Follow the instructions for the exact product. For a 3M COMPLY privacy filter, 3M says to pull it slowly from its notch; if the protector resists or its attachment is unclear, stop rather than forcing it.
Identify the protector before removing it
Check the packaging, product label, order history, or manufacturer’s support page for its brand and model. “Screen protector” can mean several different things:

- Removable privacy filter: A separate panel that may attach with tabs, strips, or another maker-specific system.
- Adhesive film: A thin covering attached across the display.
- Glass protector: A rigid cover that may also be attached with adhesive.
Do not assume a filter’s removal instructions apply to a bonded film or glass protector. The product’s maker is the best source for its specific removal method and whether it is designed to be reused. A removable privacy filter, for example, is a different product type from bonded film; Digital Camera World’s September 28, 2026 coverage of Belkin TruePrivacy describes that filter as removable and reusable, but does not establish a method for removing bonded protectors.
Remove a 3M COMPLY privacy filter using its instructions
For 3M COMPLY systems specifically, 3M’s US installation and care instructions say to grip the filter at its notch and slowly pull it toward you to remove it from the display. This direction applies to the COMPLY filter, not to an unidentified adhesive film or glass protector.

For some COMPLY systems, 3M says that to permanently remove or replace an attachment strip, you can use a fingernail to peel back the strip’s edge and then roll up the adhesive. Removing the filter and removing or replacing its attachment strips are separate tasks; check that the instructions match your attachment system. See 3M’s COMPLY installation and care instructions.
If the protector resists, stop
There is no established universal procedure for an unidentified MacBook protector. If it does not release with the method specified for that exact product, stop and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider for model-specific guidance. Do not increase force or improvise with a blade, another sharp tool, heat, or solvent beneath the protector; the available product guidance does not establish those as safe ways to remove an unknown covering.

Clean the MacBook screen after removal
- Shut down the MacBook and unplug its power adapter.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water only to clean the screen, following Apple’s Mac cleaning guidance.
- For stubborn smudges or fingerprints, Apple says a cloth moistened with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol solution may be used gently on the Mac laptop display or enclosure. This is guidance for cleaning smudges or fingerprints, not for releasing a protector or removing adhesive.
Apple’s guidance is for cleaning the exposed MacBook screen; it does not give a universal procedure for removing screen protectors. Do not treat permission to clean smudges with the alcohol solution as permission to apply alcohol or adhesive remover beneath a protector.
