On a Qantas A380 from Sydney to Dallas, Business already gives you a fully flat bed, direct aisle access and access to the shared onboard lounge. First adds a larger, more individual seat, a longer advertised bed and eligible access to Qantas First lounges. Whether it is worth paying more depends on the actual fare or points difference—and whether those extras matter enough to you. First is only an option if your flight is operated by an A380, so check the aircraft assigned to your travel date.
First, confirm your Sydney–Dallas flight has an A380
Qantas announced daily A380 flying on the route from 1 January 2026, but aircraft assignments can vary by date. The Australian Department of Infrastructure’s 2026 timetable summary lists both A380-800 and B787-9 equipment across Sydney–Dallas date ranges. A non-A380 flight changes the cabin comparison, so check the aircraft on your itinerary and confirm that First is offered before weighing its value. What First and Business offer on the Qantas A380
Qantas’s published specifications describe two lie-flat cabins, but their layouts and onboard experience differ. These figures are airline specifications, not independent measurements or assessments.

The First bed’s listed maximum length is greater, but the width figures compare a First seat with a Business bed, so they are not like-for-like measurements. Qantas describes Business as being on the upper deck, where the suite “combines functionality with privacy and comfort in spacious surroundings.” That is the airline’s promotional description, not an independent evaluation. Why published seat counts may not match
Qantas’s general A380 page lists 70 Business seats, while its route-specific Sydney–Dallas A380 document search result shows a configuration beginning with 14 First and 64 Business seats. The available information does not establish a single count for every aircraft configuration. How to decide whether First is worth the premium
- Check the aircraft and cabin. Confirm your exact flight date shows an A380 and that First is available on that itinerary.
- Compare the real cost. Look at the First and Business cash fares and their fare conditions, or compare the points and any cash components for the bookings you can actually make.
- Use Business as the baseline. On the A380, it already provides a fully flat bed, direct aisle access and the shared onboard lounge.
- Decide whether First’s extras justify this specific difference. Consider the longer listed bed, individual seat, smaller cabin and eligible First lounge access in light of your own priorities.
There is no universal cash or points threshold supported for this route: the premium depends on live fares, award availability and upgrade inventory, none of which can be generalized without your date and booking details. If you mainly want a lie-flat journey, Business covers that need. First is easier to justify when the actual premium is acceptable to you and its additional space, cabin preference or ground-lounge experience has meaningful value.
