In OBS Studio, add a text source that reads a local text file, then have your playlist controller or a small script replace the file when the episode changes. If you want the YouTube listing itself to change instead, edit the broadcast metadata in YouTube Studio or use the Live Streaming API; that changes the listing, not the picture.
Choose where the episode title should appear
There are two different labels you can update, and they have different effects:

- On-screen overlay: Episode information appears inside the video image. OBS can render plain text from a file or richer content from a browser source. This is the clearest option when one continuous public broadcast plays multiple episodes.
- YouTube title or description: This changes the broadcast’s public video metadata, not text inside the picture. You can edit it in YouTube Studio or update it through the Live Streaming API.
A broadcast is the viewer-facing video or event; its associated stream resource supplies transmission settings. YouTube can bind a broadcast to a stream and reuse a stream resource, so the transmission setup and public listing are separate parts of the workflow. Show “Now playing” in the video with OBS
1. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the continuous live broadcast and configure its encoder and stream. You can set metadata when creating or scheduling, or edit it in the stream settings. Reusing stream settings copies metadata, settings, and the stream key to the new stream; edit the copied details before going live if they no longer apply. YouTube documents these options in Manage live stream settings.

2. Add a text-file source in OBS
- Open the scene used for the podcast broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, add a text source. In its properties, enable the option to read from a file and select a plain-text file for the episode label.
- Enter an initial value such as “Now playing: Episode 12 — The Example.”
- Position and size the source so it is legible over your background or artwork. Keep it above the background in the source stack so it is visible.

3. Update the file when the episode changes
Arrange for the playlist controller, media automation, or a small local script to replace the text file’s contents when the current episode changes. The OBS text-file source provides the display; connecting a particular playlist system to that file is an integration you must configure separately. The cited OBS documentation does not prescribe or test a specific playlist integration.

Use a simple, readable format—for example, “Now playing: Episode 12 — The Example”—and decide how to handle episodes without a title, skipped tracks, or a failed item. Check that the update process writes a complete line rather than briefly leaving a blank or partial label.

If you need artwork, formatting, links, or metadata from a remote feed, build an overlay page and add it to OBS as a browser source. OBS can load a local file or URL and lets you configure the browser source’s viewport. Its Browser Source guide lists support for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

5. Test changes against the actual broadcast
Preview a normal episode change, a playlist skip, and a reconnect before relying on the overlay. Check the displayed label against the audio transition in the actual viewer experience. YouTube describes latency as the time from capture to viewer playback and notes that lower latency can mean more buffering; an overlay update therefore should not be presented as guaranteed to appear instantly or in exact sync. OBS allows a custom browser-source frame rate, but its documentation does not set a universal refresh interval for episode labels.
Change the YouTube listing instead
If your goal is for the public YouTube video title or description to follow each episode, edit the broadcast details in YouTube Studio or update the video metadata through the Live Streaming API. YouTube’s API lifecycle documentation says these metadata fields can be updated at any time: Life of a Broadcast.

This does not add a label to the video image. Consider whether changing the listing is useful for viewers arriving mid-episode, and make clear what a changing title represents. For a continuous stream, a stable title plus a visible “Now playing” label is generally easier to scan without changing the identity of the live video.

Before you schedule the broadcast
- Check content rights: Confirm you have the rights needed to stream each recording. A continuous playlist does not change copyright obligations; review YouTube’s rules and your permissions before broadcasting.
- Make the listing useful: YouTube says tags have a minimal role in discovery except where content is commonly misspelled. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming and let viewers select “Notify me.” See Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the episode label operationally simple: Decide who or what updates it, what happens during a skipped or missing episode, and how you will verify it after a reconnect.
Troubleshooting the episode label
The overlay never appears
- Confirm the text source is enabled and that its file-reading option points to the intended file.
- Check that the source is positioned within the scene and is above the background in the source order.
- For a browser source, verify the local file or URL loads in the configured viewport.
The label stays on the previous episode
- Check whether the playlist controller or script actually replaced the file or updated the page feed.
- Test a manual file change first. If that displays correctly, investigate the automation’s episode-change trigger and its handling of skips.
- For browser overlays, check the page’s data refresh behavior; OBS’s configurable frame rate alone does not guarantee that the underlying episode data refreshes.
The label changes before or after the audio
Check the transition in the actual broadcast, not only in the OBS preview. Latency between capture and viewer playback can affect what viewers see and hear, and the documented sources do not establish a synchronization guarantee. Adjust your automation timing based on observed behavior rather than assuming a fixed delay works for every setup.
The YouTube title changed but the picture did not
You updated video metadata, not the OBS overlay. Use the text-file or browser-source method for information inside the video image.
