What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start with the game’s own controller or accessibility settings. If they do not offer the change you need, use a platform-level tool where available. The right method depends on your device, controller model, and whether you want a change for one game or for the system more broadly.
Choose the right remapping method
Game settings are usually the best first stop: they can change controls for that game without affecting other titles. Platform tools can help when a game lacks the needed option, but their scope and supported controllers vary.

- One game on PC: Check the game’s controls first, then consider a Steam Input layout.
- Nintendo Switch or Switch 2: System Button Mapping works with supported controllers and can affect games as well as system menus.
- PlayStation: The documented custom assignment steps here apply to DualSense Edge and Access controller profiles, not every PlayStation controller.
- Xbox: Microsoft’s accessibility guidance explains what remapping can and cannot address, but the sources cited here do not establish a current consumer setup path for standard Xbox controllers.
Remap a controller on PC with Steam Input
Steam Input lets players configure controller bindings for individual games. Steam’s guide covers games using its native API, where developers can define action sets for different contexts, and games using legacy configurations, where players can edit a layout based on a template. See Steam’s Steam Input player guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Connect the controller and open Steam’s controller settings to confirm that Steam detects it.
- In your Library, select the game you want to configure and open its controller layout.
- Choose the control or action you want to change, then assign a different button or input.
- Save or apply the layout if prompted, then test it in the game.
Some games have their own control settings as well. Check the game’s options if you need to change an in-game action, on-screen prompts, or a setting Steam’s layout does not expose.

If Steam detects the wrong controller
An external remapping program can make Steam detect an emulated Xbox 360 controller instead of the physical PlayStation controller. If Steam shows a different device than the one connected, check whether another remapper is active before changing additional bindings. Steam’s player guide describes this interaction.
Remap buttons on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo’s supported hardware and instructions differ by console generation. On Switch 2, the documented route is System Settings > Accessibility > Button Mapping. The console’s on-screen controller list is the best way to check which connected device it supports.

Nintendo lists Joy-Con 2, Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as supported in its Switch 2 button-mapping instructions. For Switch 2 Pro Controller GL/GR buttons and Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip GL/GR buttons, Nintendo says to configure them from Quick Settings while playing a game.

Original Switch and Switch Lite
Nintendo’s original Switch guidance identifies Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for remapping; it also says Switch Lite buttons can be remapped. Check the controller choices shown on your own console, since support depends on the hardware. See Nintendo’s original Switch button-mapping instructions.

Nintendo says most buttons can be reassigned, but POWER, Volume, HOME, and SYNC functions have restrictions. A custom configuration is saved on the console, not on the controller, so it will not travel with that controller to another console. Each controller must be configured separately, and up to five custom configurations can be saved per supported controller. The mapping applies in nearly all console situations, including games and system menus, with exceptions such as button testing and calibration. Nintendo’s Button Mapping FAQ also covers presets and resetting a configuration.
Remap a PlayStation controller
PlayStation’s detailed assignment instructions apply to the DualSense Edge and Access controller. They should not be read as a universal menu path for every standard DualSense setup. The same support page says DualSense Edge settings can also be customized using PlayStation Accessories on Windows. See PlayStation’s controller customization guidance.

Xbox: what remapping can and cannot do
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 107 explains why changing button assignments may not remove every control barrier: a game can still require long holds, simultaneous inputs, or rapid sequences. Microsoft notes that some players use inputs mounted near body parts that take longer to move, and that input timing can therefore matter. Its guideline recommends considering other accommodations, such as game-speed controls, when remapping does not address the difficulty. Read Xbox Accessibility Guideline 107.
The cited guidance is for accessibility design; it does not provide a verified, current consumer menu sequence for remapping standard Xbox controller buttons on a console or Windows PC. For exact steps, consult current Xbox Accessories or Xbox support documentation for your controller and device rather than relying on an unverified path.
Quick Recap
Before you change a layout
- Check the scope: Determine whether the change affects one game, a system-wide setting, or a controller profile.
- Know where it is saved: Steam layouts are associated with games; Nintendo says mappings are saved on the console; the cited PlayStation procedures use profiles for DualSense Edge and Access controllers.
- Confirm hardware support: Remapping is not available for every controller or every button. Use the platform’s supported-controller list for your exact console and controller generation.
- Keep a route back: Note the original assignments or save a profile before editing. Change a few inputs at a time, test in a safe menu or practice area, and learn how to restore defaults.
- Check prompts separately: Remapping changes what an input does; it may not change button labels in game instructions or make a complicated sequence easier.
