To restore a modded GTA V installation, close the game, back up your saves and recordings, disable both archive and script mods, and run your launcher’s file-verification tool. Rename the OpenIV mods folder, move loaders such as dinput8.dll and ScriptHook files out of the game directory, then verify the installation through Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or Rockstar Games Launcher. If verification cannot repair overwritten files or persistent conflicts, use a clean uninstall and reinstall. This Windows PC procedure applies separately to the Legacy and Enhanced editions.
What removing GTA 5 mods actually involves
“Removing a mod” can mean two different things. You may only need to stop optional files from loading, or you may need to replace original game files that were edited in place. The safest restoration path starts with reversible changes and escalates only when the game remains altered or unstable.

- Archive mods: OpenIV commonly keeps edited archives in a separate
modsfolder. Renaming that folder prevents the alternate archive tree from loading, but it does not repair an original archive that was edited directly. - Script and ASI mods: A loader beside
GTA5.exe, oftendinput8.dll, can load ScriptHookV, ScriptHookVDotNet, trainers, and other plug-ins. Moving the loader and related files out of the directory disables them without deleting them. - Overwritten originals: If a tool changed files in the real game archives, the launcher must download clean copies. Verification is the first repair attempt; a clean reinstall is the fallback when verification is insufficient.
The workflow is for the Windows PC version. Console installations do not expose the same folders or launcher verification controls. Before starting, identify whether your copy is Legacy or Enhanced; support for mod tools and file layouts can differ, so do not mix files from one edition with the other.
Choose the least destructive recovery path
Use the following decision guide before deleting anything. Renaming or moving a file is reversible; deleting user-data folders is not unless you have a separate copy.

| Situation | First action | Why | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only OpenIV archive mods are present | Rename mods to mods_off |
Stops the alternate archive tree while preserving it for later mod use | The game still crashes or verification reports altered files |
| ScriptHook, ASI, trainer, or ReShade files are present | Move dinput8.dll and mod-specific loader files outside the game folder |
Prevents scripts from loading without permanently deleting them | GTA V still starts with errors or the installation was edited directly |
| Launcher reports missing or damaged files | Run the launcher’s Verify action | Replaces missing or damaged originals | Errors remain after verification |
| Persistent altered-client, permission, or file-conflict errors | Perform a clean uninstall and reinstall | Removes residual files that verification may leave behind | Only after saves, settings, and recordings are backed up |
Back up saves, settings, and recordings first
Do this before uninstalling, deleting residual files, or removing Rockstar user-data directories. Rockstar warns that deleting DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV or AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV can remove saves, settings, and recorded videos that are not backed up.
What to copy
- The GTA V Profiles and save folders in your Rockstar user-data locations.
- Configuration and settings files you want to preserve.
- Rockstar Editor or other recorded videos.
- A dated copy of the current game directory if you want to keep mod files for later use. This is optional and can require substantial storage.
How to make the backup safely
- Close GTA V, the launcher, mod managers, and any overlay that may still hold a file open.
- Open File Explorer and copy the relevant Profiles/save folders, settings, and recordings to a separate internal drive, external drive, or other storage location.
- Keep the backup outside the GTA V installation and outside the two Rockstar user-data directories. A backup in a folder you later delete is not a backup.
- Open a few copied files or inspect their sizes so you know the copy completed before proceeding.
Do not assume cloud synchronization protects every local save, setting, or recording. Treat the separate copy as the recovery source.
Find the correct GTA V installation
Use the launcher’s displayed install location rather than guessing a default path. Steam, Epic Games Launcher, and Rockstar Games Launcher can place the game in different libraries or drives, and a computer can contain more than one GTA V folder.

