IDEAL’s central idea is that VM placement must be reconsidered after every assignment: placing one VM changes the available host capacity, energy use, and link bandwidth that shape the next decision. The paper treats this as a virtual data center embedding (VDCE) problem, combining VM placement with virtual-link routing—not as a host-selection problem in isolation.
Why VM placement is a moving target
A VDCE request contains virtual machines and virtual links. A provider must assign the VMs to physical hosts and map the virtual links onto physical network paths with enough bandwidth. These are coupled decisions: a host assignment affects remaining compute capacity and energy, while link mappings consume network bandwidth. The paper characterizes this joint embedding problem as combinatorial and NP-hard.

After a VM is assigned, the physical network is no longer in the same state. A host may have less residual capacity, a previously idle host may become active, and a chosen route may leave less bandwidth on its links. Those changes can make a host that looked attractive earlier less suitable for the next VM. A static ranking made just once can therefore miss the consequences of earlier decisions.
How IDEAL re-evaluates candidate hosts
For the VM currently being embedded, IDEAL evaluates feasible hosts by estimating the impact of a tentative assignment in two ways:

- H700 w/ 512MB / DVD-ROM / 2x 870W PSU

- Marginal energy increment: the additional host-side energy associated with placing the VM on that host.
- Incremental load-balance distortion: how the assignment changes the distribution of residual resources across active hosts.
It combines these criteria through a lightweight Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) weighting step and ranks the candidate hosts with VIKOR. After a successful assignment, IDEAL updates host and link resources, then evaluates candidates again for the next VM. This repeated, state-aware ranking is the paper’s main contribution; AHP and VIKOR are components of the decision process rather than the central novelty.
How virtual links fit into the embedding
IDEAL does not stop at host placement. It maps virtual links using a bandwidth-aware k-shortest-path procedure, so the embedding must account for network resources as well as compute capacity. In practical terms, a placement that looks favorable from the host-energy perspective still has to be considered alongside whether the requested virtual-link bandwidth can be routed through the physical network.

What the paper reports—and the scope of those results
Preetham et al. report the following average outcomes against the evaluated baselines CEVNE, DROI, SCA-R, LitE, and First-Fit:

| Reported metric | Average result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Active-host energy consumption | 48.70% reduction | Reported by Preetham et al. (2026) for the paper’s evaluated spine-leaf topology and experimental scenarios. |
| Number of active hosts | 47.61% reduction | Reported by Preetham et al. (2026) for the paper’s evaluated spine-leaf topology and experimental scenarios. |
| Load-balancing efficiency | 75.72% improvement | Reported by Preetham et al. (2026) for the paper’s evaluated spine-leaf topology and experimental scenarios. |
These figures describe the paper’s experimental comparisons, not guaranteed results for other workloads, topologies, or production networks. The paper also notes that total physical-network energy falls less than active-host energy because idle hosts continue to draw baseline power. That distinction matters: reducing the energy used by active hosts does not eliminate the power cost of equipment left idle.

What the evaluation leaves open
The paper says it does not consider partial acceptance or dynamic reconfiguration mechanisms. Its results therefore address embedding decisions in the modeled physical network and workload scenarios; they do not establish performance in an operational deployment, behavior under every traffic pattern, or how the method responds to live reconfiguration.

How to read IDEAL’s contribution
The useful takeaway is not simply that the authors apply a ranking method to VM hosts. It is that placement decisions are evaluated incrementally against a changing network state, while accounting for energy, residual-resource balance, and virtual-link bandwidth mapping. When comparing this approach with another embedding method, the meaningful questions are whether it re-evaluates sequential assignments, includes link routing, and measures energy and balance under comparable topology, workloads, and baselines.
