GIO Classic Extras is a sum-insured home and contents policy with a notable building-cover feature: an eligible claim may receive a safety-net contribution of up to a further 25% of the home sum insured for one incident. That is a conditional maximum, not a cash bonus or a replacement for choosing a realistic sum insured. GIO offers separate home-owner, renters and strata-owner versions, so the cover depends on which policy you are considering.
What is GIO Classic Extras?
Classic Extras is one tier of GIO home insurance. For the homeowner version, you nominate a sum insured for the building and for contents. The policy is therefore not an agreement to pay any rebuilding or replacement cost regardless of the amount insured: the nominated sums and the policy’s terms matter.

CHOICE characterizes the homeowner policy as “A sum insured policy with a 25% underinsurance safety net for your building.” That summary captures the main point, but the safety net is subject to the policy conditions and exclusions.

GIO says Classic Extras automatically includes safety net home protection. For one incident, it can contribute up to a further 25% of the home sum insured when the claim is settled on the relevant basis and the policy conditions are met. The figure is a maximum additional contribution, not an automatic increase to every claim or a general payment to the policyholder. See GIO’s current home insurance information and policy documents for the operative terms.

Do not rely on the safety net to make an intentionally low building estimate adequate. Work out a realistic rebuilding sum insured and check how the policy defines the relevant settlement basis, what costs qualify, and which exclusions or limits apply.

Which Classic Extras version applies?
Homeowners
The homeowner version includes building and contents cover, with sums insured nominated for each. The building safety-net feature is relevant to this version. CHOICE also reports the legal-liability limit and selected accommodation and contents limits described above.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The renters review describes contents cover, optional listed valuables and portable contents, as well as legal liability up to $20 million. It also reports an additional excess if the home is unoccupied for more than 60 consecutive days. Those details should be checked against the renters PDS; do not assume renters receive the homeowner building safety net.
Strata owners
CHOICE has a separate review for strata owners. Strata insurance arrangements differ from standalone building cover, so confirm what the owners corporation or body corporate insures and what your individual policy is intended to cover. The homeowner safety-net description should not be transferred to this variant without checking its own wording.
Classic, Classic Extras and Platinum: safety-net distinction
GIO’s FAQ distinguishes the tiers for building cover: Classic Extras includes safety net home protection of up to a further 25% of the home sum insured, while Platinum’s stated maximum is up to 30%. For Classic, GIO describes the safety net as optional. These are conditional policy limits, not unconditional payouts; check the current FAQ and PDS for the terms that govern your policy.

How to assess whether it suits you
Do not judge the policy by the safety-net percentage alone. Compare it with alternatives using the same address, building and contents sums insured, and household details. Check:

Verdict
GIO Classic Extras is worth considering if its included features and conditional building safety net fit your needs. The safety net is a useful distinction, but it does not remove the need to set an adequate sum insured or check the limits, excesses and exclusions. Choose between the homeowner, renters and strata-owner versions based on what you need to insure, and make the decision from the relevant current PDS and a quote for your circumstances.
