The safe response is to work out when the noise happens, rule out other components, and contact the manufacturer if the sound is new, getting worse, or comes with other problems. Don’t open the unit. Replacement is an option, but no replacement guarantees silence.
What coil whine is
Corsair’s support documentation explains the mechanism. When current through an inductor changes, the magnetic field around it changes too. That produces a small attraction and repulsion in the coils, which shows up as vibration and audible sound. Because power supplies contain inductors and the current they handle changes with the computer’s demand, a PSU can whine.

Corsair’s position is that “Coil whine is not exactly a defect, but rather a byproduct of the components working as intended.” The sound alone doesn’t prove failure. Corsair also says the noise may occur under particular loads or at idle. In rare cases, it says, something like a poorly connected cable or worn electromagnetic coils may be involved. No universal field test separates harmless coil whine from a fault.

Step 1: Confirm the sound and where it comes from
Note when it happens
Write down when the noise appears: at startup, at idle, during gaming, or during a heavy workload. Coil whine is typically described as a high-pitched electrical whistle or whine. Fan noise and the ordinary click of a relay are different things, so don’t lump them together.

Compare the sound as the computer moves between idle and a workload you know well. This helps you describe the problem to support. It isn’t a definitive test of PSU health.
Don’t assume it’s the PSU
Other components can produce coil whine, so a high-pitched noise isn’t necessarily coming from the power supply. ASUS’s coil whine FAQ is written about laptops rather than PSUs, so it supports only general points. Coil whine can be easier to hear in a quiet room, and people differ in how well they hear high frequencies. If the noise is only noticeable in a silent room, that is useful context for support.

- Fully Modular: Reliable and efficient low-noise power supply with fully modular cabling, so you only have to connect the cables your system needs.
- Cybenetics Gold-Certified: Rated for up to 91% efficiency, resulting in lower power consumption, less noise, and cooler temperatures.
- ATX 3.1 Compliant: Compliant with the ATX 3.1 power standard from Intel, supporting PCIe 5.1 and resisting transient power spikes.
- Native 12V-2x6 Connector: Ensures compatibility with the latest graphics cards with a direct GPU to PSU connection – no adapter necessary.
- Embossed Cables with Low-Profile Combs: Sleek, ultra-flexible embossed cables look great and make installing and connecting the RMx a breeze.
Keep the investigation external. Don’t insert objects, take off the PSU cover, or disconnect live components to find the source.

Step 2: Decide whether it looks ordinary or concerning
| Situation | Reasonable response |
|---|---|
| Steady whine under certain loads or at idle, no other symptoms | Often consistent with the behavior Corsair describes as normal. You can live with it, or ask the manufacturer whether it’s expected for your model. |
| Sound is new, suddenly changed, or unusually loud | Contact the PSU manufacturer’s support team. |
| Noise comes with power loss, instability, a burning smell, or other unusual behavior | Stop assuming it’s harmless coil whine and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician. This is a cautious recommendation, not a diagnosis. |
| Noise is tolerable on paper but unacceptable to you | Ask about warranty service or consider a replacement, knowing the result isn’t guaranteed. |
Step 3: What not to do
- Don’t open the PSU. Corsair’s safety guidance warns that high voltages are present and there are no user-serviceable components. ASUS’s PSU guidance likewise warns against opening, repairing, or cleaning the unit internally.
- Don’t try internal fixes. Opening the unit may also affect warranty coverage, so check the current terms for your specific product.
- Don’t mix modular cables. Matching connector shape or brand isn’t enough. ASUS instructs users to use only the modular cables supplied with that PSU. Follow the exact PSU maker’s compatibility guidance if you need a replacement cable.
- Don’t expect software to help. This is a hardware vibration in the power supply. Nothing in the sources supports a software fix.
Step 4: Contact the manufacturer
Corsair asks owners with questions or concerns about PSU coil whine to contact its support team, and its PSU FAQ sends owners with continuing issues to Customer Support. Use the support channel for the actual maker of your unit. When you write in, include the model, when the noise occurs, how it has changed, and any other symptoms.

Whether you qualify for warranty service or replacement depends on the product, your region, the purchase date, and the applicable terms. These can’t be generalized. If the manufacturer decides the unit is faulty, service or replacement is reasonable.
Step 5: If you replace the PSU
Replacement makes sense if support recommends it or the noise is unacceptable to you. A new unit can also whine, so expect a chance of improvement, not a promise. Before buying, compare these points:
Rank #4
- 80 PLUS GOLD CERTIFIED
- 10-year limited warranty, guaranteeing long term reliable operation
- Fully modular design
- ATX 3.1 & PCIE 5.1
- Capacity for your system’s power needs
- Required connectors
- Form factor, so it fits your case
- Warranty terms in your region
- Credible reports about noise from the specific model you’re considering
With a modular replacement, use only the cables confirmed for that exact unit. The sources don’t establish that any particular model or brand is quiet, so don’t rely on a “silent” claim without model-specific evidence.
