First identify what you are cleaning: isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and lint-free wipes are for thermal paste and oily residue, not proven copper-oxide removers. For actual tarnish, confirm the surface is bare copper, then use a cleaner explicitly labeled for cooler metals and follow its instructions. Avoid improvised acid mixtures or aggressive polishing: compatibility with plated, coated, or mixed-metal heatsinks is not established, and a brighter finish does not guarantee better cooling.
Identify the residue before cleaning
Thermal paste left on a heatsink base and copper tarnish are different problems, so the right cleaning method depends on what you see.

- Thermal paste or greasy residue: use a lint-free or anti-static wipe with IPA, or follow the cooler maker’s permitted alternative. Intel recommends a delicate anti-static wiper with IPA and letting the surface dry. Noctua permits dry lint-free wiping or, for more thorough cleaning, a lint-free tissue with mild washing-up liquid; it also lists IPA or cleaning wipes. These instructions address thermal compound, not oxidation. See Intel’s processor cleaning guidance and Noctua’s cooler cleaning guidance.
- Brown, dark, or dull discoloration on copper: this may be tarnish or oxidation. IPA is not established as an oxide remover; choose a product labeled for the material and cooler application instead.
Also check whether the copper-colored surface is actually bare copper. A base may be nickel-plated or coated, and a cooler may combine copper and aluminum. Do not assume a cleaner safe for bare copper is safe for every finish or assembly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemove thermal paste from the contact base
- Power down and unplug the computer, let it cool, and consult the computer and cooler service instructions. HP advises powering off and unplugging devices, avoiding direct cleaner sprays, and keeping moisture out of openings; follow the guidance for your specific system at HP’s cleaning guidance.
- If the heatsink is removed, wipe away paste with a lint-free or anti-static wiper and IPA, or use the alternative allowed by the cooler maker. If it remains installed, apply liquid only to the wipe—not the heatsink—and prevent it from reaching the motherboard or socket.
- Allow the surface to dry completely. Before reinstalling or applying fresh paste, ensure the cooler base and CPU are dry and free of thermal compound and grease, as Noctua specifies.

Use a cooler-specific metal cleaner
Thermalright markets Metal Bright as a metal-cleaning wax for oxidized copper or aluminum coolers and oxidized fingerprints. The company says it leaves a protective layer intended to reduce oxidation. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. Check the current label and use the product only as directed: Thermalright Metal Bright.

Do not treat general copper advice as a heatsink recipe
The Copper Development Association says citric-acid cleaners can remove tarnish without residue, while proprietary polishes may leave a residual film. This is general copper-surface guidance, not approval for every heatsink, plating, coating, joint, or nearby electronic component. It does not establish a safe acid concentration, contact time, or application method for a heatsink, so do not improvise one. See the association’s copper cleaning guidance.
Protect the finish and nearby electronics
- Do not use running water on a Noctua cooler. For other models, follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming water is safe.
- Avoid aggressive scouring and improvised acid mixtures, especially on plated, coated, mixed-metal, or assembled coolers. Available guidance does not establish that these methods preserve flatness, plating, soldered joints, or adjacent parts.
- Do not spray cleaner onto the heatsink or computer. Keep liquids away from the board, socket, and openings.
- After any permitted cleaning, leave the surface fully dry and free of cleaner or polish residue before reinstalling and applying fresh thermal interface material.
The Copper Development Association notes that “Once established, the patina is stable and protects the component from further oxidation unless it comes into contact with strong reagents.” That observation concerns copper generally; it is not a reason to leave residue on a thermal contact surface or a product-specific maintenance instruction. See its cleaning guidance.

When cleaning is cosmetic—and when to stop
A clean, flat contact surface matters more than making every copper surface look bright. If discoloration is confined to the fin stack and the contact base is sound, aggressive polishing may be unnecessary. No controlled heatsink testing establishes that removing cosmetic tarnish improves temperatures, so do not treat a brighter appearance as evidence of better cooling.
If the finish or material is uncertain, or the cooler maker’s instructions do not approve the cleaner, stop rather than risk the contact surface. For branded coolers, the model’s support guidance takes priority over general copper-cleaning advice.
