Stop running the game or installer, disconnect sensitive account activity, uninstall the program from Windows, update Microsoft Defender, and run a Full scan. If detections return or Windows cannot clean them, run Microsoft Defender Offline. Removing the visible game alone is not enough: an installer can leave files, scheduled persistence, or credential-stealing malware elsewhere on the computer.
This guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10, explains which scan to use, shows what to do with quarantined files, and gives account-recovery and escalation steps when a download may have exposed passwords or payment details.

What to do first when a game may contain malware
Treat the computer as potentially compromised until a complete scan says otherwise. Do not launch the game, rerun its installer, open a crack or key generator, or restore a file that Windows Security has quarantined just to make the game start.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Stop execution. Close the game and installer. Do not double-click the download again.
- Pause sensitive activity. Stop signing in to banking, shopping, email, password-manager, work, or social accounts on that PC while you investigate. The Federal Trade Commission advises immediately stopping logins involving usernames, passwords, or other sensitive information when malware may be present.
- Record the alert. Write down the Windows Security detection name, the file path, the download source, and the approximate time. Take a screenshot if useful, but do not open the detected file. This information can help a technician identify the threat and prevents you from deleting the only useful evidence too early.
- Keep the computer powered on only as needed. If the system is behaving normally, proceed with the steps below. If it is rapidly changing files, displaying ransom demands, or showing signs of account takeover, disconnect it from the network and seek professional help rather than continuing to use it.
Do not assume that a warning is harmless because the game came from a familiar-looking page. Conversely, a potentially unwanted application (PUA) warning is not automatically proof of a virus. The detection name and file path matter, so preserve them before cleanup.

Uninstall the game and any unfamiliar companion software
Use Windows’ normal uninstall controls rather than deleting random folders. A proper uninstall removes registered components and gives Windows Security a clearer starting point.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the game, its installer, launcher, “helper,” or other program installed at the same time that you do not recognize.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the program’s own removal wizard. Do not accept optional bundled software during any repair or uninstall prompt.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select the game or unfamiliar related program and choose Uninstall.
- Finish the uninstall wizard and restart only when Windows or the program requests it.
Microsoft’s guidance expects unwanted software to offer a clear, straightforward uninstall path. If an entry has no uninstall option, the wizard fails, or the program immediately returns, do not repeatedly run the installer. Note the name and path and move to scanning or professional assistance.
Remove the original download at the right time
After the program is uninstalled, delete the remaining installer, archive, or disk-image file if Windows Security or the software’s standard uninstall process has identified it as unwanted. Empty the Recycle Bin after the file is quarantined or no longer needed as evidence. If a technician may need the sample, leave it quarantined and record its location instead of permanently erasing it.
Never whitelist, restore, or exclude a detection merely because the game will not run without it. A legitimate false positive should be investigated using the detection name and the publisher’s official support channel, not bypassed blindly.
Update Windows Security before scanning
Old security intelligence can miss a recently distributed installer. Open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, and use the update control to obtain the latest security intelligence before starting the scan. Keep the PC connected to the internet for the update, but avoid logging in to sensitive accounts on the potentially infected machine.

If Windows Security reports that protection is disabled, tampered with, or managed by an organization, do not install a second random “cleaner” from the web. Record the message and ask the device manufacturer, your organization’s administrator, or a trusted malware professional for help.
Run a Microsoft Defender Full scan
A Full scan is the normal next step after uninstalling a suspicious game. In Microsoft Support’s definition, “Full scan: Scans every file and program on your device.” It checks the whole computer rather than only the download folder.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan, then choose Scan now.
- Leave the computer powered and let the scan finish. A large disk can take a long time.
- Review the results in Windows Security. Allow Microsoft Defender to quarantine or remove detected items.
- Restart if Windows Security requests it, then check Protection history for the final action.
Do not judge the result solely by whether the game opens. A clean-looking desktop does not prove that every file was safe, and a quarantined item may be outside the game’s installation directory. Record each detection name and path before clearing history.
When to use Microsoft Defender Offline
Use the offline scan when the detection returns, the installer appears to have installed persistence, or Windows Security cannot clean the item while Windows is running. Microsoft describes it this way: “Microsoft Defender Offline will load and perform a quick scan of your PC in the Windows Recovery Environment.” Scanning before the normal Windows session starts gives persistent malware less opportunity to hide or interfere.
Start the offline scan
- Save open work and close applications.
- Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan).
- Choose Scan now and confirm the restart.
- Allow the computer to reboot into the Windows Recovery Environment and complete the scan. Do not interrupt power during the restart.
- After Windows starts again, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history to review the result.
The offline scan is a restart-based cleanup step, not a replacement for the Full scan. Use the Full scan to examine every file and program, and use Offline when the running Windows environment cannot reliably remove or inspect the threat.

