The owner’s file can still exist while your MEGA link fails. A MEGA link is a separate object from the file. It can be expired, invalid, disabled by the owner, or removed for a Terms of Service violation. It can also fail on your side if the URL is incomplete, the decryption key is missing or wrong, or a link password is needed. The exact error message tells you which of these applies, so start there.
What each MEGA message means
MEGA’s official web-client English localization has a separate message for each failure state. These are interface strings, not a diagnosis of your particular link. They still tell you which check to run first.

The same client also directs users to https://mega.nz/support for assistance. The interface text does not tell you whether the owner moved or deleted an item, whether a given takedown happened, or whether MEGA has an outage at the moment. Don’t assume any of those without evidence.

Step-by-step fix
- Capture the exact error text. “Invalid,” “expired,” a key mismatch, and a password prompt each lead to a different fix. Copy the full wording instead of paraphrasing it to the owner.
- Get the full URL again. Ask the owner to copy the link from MEGA’s sharing controls and send it without editing. Chat apps and email clients sometimes cut or reformat long links, so paste it into your browser’s address bar as a whole.
- Check the decryption key. If the owner sent the key separately from the link, confirm you have the complete key and that it belongs to this link. Keys from different shares cause the “doesn’t match” message.
- Look for a password prompt. If MEGA asks for a password, only the link’s creator can provide it. Ask them directly.
- Have the owner check the share status. They should open the item in their own account, look at its link, and confirm it is active and not expired. If it is disabled or expired, they can generate a new link and send it to you.
- Treat a removal message as a status decision. If the message says the link was removed for a Terms of Service violation, don’t look for a workaround. The owner should check for any notice from MEGA and contact support.
- Escalate with the exact error. If a link is still invalid or removed after the owner re-shares it, contact MEGA through the official support page. Include the full error text.
Why “the file is still there” doesn’t settle it
Having the file in the owner’s account and having a working public link are two separate things. Links can expire, be disabled, or be removed while the underlying file stays untouched. A valid-looking link can also fail because the key or password is wrong. The owner’s confirmation that the file exists tells you nothing about the link, so ask them to test the exact link they sent you.
