Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a graphical Linux setup, OBS Studio is the best place to start: it is free, open-source software with no watermark or commercial-use restriction. For a playlist-driven stream you want to automate with scripts, Liquidsoap paired with FFmpeg is the more programmable option. Neither tool guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation; the host, network, encoder settings, process supervision and recovery plan all matter.
Which Linux option fits your stream?
| Option | Best fit | What it does | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Creators who want an always-on YouTube stream without keeping a Linux computer running | Uploads a recording or playlist, then loops it from the cloud after you add your YouTube stream key. | One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps; the first day is free with no card. It plays uploaded video, not a camera feed. |
| OBS Studio | People who prefer a graphical, scene-based encoder and can keep a desktop session running | Encodes a stream from configured sources and sends it to YouTube. | OBS does not by itself establish unattended recovery. Connection stability and a sustainable bitrate affect dropped frames. OBS Project Help Portal |
| Liquidsoap with FFmpeg | Linux users comfortable with scripts, playlist logic and service supervision | Can combine a music playlist with a still image, encode the result with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube over RTMP. | The official example’s encoding values are starting points that need tuning for quality and the available connection. Liquidsoap official book |
| YouTube Live Streaming API | Developers who need programmatic broadcast scheduling or management | Provides broadcast and stream resources, with cuepoints that can insert ad breaks. | It is a developer interface, not a simpler replacement for configuring an encoder. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation |
For a no-cost, self-managed setup, choose OBS for a visual workflow or Liquidsoap and FFmpeg for scriptable playlist automation. If the important requirement is keeping the channel live while your computer is off, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: it runs uploaded videos continuously on YouTube without relying on your home computer or connection. Set up a Linux stream with OBS Studio
OBS is free and open source under GPLv2. The OBS Project says it has no watermark or use limitation and can be used commercially without restrictions. See the official OBS help portal for current installation, streaming and encoding guidance. Exact menus and available encoders can vary by Linux distribution and OBS build.
- Install OBS using guidance for your Linux distribution. Use the OBS Project’s official help resources rather than assuming package names or installation steps that may differ between distributions.
- Build a scene for the stream. Add the audio source or media source you intend to broadcast. If the stream needs a visual, add the appropriate image or other visual source. Confirm that audio is reaching OBS and that the scene looks as intended in its preview.
- Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. OBS says the wizard can set most basic settings. Review its output rather than treating it as a guarantee that a particular Linux machine and network can sustain a 24/7 stream.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect using the method offered by your OBS version, or enter the stream key if prompted. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Check output and video settings before going live. Set a resolution and frame rate your machine can encode and your connection can upload reliably. Choose a bitrate that the sustained upstream connection can support; OBS identifies an unstable connection or an unsustainable bitrate as possible causes of dropped frames. Use OBS’s current encoding guidance for codec, bitrate and keyframe recommendations for your chosen stream configuration; the available evidence does not establish one best setting for every Linux machine, network or YouTube channel.
- Start the stream and verify it in YouTube Studio. Check the live preview and status, and monitor OBS for dropped frames, encoding overload or audio problems. Do not assume a successful start means the stream will recover automatically if the process or connection later fails.
- Plan for unattended operation. A desktop encoder depends on its host, running session and network. Arrange a way to notice failures and restart the encoder or reconnect after an interruption; OBS’s free status is not an uptime or automatic-recovery guarantee.
Automate a playlist with Liquidsoap and FFmpeg
Liquidsoap’s official book documents a pattern for turning a music directory into a radio-style playlist, pairing its audio with a still image, encoding through FFmpeg and sending the result to YouTube’s RTMP endpoint. The steps below describe that pattern; they are not a copy-and-paste configuration that will work unchanged on every machine.

- Prepare a playlist source. Organize the audio you have rights to use and configure Liquidsoap to create a playlist from the music directory. Check how the playlist handles track transitions, missing files and the end of the list.
- Prepare the video source. Configure a still image as the visual source for the stream. The documented example muxes this image with the radio audio so that YouTube receives an audio-and-video stream.
- Obtain the YouTube stream key. Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio and copy its stream key. Store it in a separate protected file and have the script read it from there; do not put the key directly into a script that might be shared or exposed.
- Configure encoding and output. Use FFmpeg to encode the combined source. The Liquidsoap example uses H.264 video and MP3 audio, then sends the stream to YouTube over RTMP. Treat its sample values as a starting point: the book says they require tuning for better quality, and the right settings depend on the host and upload connection.
- Run and supervise the process. Start the Liquidsoap job, confirm that YouTube Studio receives the stream, and monitor logs and connection state. For unattended use, configure Linux process supervision and a recovery procedure appropriate to your system; the documented media workflow alone does not ensure a crashed process will restart or a dropped connection will be restored.
Liquidsoap is a better fit than a graphical encoder when playlist behavior and automation matter more than visual scene editing. Its flexibility also means you need to understand the script, FFmpeg configuration, key-file permissions and the service that keeps the process running.
Copyright: the software does not grant music rights
Whether you use OBS, Liquidsoap or a cloud service, you need rights for the music and recordings you stream. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content. If it detects such content, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the material remains, the live stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance

- Check the specific rights. For Indian music, confirm that your permissions cover the particular compositions and recordings, the intended live-stream use and the relevant territories. The definitions in India’s Copyright Act do not, on their own, establish which licenses a particular catalog or channel needs. Seek guidance from the relevant rights holders or qualified legal counsel for your circumstances. India’s Copyright Act text
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. YouTube says a license alone may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. This can matter even when a stream is restricted to territories where the streamer has the necessary rights. Coordinate with relevant rights owners when applicable.
- Expect possible claims after the broadcast. Archived live streams may receive Content ID claims after the stream ends, so a clean live session is not proof that the archive is clear.
- Do not treat live Content ID matching as a general workaround. YouTube documents this feature for certain partners using Content Manager, with requirements including worldwide rights and exclusive ownership. It is not a general clearance mechanism for ordinary channels. YouTube’s live copyright guidance
Keeping a 24/7 stream running: what can fail?
Continuous streaming depends on more than the encoder. A Linux machine can lose power or network access; an encoder can stop; settings can exceed the connection’s sustained upload capacity; and YouTube can interrupt a stream. Neither OBS nor the documented Liquidsoap example proves that a particular setup will stay online indefinitely.

- Dropped frames in OBS: investigate network instability and whether the configured bitrate is higher than the connection can sustain. Reduce demand or improve the connection, then verify performance in the live preview.
- Liquidsoap or FFmpeg stops: inspect process output and service logs, then check the playlist, media files, encoder configuration and stream-key file permissions. Configure a supervisor to restart the process if that behavior is needed.
- YouTube stops or interrupts the broadcast: check YouTube Studio for stream status, warnings or copyright notices. A reconnect may not resolve a rights issue; address the notice and relevant permissions.
- The stream starts but quality is poor: tune resolution, bitrate and encoding settings against the actual host and upload connection. Liquidsoap’s book explicitly treats its sample settings as starting points, while OBS points users to its encoding guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the channel to stay live without leaving a Linux PC on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. There is no computer or home connection to keep running; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI is supported; card checkout is available worldwide. To try it, start your free first day with StreamNeo.
