How to Reduce Wireless Gaming Mouse Latency and Interference

Move your mouse receiver closer, separate it from USB 3 and nearby wireless devices, check power and pairing, then compare polling rates in your game.

To reduce wireless gaming mouse delays, stutter, or inconsistent tracking, first move the receiver close to the mouse and away from USB 3 equipment and nearby wireless devices. Then check the mouse’s power and connection, and compare lower polling rates if your game or PC struggles at the current setting. Change one thing at a time and test in your usual game; there is no universally best receiver position or polling rate.

1. Move the receiver closer and clear of obstructions

Plug the receiver into a front or otherwise unobstructed USB port near the mouse. Avoid hiding it behind the PC case or placing it alongside USB 3 cables, drives, or hubs. A standard USB extension cable can help you position the receiver closer to the mouse while keeping it away from USB 3 equipment; it is an optional repositioning aid, not a required upgrade. Logitech explains USB 3.0 interference with 2.4 GHz devices, and Razer recommends a standard USB extension cable for separating a receiver from USB 3.0 devices.

If you use Razer’s HyperPolling Wireless Dongle, Razer advises placing it in line of sight and within 30 cm of the mouse. That distance is specific to this product setup, not a general requirement for every wireless gaming mouse. Razer’s HyperPolling placement guidance describes the recommendation.

2. Check for nearby wireless interference

Temporarily disconnect other wireless devices and retest. Also try moving the mouse and receiver away from routers and other 2.4 GHz equipment. Logitech’s gaming-mouse troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 2 meters of separation from routers and other 2.4 GHz devices; treat this as a diagnostic step for its guidance, not a universal spacing rule. Logitech’s tracking troubleshooting page covers these checks.

Make one change at a time: first reposition the receiver, then test with nearby wireless devices disconnected. If performance improves after a particular change, restore other devices individually to identify what affects your setup.

3. Rule out power and connection problems

  • Recharge the mouse or replace its batteries.
  • Reconnect or re-pair the mouse and receiver using the instructions for your exact model.
  • Check the manufacturer’s current guidance for applicable mouse or receiver firmware and operating-system updates.
  • If the problem persists, test the mouse on another computer or in another location to help distinguish a local setup issue from a device issue.

These are manufacturer troubleshooting steps, not proof that a particular update or pairing procedure applies to every mouse. Logitech’s inconsistent tracking guidance includes power, connection, and environment checks.

4. Compare polling rates if the system stutters

Polling rate, also called report rate, is how often the mouse reports input to the computer. If your mouse software lets you change it, compare the current setting with lower options. Watch both cursor or aim consistency and in-game FPS; a setting that feels responsive on one PC or game may not suit another.

Logitech says some users may experience FPS drops above 1 kHz because the higher report rate adds USB traffic, and recommends trying a lower rate or another game. This is a possible system-performance trade-off, not a claim that every user will see a drop. Logitech’s report-rate guidance notes that “While a higher polling rate can result in smoother movement, the extra USB traffic may also impact system performance, leading to FPS drops.”

Use the same game, scene, and mouse movement when comparing settings. Consider response feel, tracking stability, FPS, battery use, and whether your game and PC handle the selected rate. Keep the setting that works reliably in your actual setup rather than assuming the highest available rate is best.

5. Make the test repeatable

  1. Note the current receiver position, wireless surroundings, polling rate, and any symptoms such as missed movement, stutter, or FPS drops.
  2. Move the receiver closer to the mouse and away from USB 3 equipment, then test the same game or task.
  3. Temporarily remove nearby wireless devices from the test, then compare results.
  4. Check power and reconnect or re-pair according to the mouse’s own instructions.
  5. If needed, lower the polling rate one step at a time and compare tracking and FPS.

Logitech lists up to 30 feet (10 meters) in ideal clear-line-of-sight conditions as an operating-distance figure for its receiver guidance, but that is not a recommended gaming distance. Troubleshooting advice instead favors bringing the receiver closer and reducing interference. Logitech’s receiver-distance guidance gives the ideal-condition context.
