For a Virtualmin installation, start with a fresh, supported operating-system image, keep it free of extra server packages, then use Virtualmin’s current automated installer. Back up anything you need before reimaging: replacing a server image can erase the existing system. This guide treats “WebAdmin” as the Virtualmin/Webmin stack; Virtualmin runs on top of Webmin, and its installation guidance covers this fresh-server setup.

Before you reimage: protect the data you need

Reimaging is potentially destructive. Before replacing the operating system, preserve any required files, configuration, database dumps, mail, keys and DNS settings. Check your hosting provider’s own documentation for how its reinstall process handles attached disks and snapshots; that behavior varies by provider.

Virtualmin recommends a fresh Grade A supported operating system for the automated installation. Its FAQ advises backing up all data if you attempt an installation on an active server: prior system changes affect the outcome, and the installer may remove packages to meet its dependencies. For some existing-server situations, the FAQ suggests setting up the repository instead of performing a full install. A configured production server is not a routine, risk-free substitute for a fresh image. Virtualmin’s installation FAQ explains these distinctions.

Choose a supported operating system and architecture

Virtualmin’s support matrix, dated January 21, 2026, lists these Grade A releases for automated installation and a maintained software repository:

AlmaLinux 8, 9 and 10
Rocky Linux 8, 9 and 10
Debian 12 and 13
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS

Architecture support differs across OS families. Check the current Virtualmin OS support matrix for the exact release and architecture before choosing an image; do not assume an unlisted version or a beta release is supported. Virtualmin notes that Webmin itself runs on almost every UNIX-like OS, but that does not mean Virtualmin’s automated installation is equally supported on all of them. The matrix distinguishes Grade A from Grade B systems, some of which receive little or no direct testing.

If several supported images fit, choose the latest supported release you are comfortable administering. Virtualmin does not designate one listed distribution as universally best.

Check capacity, domain DNS and image cleanliness

Size the server for the planned workload

Virtualmin’s automated-install guide recommends at least 1 GiB of RAM and 1 GiB of free disk space, with additional capacity for domains and mail. For a full installation with mail, spam filtering and virus scanning, its recommendation is 4 GiB of RAM or more. These are vendor recommendations, not a performance guarantee for every workload. See the automated installation guide for its current prerequisites.

Point the domain to the server

The guide also calls for a domain whose DNS records point to the server’s IP address. Arrange the relevant DNS before installation, and verify that the records resolve to the intended server.

Keep the base image clean

Do not pre-install or modify extra packages before running the installer unless Virtualmin’s instructions require it. Virtualmin warns that package changes can cause conflicts. Add third-party repositories only after Virtualmin is installed, and do so carefully. The official installation documentation explains the recommended preparation.

Install Virtualmin on the fresh server

  1. Provision the server with a fresh supported OS. Select a Grade A release and architecture from Virtualmin’s current support matrix.
  2. Confirm backups and prerequisites. Preserve required data, check the provider’s image-reinstall behavior, allow capacity for the planned services, and ensure the domain points to the server IP.
  3. Connect to the server over SSH. Follow the access and preparation requirements in Virtualmin’s installation documentation.
  4. Use the current automated-install command. Get the SSH invocation and available options from Virtualmin’s download page. Options cover choices such as LAMP or LEMP, minimal installation, database and edition. Check the live page rather than relying on an old command or flags copied from another guide.
  5. Allow the installation to finish and check its result. Use Virtualmin’s troubleshooting guidance if the process reports an error or appears stalled.

If installation fails or seems stuck

Virtualmin identifies third-party repositories, unsupported operating-system releases, network problems and package conflicts as common sources of installation trouble. Review the official troubleshooting guide and, if the installer appears stalled, inspect /root/virtualmin-install.log. Confirm that the server’s OS release and architecture are supported and that the base image was not altered with conflicting packages or repositories.
