To move a Simple Machines Forum (SMF) installation from a subfolder such as /forum into your domain’s document root, you must do more than move files. Copy or move the complete SMF file set, then change the core paths in Settings.php and update the attachment, avatar, smiley, and theme paths stored in the database. Finish with SMF’s repair utility and a functional test.

The safest sequence is: back up the files and database, make sure the root is not occupied by another application, move the files, correct the absolute filesystem paths and public URL, update database path values, repair any incorrect settings, and test every feature that serves an image or writes a file.

An SMF installation has two kinds of location information:
- Filesystem paths tell PHP where the board files, source code, attachments, avatars, smileys, and themes exist on the server.
- Public URLs tell a browser where to request the forum and its images.
When the forum moves from a subfolder to the document root, both sets of values change. Moving the files alone leaves SMF looking for code and uploads under the old directory. Updating only the main URL leaves images, themes, avatars, or attachments pointing at the old address. Those mismatches can produce broken images, failed uploads, redirect loops, missing styles, or a completely unusable board.

SiteGround’s SMF migration guidance specifically calls for moving every file from the existing installation folder into public_html, then changing Settings.php and the related database values. Simple Machines’ repair utility likewise warns that incorrect installation paths and URLs can cause major problems.
Prepare before touching the installation
Confirm the destination
Identify the document root used by the domain. On many shared hosts it is named public_html, but your control panel may use another directory. Confirm that this is the root serving the domain you want to use; changing files in a different account or parked-domain directory will not move the intended forum.
Make sure the destination is not already occupied by an active application. SiteGround cautions that an existing script in the root can corrupt the migration. If a WordPress, another SMF installation, a framework, or even an old index file is active there, decide whether it must be removed, archived, or moved first. Do not overwrite an unrelated site without a separate backup and a rollback plan.
Create two independent backups
- Download the entire current SMF directory, including
Settings.php, theSourcesdirectory, themes, attachments, avatars, and custom files. - Export the SMF database with your hosting control panel or database administration tool. Keep the export outside the web root.
- Record the current values of
$boardurl,$boarddir, and$sourcedir, plus the old subfolder name. You will need them if you roll back. - Record the current document-root path and the destination path. A URL such as the root domain and a filesystem path such as
/home/account/public_htmlare different things and must not be interchanged.
Verify that the backup can actually be opened or downloaded before proceeding. A backup that was never tested is not a dependable rollback.

Plan the transition window
Moving files while users are posting can create a split state: new uploads may land in the old directory while visitors are already reaching the new one. If your SMF version provides a maintenance or offline control, enable it for the move. Otherwise, choose a quiet period, keep the old directory intact until testing is complete, and avoid making database changes from two locations at once.
Move the files and correct Settings.php
1. Move the complete SMF file set
- Open the current SMF installation directory in your host’s file manager or an SFTP client.
- Select all files and folders, including hidden files if your client displays them. The
Sourcesdirectory, theme directories, attachment directories, andSettings.phpmust be included. - Move the files into the domain’s document root. SiteGround’s published instruction is to “move all the files from your current SMF installation folder to your
public_htmlfolder.” Preserve the directory structure; do not flatten the contents ofSourcesor a theme directory. - Do not delete the old copy yet. Keeping it untouched gives you a straightforward rollback while the root installation is being checked.
If the file manager cannot move across locations, copy the files first, compare the file counts and key directories, and only then remove the old copy after the new installation works.
2. Set the public board URL
Open the root copy of Settings.php in a text editor that preserves PHP syntax. Change $boardurl to the URL visitors should use for the root forum. Remove the old subfolder and do not add a trailing slash. The value should end at the domain (or any deliberate non-folder path), not at /.
Do not put a filesystem path in $boardurl. This variable is public-facing and should use the site’s normal scheme and hostname, while $boarddir and $sourcedir use server paths.

3. Set the absolute board and source paths
Change $boarddir to the absolute filesystem path of the new root installation. Change $sourcedir to the absolute path of the Sources directory inside that installation. Both values must describe the server’s real directories; a relative value such as . is not a safe substitute for the absolute board path.
For example, if the root directory is /home/account/public_html, the source path is that directory followed by /Sources. Use the path shown by your hosting panel or SFTP client rather than guessing the account name. Check capitalization on case-sensitive servers.

