High if the DLL and data are archived
Remove Rocket/LDM completely Stop server and remove Modules/Rocket.Unturned after a full backup Framework and every Rocket plugin Recoverable only from a proper backup and compatible installation files

Final decision

For a normal plugin uninstall, stop the server, remove only the target DLL from Rocket/Plugins, decide whether to archive or delete its data, and restart to verify. Use /rocket unload only for a temporary runtime change. Remove Modules/Rocket.Unturned only when you intentionally want to eliminate the entire Rocket/LDM framework and accept the effect on every Rocket plugin.
