1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a valid five-letter word with five distinct, common letters and a useful mix of vowels and consonants. That gives your first guess a good chance to test several plausible letters at once—but no single opener is best for every player or every ranking method.
What makes a strong Wordle opener?
Your first guess is valuable because Wordle’s green, yellow and gray tiles narrow the possible answer. A word that tests five different letters can reveal more than one that repeats a letter, while familiar letters are generally more useful to test than rare ones.

- Use distinct letters. Each letter in a five-letter opener tests a different possibility.
- Favor common letters. A starter made up mostly of uncommon letters is less likely to help narrow ordinary answer candidates.
- Include a useful vowel mix. Vowels can quickly clarify the shape of a word, but there is no fixed vowel count that guarantees a good result.
- Pick a word you can remember. A repeatable opener is easier to use consistently; you can still adapt your next guess to the tiles.
These are practical heuristics, not a guarantee of solving in a particular number of turns. The best choice depends on what you want the opener to do: reveal information, or give you a chance to guess the answer immediately.

Why “best starting word” rankings disagree
A ranking can reward different things: reducing the number of possible answers, or having a chance that the first guess is the answer itself. It can also use different answer lists, accepted-guess lists, dates and scoring methods. Compare rankings only when those inputs and goals match.
#1 Best Overall
The New York Times has explained that WordleBot’s recommendations depend on its algorithm and the word list it uses. After an August 2022 update, WordleBot no longer knew the solution list, according to the New York Times account of consistent starting words and WordleBot. That history is a reason to treat a recommendation as conditional on its method, not as a timeless official verdict.
One third-party example shows why the test context matters: NYT Game Solver reports about 47.6 remaining candidates on average for IRATE in a test against 1,810 past answers. That figure is the site’s result for that corpus and method, not an official New York Times statistic or a promise about current daily Wordle. See its starting-word ranking and methodology.

How to use your first guess to choose the second
- Read each tile. Green means the letter is correct and in the right position; yellow means it is in the answer but in another position; gray means it is not part of the answer, subject to Wordle’s handling of repeated letters.
- Keep greens fixed. In your next guess, leave each green letter in its confirmed position.
- Move yellows. Reuse each confirmed yellow letter in a different position; do not put it back where it appeared.
- Use the remaining slots to test useful new letters. Prefer common letters not yet ruled out, while respecting all the feedback.
- Update your candidate set after every guess. A later guess should satisfy every clue already shown, rather than simply repeat a favorite opener.
How to choose your own repeatable opener
Start with a valid five-letter word that has no repeated letters, leans toward common letters and includes a useful vowel-consonant mix. If you are comparing candidate openers, ask what each ranking actually measures: remaining candidates, a solver’s score, or the chance of an immediate hit. Check which answer pool and guess list it used before treating a result as relevant to your play.

Hasbro’s Wordle: The Party Game is a physical adaptation for 2–4 players aged 14 and up, with dry-erase boards and markers. It is designed for social play; it does not provide an advantage in choosing a starting word for the digital daily game.