Disable OpenIV archive mods without deleting them
OpenIV’s documented purpose is to keep modified archives separate from the originals by using a mods folder. Renaming that folder is the safest first test because the game can no longer see the alternate archive tree, while the files remain available for a modded setup later.
- Close GTA V and its launcher.
- Open the live game directory containing
GTA5.exe. - Locate the folder named
mods. - Rename it to a temporary name such as
mods_off. Do not leave a second folder namedmodsin the same directory. - Start the game once. If it reaches the normal unmodded menu, the alternate archive tree was disabled.
This is an isolation step, not proof that every original file is intact. OpenIV can make actual game-file changes, and its documentation recommends backups. If a mod edited the original archives instead of using the separate mods tree, verification or a clean reinstall is safer than trying to identify every changed archive manually.
Disable ScriptHook, ASI, trainer, and ReShade files
Archive mods and script mods are independent. Removing or renaming mods does not stop a loader from injecting scripts, and moving a loader does not restore an archive changed in place. Check the same directory as GTA5.exe for files that a mod’s installation instructions placed there.
Move the loader first
- With GTA V and the launcher closed, locate
dinput8.dllin the game directory. - Create a temporary folder outside the game directory, such as a folder on the desktop named
GTA5_mod_backup. - Move
dinput8.dllinto that temporary folder. Moving it, rather than deleting it, lets you restore the mod setup later.
GTAPoliceMods explains that moving dinput8.dll stops ASI and ScriptHookV mods from loading. If the file is absent, continue checking for the other components installed by your mods.

- Mod-specific DLLs, scripts, or folders placed beside
GTA5.exe.
Use each mod’s own installation notes to identify its files. Do not move core Rockstar executables or folders merely because their names are unfamiliar. If you cannot distinguish a mod file from an original, leave it in place and let file verification decide whether it must be replaced.
Verify the installation in your launcher
After isolating the optional files, run verification. The process checks the installed files and replaces missing or damaged originals. It is quicker and less destructive than reinstalling the entire game, but it cannot restore personal files you delete from Rockstar’s user-data directories.
| Launcher | Verification path | Clean-install fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | Library → GTA V → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity of Game Files | Uninstall in Steam, delete residual files in the Steam GTA V folder, then reinstall through Steam |
| Epic Games Launcher | Open the game’s three-dot menu → Verify | Uninstall in Epic, remove remaining files in the Epic GTA V folder, then reinstall |
| Rockstar Games Launcher | Open the game options → Verify Integrity | Uninstall in Rockstar Games Launcher, remove residual files, then reinstall |
What to expect during verification
- The launcher may scan for several minutes and may redownload files it considers missing or damaged.
- Do not interrupt the process or restore the old
modsfolder while it is running. - When verification finishes, launch the game before adding any mod files back. This gives you a clean baseline for troubleshooting.
If the launcher says the files are valid but the game still loads a trainer, check for a second installation, a remaining loader, custom launch arguments, or a mod manager that restores files automatically.