Keep the existing variable names, semicolons, and PHP delimiters intact. Edit only the values unless you have a separate reason to change code. Upload the corrected file to the root copy and confirm its permissions still allow the web server to read it. A syntax error or an unreadable Settings.php can produce a blank page or a server error before SMF can display a useful message.
Update path and URL values stored in the database
SMF keeps several locations outside the three variables in Settings.php. The old subfolder must be removed from each applicable value. Use SMF’s administration tools or your database administration tool, and take another database export before editing rows.

Change paths selectively
Search for the old subfolder in the relevant configuration values rather than performing an unrestricted replacement across the entire database. A global replacement could alter post text, private messages, code examples, or intentionally preserved external links. The goal is to update installation locations, not rewrite user content.
For filesystem settings, use the complete absolute path. For URL settings, use the root public address and omit the old folder. Keep the distinction clear: a value ending in /Sources belongs to the server filesystem, while a value beginning with the site’s scheme and hostname belongs in a URL field.

Account for every theme
SMF can retain settings for more than the currently selected theme. Update theme_dir, theme_url, and images_url for each installed theme that points to the old folder. Otherwise the default theme may work while a user-selected or administrator preview theme still requests files from the former location.
Use SMF’s repair utility if paths are wrong
If the board does not load, the administrator area is inaccessible, or you are unsure whether the main values were saved correctly, use the Simple Machines repair utility documented for this purpose. Its path and URL section exposes boarddir and boardurl for correction and warns that these values can cause major problems when incorrect.
Use the utility to correct the root installation’s absolute directory and public URL, then save and reload the board. It is a repair step, not a substitute for moving files or updating the attachment, avatar, smiley, and theme values. If the utility cannot run because PHP fails before SMF starts, restore the backup Settings.php, correct the syntax and paths manually, and try again.
Verify the root installation before declaring success
Test from a private browser window as well as an existing session. This avoids mistaking a cached redirect or an old login cookie for a working migration.

- Authentication: Sign in, sign out, and sign in again. Check that the session cookie is issued for the intended host and that logout returns to the root URL.
- Navigation: Open the board index, several boards, individual topics, pagination links, profiles, search, and any custom pages. Inspect links for the old subfolder.
- Theme assets: Switch between installed themes if possible. Confirm stylesheets, JavaScript, icons, and theme images load without 404 errors.
- Smileys: Open the posting screen and confirm the smiley palette displays images from the new URL.
- Attachments: Upload a small test attachment, submit it, download it, and open it from a second session. This verifies both the upload directory and the public URL.
- Avatars: Upload or change a test avatar and view it in a post and profile.
- Permissions: Confirm the web server can read the moved files and write to the directories SMF uses for uploads. Do not make the entire installation broadly writable just to silence an error.
- Old-path scan: View page source or use browser developer tools to look for requests containing the former subfolder. Also inspect redirects and image URLs, not just visible text.
Check the server’s error log while performing these tests. A missing file, permission denial, or PHP include error usually identifies which path still contains the old location.
Troubleshoot common failure symptoms

Rollback if the root move is not ready
- Put the old subfolder back in service by restoring the original
Settings.phpvalues and database export if database changes were made. - Keep the root copy untouched so you can compare files and settings rather than repeatedly moving the same data.
- Confirm the old URL loads, authentication works, and no uploads were created only in the new location.
- Review the failed test and correct one class of path at a time before attempting the migration again.
Do not delete the old installation until the root copy has passed the attachment, avatar, smiley, theme, login, and link checks. Once the new location is stable and a fresh backup exists, remove the old copy or protect it from public access so two active installations cannot diverge.
Self-service move or managed migration?
A competent administrator can perform this migration with file-manager or shell access and database access. Managed hosting assistance can be useful when you cannot obtain the absolute document-root path, cannot safely edit the database, or need someone to monitor logs and recover quickly. The technical work is the same either way; what changes is who performs it and who handles rollback.

- The root document directory contains the complete SMF installation and is not sharing space with an unintended active script.

- The repair utility reports the correct board directory and URL, or those values have been verified manually.

- The old installation remains available until the new one passes testing, and a current backup is stored outside the web root.