Choosing the right cleanup action
| Action | Coverage | Execution state | Recovery impact | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard uninstall | Removes the registered game and related program components | Windows is running | Usually no restart unless requested | The game is unwanted and has a normal uninstall entry |
| Delete the installer or archive | Removes the original download after it is identified as unsafe or no longer needed as evidence | Windows is running | No special recovery step | The file has been quarantined or a technician no longer needs it |
| Defender Full scan | Every file and program on the device | Windows is running | May take substantial time; restart if requested | After uninstalling, or whenever a complete check is needed |
| Defender Offline scan | A pre-boot scan in the Windows Recovery Environment | Windows is not running normally | Mandatory restart and temporary loss of normal desktop access | Detections recur, persistence is suspected, or normal cleanup fails |
Choose the least disruptive action that answers the security question, but do not stop at uninstalling when a suspicious file has executed. The important distinction is coverage: uninstalling targets the visible application, while a Full scan examines the rest of the PC and Offline scan works before ordinary Windows processes load.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to do if Windows Security finds a Trojan or other malware
Allow quarantine or removal
For a confirmed malicious detection, let Windows Security quarantine or remove the item. Do not select “Allow on device,” restore it, or add an exclusion simply because it belongs to a game directory. If the game will not run afterward, that is preferable to executing a file Windows has identified as dangerous.
Read the detection details
Open Protection history and note the detection name, affected file, severity, and action taken. A name such as a Trojan classification indicates that the file is treated as malicious; a PUA classification means Windows considers the software potentially unwanted. A PUA remains available for action until you choose a response in Windows Security, so select quarantine or removal when you do not deliberately want the program.
Run the Full scan even after one item is removed
A Trojan may have dropped additional files before detection. Removing the alert’s single file does not establish that the rest of the computer is clean. Complete the Full scan and, if the item returns or cannot be removed, follow with Defender Offline.
Protect passwords, payment details, and other accounts
If you entered credentials or payment information after launching the download, assume those details may have been exposed. Use a different device that you trust, such as a clean phone or another computer, for account recovery.

- Change the password for the affected account first, then change any other account that reused it.
- Make every new password unique. Do not copy the possibly exposed password into another service.
- Enable two-factor authentication wherever it is available.
- Review recent sign-ins, active sessions, recovery email addresses, forwarding rules, and newly created devices.
- Contact your bank or card issuer through the number on the card or an official statement if payment information was entered. Ask what monitoring or replacement is appropriate.
- Tell work or school administrators if the PC was used to access organizational accounts.
The FTC specifically recommends changing passwords and enabling two-factor authentication when malware may have given an attacker access to accounts. Do not wait for an unauthorized transaction before taking these steps.

Contact the device manufacturer or a trusted professional if any of the following occurs:
- Windows Security cannot remove the detection or the same item returns after restart.
- Defender Offline reports a threat but cleanup fails.
- The computer remains unstable, unusually slow, or repeatedly crashes after the scan.
- Security settings are disabled or changed without your permission.
- Unknown accounts, browser extensions, scheduled tasks, or remote-access tools appear.
- You cannot interpret the detection name or determine which installer executed.
- The PC contains sensitive business, health, financial, or personal data that cannot be risked.
The FTC recommends contacting the device manufacturer or a trusted professional when scans fail or the user cannot interpret the results. A complete reset or Windows reinstall can remove persistent software, but it should be considered only after making a current backup and obtaining appropriate guidance. Do not copy unknown executable files into the backup, and do not restore a backup over a still-infected installation without a plan.
How to tell whether the game caused the infection
Timing alone is not proof. Build a timeline from the Windows Security detection name, the affected path, the download source, and the time the installer ran. A file inside the game’s installer directory supports a connection; a detection in an unrelated location may indicate an older or separate problem. Multiple detections can also be components of one installer rather than multiple independent infections.
Do not open a suspicious file to “test” it. If exact attribution matters, provide the recorded details to a professional or the publisher’s official support channel. Avoid uploading a potentially sensitive executable or save file to an unknown online scanner without understanding the privacy and terms involved.
Best Value
Prevent another malicious game download
Use trustworthy distribution channels
Prefer the game’s publisher’s official site or a major, reputable store. Avoid unfamiliar free-download pages, pirated copies, cracks, key generators, and peer-to-peer packages. A page that bundles an installer with an unfamiliar launcher or demands that you disable protection is a strong reason to stop.
Keep the protection layers enabled
- Install Windows updates and browser updates promptly.
- Keep Microsoft Defender security intelligence current.
- Leave potentially unwanted app blocking enabled for both apps and downloads. Microsoft notes that a PUA is not removed until the user selects an action in Windows Security.
- Keep SmartScreen enabled; it helps block malicious sites, applications, and downloads.
- Use a standard Windows user account for everyday activity when practical, so an installer cannot automatically make every system change with administrator rights.
Inspect before running
Check the publisher name, file extension, download source, and requested permissions. An installer that is unexpectedly compressed, password-protected, or accompanied by instructions to disable antivirus deserves extra scrutiny. Never treat a familiar game title or logo as proof that the file is genuine.
A concise recovery checklist
- Stop launching the game or installer.
- Stop sensitive logins on the possibly infected PC.
- Record the detection name, path, source, and time.
- Uninstall the game and unrecognized companion programs through Windows Settings.
- Delete the installer only after quarantine or after evidence is no longer needed.
- Update Windows Security security intelligence.
- Run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan.
- Allow quarantine or removal and restart if requested.
- Run Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) if the detection returns or cleanup fails.
- From a clean device, change potentially exposed passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
- Escalate to the manufacturer or a trusted professional if the PC remains unstable or the results are unclear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is uninstalling a suspicious game enough?
No. Uninstalling removes the registered application, but an installer may have left other files. Run a Microsoft Defender Full scan afterward, and use Defender Offline if detections return or cleanup fails.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I delete a quarantined game file immediately?
Keep the detection details and file path first. Delete the installer or archive after Windows Security has quarantined it and you no longer need it as evidence; never restore or whitelist it to make the game run.
Can I change passwords on the computer that may be infected?
Use a different clean device. Change reused passwords, make each replacement unique, enable two-factor authentication, and review account activity.
When should I reset or reinstall Windows?
Consider it only when scans and expert cleanup cannot establish control, and only after a current backup and appropriate professional guidance. Persistent detections, disabled security tools, or unexplained instability warrant escalation first.