When verification is not enough
Use a clean install when verification cannot clear crashes, altered-client messages, permission conflicts, or persistent file errors. Rockstar’s clean-install guidance says, “A clean install ensures that there are no file conflicts or problems with permissions.” A clean install is also the safer choice when a mod edited original archives and you cannot establish which files changed.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box.
Clean-install sequence
- Confirm that your save, settings, and recording backups open correctly.
- Uninstall GTA V through the launcher that owns the installation: Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or Rockstar Games Launcher.
- After uninstalling, open the former installation location and delete leftover GTA V files and folders. Do not delete backed-up user data.
- Check for another residual game directory on the same drive or in a custom library location. Remove only files belonging to the uninstalled installation.
- Reinstall through the same launcher and select the correct Legacy or Enhanced edition.
- Run the newly installed game once before copying saves or testing mods.
- Restore personal saves and settings selectively from your backup. Keep the old
modsfolder, loaders, and scripts out until the unmodded client works.
Do not delete DocumentsRockstar GamesGTAV or AppDataLocalRockstar GamesGTAV as a shortcut to a clean install unless the relevant saves, settings, and recordings are already stored elsewhere. Those directories contain user data, not just disposable game binaries.
Prepare the restored installation for GTA Online
Official GTA Online requires a clean, compatible client. Before connecting:
- Keep the
modsfolder renamed or outside the installation. - Keep
dinput8.dll, ScriptHook components, trainers, ReShade files, and other mod loaders out of the live directory. - Clear custom launch arguments that bypass normal startup or BattlEye.
- Launch GTA V through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Launcher rather than through a mod shortcut.
- Re-enable BattlEye. Rockstar states that launching GTA Online without BattlEye will not allow the game to connect to official GTA Online servers.
Rockstar also warns that an altered client may require a clean install. If Online refuses to connect after verification, do not keep experimenting with loaders in the same installation; repeat the clean-install procedure and test the untouched client first.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Legacy and Enhanced: keep the files separate
Rockstar’s support materials distinguish the Legacy and Enhanced PC editions. Mod tools may support one edition, the other, or neither at a particular version. A loader or archive built for Legacy should not be copied into Enhanced, and an Enhanced mod should not be assumed to work with Legacy.
Best Value
- Identify the edition shown by your launcher before backing up or changing files.
- Keep separate backup folders with the edition name in each folder.
- Verify the same edition you repaired; switching editions can make a correct repair appear unsuccessful.
- After a game update, recheck mod compatibility before restoring any loader or archive.
Common symptoms and the correct fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Game starts only when a trainer is present | A loader or script dependency is still being used | Move dinput8.dll and every trainer/ScriptHook component out, then verify |
Game crashes after renaming mods |
An original archive may have been edited, or a script loader remains | Remove script components and run verification; use a clean install if the crash persists |
| Launcher verification completes but an altered-client error remains | Residual files, custom arguments, permissions, or an incomplete cleanup | Clear launch arguments, confirm the correct folder, and perform a clean reinstall |
| Saved game appears missing | User-data folder was deleted, moved, or replaced | Restore the backed-up Profiles/save folders; do not overwrite the backup with an empty folder |
| Online will not connect | BattlEye is bypassed or the client is still altered | Restore BattlEye, remove loaders and arguments, launch through the official launcher, and reinstall if necessary |
| Verification repairs one installation but the modded game still opens | The launcher is pointing to a different GTA V directory | Use the launcher’s displayed install location and inspect the folder containing GTA5.exe |
How to avoid losing a working mod setup next time
Once the original game launches correctly, keep the clean and modded states easy to separate.
- Store a dated copy of the clean game-directory state before adding mods, if you have enough storage.
- Keep the OpenIV
modsfolder separate from original archives and rename it when switching to Online. - Keep loaders and scripts in a clearly labeled backup folder rather than deleting them during troubleshooting.
- Record whether each mod targets Legacy or Enhanced and note the game version for which it was installed.
- Back up saves and recordings independently of the game directory.
An external SSD is optional for a dated copy of the game directory and separate saves; choose capacity after checking the size of your local installation instead of relying on a fixed recommendation.
Do you need to buy or download anything?
Usually no. File isolation and launcher verification use the installation and launcher you already have. A clean reinstall requires your existing account entitlement and installation files. If you own a boxed PC copy, Rockstar documents that a new boxed GTAV PC version includes DVD discs and a one-use Rockstar activation code; activation grants the Social Club account a download entitlement but does not add the game to Steam. Availability and packaging vary by region, so confirm the current edition and activation method before purchasing replacement media.
Recommended Free Tools
General Windows-maintenance utilities are not GTA archive restorers. No software should be treated as a substitute for disabling the actual loaders, verifying the game through its launcher, or reinstalling when original files were overwritten.
Recommended order of operations
- Close GTA V and identify the owning launcher and edition.
- Back up Profiles/save folders, settings, recordings, and any mod files you want to keep.
- Locate the live directory through the launcher and confirm
GTA5.exeis present. - Rename
modstomods_off. - Move
dinput8.dll, ScriptHook components, trainers, ReShade files, and other mod-specific files out of the directory. - Verify files using Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Launch the unmodded game once and check that saves load.
- For GTA Online, clear custom launch arguments, restore BattlEye, and use the official launcher path.
- If errors or crashes remain, uninstall through the correct launcher, delete residual installation files, and reinstall.
This order preserves the most data, gives you a clean diagnostic checkpoint, and reserves the disruptive step—deleting residual files and reinstalling—for cases where file isolation and verification cannot produce a trustworthy original client.
