To remove an emoji reaction you added to a message, open the reaction controls and select your reaction again. An emoji typed into a message is part of the text, so it can’t be removed on its own once sent. Emoji suggestions while you type come from your phone’s keyboard, not from a WhatsApp switch.
First, work out which kind of emoji you mean

WhatsApp documents reacting to messages separately from using emoji, and the two are different controls. The WhatsApp Messaging page likewise describes reactions as a feature, shown beneath messages.

Remove an emoji reaction you added
- Open the chat and find the message you reacted to.
- Open the reaction controls for that message. On a phone this is the reactions view under the message; on desktop or web it is the same reactions area.
- Select the emoji reaction you already applied. Selecting it again removes it.
- Check that the badge under the message is gone.
Exact menu labels can vary by platform and app version, and WhatsApp publishes separate instructions for mobile and web/desktop. WhatsApp says the sender is not notified when you remove a reaction. It also cautions that the recipient might have seen the reaction before you removed it, or may still see it if removal doesn’t succeed. A poor connection is a likely reason to confirm the badge is really gone.
You can only remove your own reaction this way. Other people’s reactions are theirs to remove.

Remove an emoji from a message you haven’t sent
While the text is still in the compose box, place the cursor after the emoji and press backspace or delete, as you would for any character. Emoji count as characters in the draft, so nothing special is needed.
Remove an emoji from a message you already sent
The emoji in a sent message is part of its text. WhatsApp’s help pages linked in this guide don’t establish a way to strip out just the emoji, and they don’t confirm the current edit or delete options and time limits for each platform. Don’t assume one exists. Check WhatsApp’s current Help Center entry for your platform and app version. Practical fallbacks:

- If the option is available to you, deleting the message for everyone, then sending a corrected version, removes the emoji from the conversation. Whether and for how long this works depends on your app version, so confirm in the Help Center first.
- If it isn’t available, send a short follow-up message with the correction.
Deleting a message is not the same as removing a reaction, and neither removes emoji from other people’s devices in any way you can control.
Stop emoji appearing while you type
WhatsApp’s emoji instructions for iPhone point to the iPhone keyboard, which means emoji entry and suggestions are handled by the operating system. No WhatsApp-wide setting for removing emoji is documented.

On iPhone
Apple Support says you add emoji with the Emoji or globe button on the keyboard, and describes predictive-text controls in the iOS keyboard settings. To cut down on suggestions, turn off predictive text under Settings > General > Keyboard, and remove the Emoji keyboard from your keyboard list if you don’t want it. Be aware that Apple’s tip about tapping an emoji to swap it for a word applies only to Apple’s Messages app, not WhatsApp.
On Android
The sources cited in this guide don’t cover Android keyboards. Suggestion options live in your keyboard app’s own settings (for example under its text correction or suggestions section), and labels differ by keyboard and manufacturer.

Don’t confuse this with storage cleanup
Meta’s March 26, 2026 announcement covers tools to delete large files and clear media while keeping chat history. These manage storage and do not strip emoji characters from message text.
