Use Audacity’s Truncate Silence effect to shorten long, low-volume pauses inside a recording, or manually ripple-delete empty gaps between clips. Then listen through the edited episode: an automatic tool cannot tell dead air from a pause that gives speech its natural rhythm. For YouTube’s podcast feature, publish each episode as a video in a podcast playlist; an MP3 alone is not a YouTube podcast episode.
First identify which kind of gap you need to remove
- Quiet audio inside a recording: Use Audacity’s Truncate Silence effect. It detects audio below a volume threshold for a minimum duration, then shortens qualifying passages.
- Empty space between clips: Use a ripple deletion to move later audio earlier and close the gap. Audacity may not process clip-boundary gaps with Truncate Silence unless the clip-movement preference is enabled.
- A pause between distinct episodes: Decide whether it is genuinely unwanted before editing. Episodes in a YouTube podcast playlist are separate videos, so the playlist order—not a continuous audio edit—determines how viewers move from one episode to another.
Shorten long silences in Audacity
1. Protect the original recording
Keep an untouched copy of each source recording or project before making edits. This gives you a way to recover the original pacing if automatic detection removes a breath, a quiet word, or a transition you meant to keep.

2. Set the silence threshold and duration
Open the recording in Audacity and select the audio to process. In Truncate Silence, set a threshold between -20 dB and -80 dB and a minimum duration. Audio must remain below the threshold for at least that long to count as silence; a quiet phrase or fade can therefore be detected just like dead air if it meets both conditions.
Choose a minimum duration that targets only the pauses you consider too long. Audacity’s manual illustrates shortening passages of at least 20 seconds to 5 seconds. Those numbers are an example, not a universal podcast setting: a reflective interview, devotional program, and fast-paced conversation may need different pacing.

3. Choose how the effect shortens qualifying passages
- Truncate Detected Silence: Shortens each qualifying passage to the same retained duration.
- Compress Excess Silence: Reduces only the portion beyond the detection duration, proportionally, rather than forcing each detected passage to one retained length.
Use the mode that fits your aim, then preview the result before applying the same choices to more material.
4. Handle multiple tracks without losing sync
When multiple tracks are selected, Audacity’s default behavior treats them as a mix and truncates silence only when it occurs at the same timeline position across the selected tracks. That is generally the safer choice for synchronized dialogue tracks. Independent truncation processes tracks separately and can desynchronize speakers, so use it only when the tracks are independent material whose timing does not need to remain linked.

If a gap between clips is not affected, check Audacity’s clip-movement preference: the manual notes that Truncate Silence may fail on such gaps unless “Editing a clip can move other clips” is enabled. For fades, apply Truncate Silence before adding them; the effect’s level-based detection can otherwise shorten quiet fades.
Close a manually selected gap
For a particular empty region or pause that automatic detection does not handle well, select it and use Audacity’s ripple-delete option to close the gap. With a ripple deletion, later audio moves earlier. Use an across-track ripple delete when later material on all tracks must remain aligned.

Do not confuse deleting a gap with silencing audio. Audacity’s Silence Audio command replaces selected audio with silence but preserves the selection’s duration, so it does not reduce elapsed time. Listen after a manual edit and undo it if the transition sounds abrupt; Audacity recommends leaving breaths and removing long gaps rather than cutting every pause, which can make speech sound rushed. Review the edit before making the YouTube version
Play the edited recording from start to finish. Pay particular attention to sentence boundaries, breaths, quiet words, fades, and transitions between speakers or segments. Listen for clipped syllables, unnatural jumps, or a pace that now feels hurried. If a quiet section was meaningful, raise the threshold or minimum duration, change the retained length, or restore that passage from your original.

Once the audio edit is approved, export it or use it to create the final episode video in your usual production workflow. Truncate Silence changes the timing of audio; it does not create a YouTube video or publish an episode.
Publish it as a YouTube podcast playlist
YouTube defines a podcast show as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. An MP3 file by itself cannot be turned directly into a YouTube podcast episode. Create or designate a podcast in YouTube Studio, add full-length video episodes, and arrange them in the intended listening order from the podcast details page. YouTube notes that some playlists may not be eligible for podcast features, including playlists containing content you do not own. See YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.

If by “streaming” you mean a live broadcast that plays files continuously, rather than publishing podcast episodes in a playlist, that is a separate workflow. YouTube’s live-streaming help covers getting started; the details here do not establish encoder settings for that setup.
