Before you start: prepare the Photoshop document

Use a copy of the original layer

Check the subject and background relationship

• Simple, high-contrast portraits and products usually need only light mask cleanup.
• Hair, fur, translucent fabric, glass, smoke, cables, and similarly detailed edges require inspection at high zoom.
• Subjects that closely match the background color are more likely to lose fine details or retain a halo.

Do not judge the edge only against Photoshop’s checkerboard transparency. A temporary solid-color layer beneath the cutout exposes light or dark halos that can disappear against the checkerboard but become obvious when the image is placed on a new design.

Method 1: Photoshop’s Remove Background Quick Action

1. Open the file and select the subject layer

1. Choose File > Open and load the image.
2. In the Layers panel, click the layer that contains the subject.
3. If the layer is locked as a Background layer, unlock or duplicate it so you retain an untouched original.

The Remove Background command acts on the selected layer. Running it while another layer is active can produce an unexpected result or appear to do nothing.

2. Run Remove Background

Open Photoshop’s Quick Actions or Discover area and choose Remove Background. Photoshop analyzes the image, isolates the prominent subject, and creates either transparency or a layer mask prepared for compositing and export.

Wait for the action to finish, then inspect the entire outline rather than assuming the first preview is publication-ready. Zoom into the face, shoulders, hands, product edges, and any area where the subject and background share similar tones.

3. Preserve the result as a mask

If Photoshop creates a mask, leave it attached to the duplicate layer. If the action produces transparency by deleting pixels, undo that change and recreate the cutout as a mask where possible. The mask is the editable version: painting black hides pixels, painting white restores them, and gray produces partial transparency.

4. Add a temporary contrast layer

1. Create a new fill or solid-color layer beneath the cutout.
2. Choose a color that contrasts strongly with the subject and any expected final background.
3. Inspect the edge for fringes, holes, and bits of the old background.

This contrast layer is a quality-control aid, not part of the final image. Hide or delete it before export.

5. Correct obvious errors on the mask

• Select the layer mask thumbnail, not the image thumbnail.
• Paint with white to restore missing subject areas.
• Paint with black to hide background spill.
• Use a soft brush for gradual transitions and a harder brush for crisp product or architectural edges.
• Reduce brush opacity when the boundary needs a controlled, partial transition rather than a binary cut.

Work in short strokes and alternate between a close view for detail and a zoomed-out view for judging the overall silhouette. Keep the original layer hidden until the cutout is approved.

Method 2: Select Subject for a more controllable starting point

Select Subject uses Adobe Sensei machine learning to identify and select the prominent subject with one click. It is useful when you want to inspect the selection before committing to a mask, or when Photoshop’s Quick Action does not produce the type of layer structure you need.

1. Create the automatic selection

1. Activate the image layer containing the subject.
2. Choose Select > Subject or use the Select Subject action in Photoshop’s contextual controls.
3. Wait for the marching-ants selection to appear.

The selection is a starting boundary. It may omit wispy hair, open spaces between objects, transparent materials, or low-contrast portions of the subject.

2. Turn the selection into a mask

With the selection active, click the Add Layer Mask button in the Layers panel. Photoshop hides unselected pixels while preserving the original image beneath the mask. Save the document as a layered PSD if you expect another round of editing.

3. Refine in Select and Mask

Open Select > Select and Mask to examine the boundary against different preview modes. Use the Select and Mask brush to add missing subject areas and subtract background spill. Increase the zoom around hair, fur, veils, transparent objects, cables, fingers, and narrow gaps between adjacent parts.

When the edge is uncertain, prioritize the final background on which the cutout will appear. A boundary that looks acceptable on white may show a dark fringe on a saturated color, and the reverse can also happen. Check the mask against at least one light and one dark temporary background before exporting.

How to fix common edge problems

Hair and fur

Automatic selection often captures the dense interior of hair or fur more accurately than individual flyaway strands. Use the refinement brush around the outer edge rather than painting every strand manually. Restore genuinely missing hair with white on the mask, but remove background-colored halos with a small black brush. Avoid over-smoothing: a perfectly geometric edge is usually less believable than a controlled irregular one.

Low-contrast boundaries

When the subject and background have similar brightness or color, inspect the edge at high zoom and add the missing subject pixels manually. A strongly contrasting temporary layer makes the boundary easier to see. If the edge is soft in the original photograph, preserve that softness instead of forcing a hard selection.

Glass, veils, smoke, and other translucent details

Translucent areas may contain a mixture of subject and background pixels, so a simple opaque mask can make them look cut out. Use partial mask opacity or gray brush strokes where the original transparency is important. Compare the result against the intended replacement background; the correct amount of transparency depends on what will sit behind the subject.

Background-colored spill

Spill appears as a colored fringe just inside the subject outline. Paint black on the mask to remove obvious contamination, using a small brush and low opacity near soft edges. If the color is embedded in semi-transparent pixels, a subtle edge correction may be preferable to aggressively shrinking the mask, which can remove legitimate subject detail.

Holes inside the subject

Automatic tools can fill or remove openings between arms, handles, chair backs, and other parts of a subject. At high zoom, paint white on the mask to restore the intended interior area, then verify the shape at normal viewing size.

Export a transparent background correctly

Use PNG when transparency must remain

Choose PNG for a cutout that will be placed over another background. Before exporting, hide the temporary solid-color layer and confirm that the checkerboard appears where transparency is required. Use Photoshop’s export controls and keep the layer mask intact in the working file.

Keep the layered PSD

Save a PSD version whenever the image may need a different background, a revised edge, or another crop. The exported PNG is a delivery file; the PSD is the editable source. If a client later asks for a darker background or a different composition, a masked PSD avoids rebuilding the cutout.

When not to use a transparent PNG

If the image is already being composited inside Photoshop, keep the masked layer in the PSD until the rest of the design is approved. Exporting and re-importing a PNG can discard the mask’s editability and make later edge changes less convenient.

Faster AI alternatives when Photoshop is more than you need

Adobe Express

Adobe Express is designed for a quick remove-and-download workflow. Select the image, choose Remove Background, review the cutout, set Background to No fill, and download it as a transparent PNG.

Standalone remove.bg status

The official remove.bg FAQ says its functionality is migrating into Canva. Availability of the standalone service, plugins, API access, and any post-transition behavior can change, so verify the current status before building a production process around it. Do not assume that an older plugin or API workflow remains available simply because a previous tutorial shows it.
