How to Vote in Person After Requesting a Michigan Absentee Ballot

Yes. In Michigan, requesting an absentee ballot does not prevent you from voting in person, as long as you have not already returned it. You can surrender the unreturned ballot and vote with a new one, or—in places that offer the service—bring your completed absentee ballot to an in-person site for tabulation.

First, check whether you returned your absentee ballot

The deciding factor is whether the ballot was submitted, not simply whether you requested or received it. If you have already returned it, Michigan says you cannot vote again in person. A ballot already inserted into a tabulator cannot be changed.

Check your ballot status and election details through Michigan.gov/Vote. If you are unsure whether your ballot was submitted, contact your city or township clerk before trying to vote in person.

Choose how you want to vote in person

Option What to do Result Important limit
Surrender the absentee ballot Bring the ballot to an early voting site or your assigned Election Day polling place and give it to election staff. You receive a new ballot to complete in person. Confirm the correct site and hours for your election.
Submit the completed absentee ballot Bring it to an early voting site or Election Day location that accepts ballots for tabulation. Your absentee ballot is submitted for tabulation there. Detroit voters cannot use a Detroit polling place for this on Election Day; use a drop box or the local clerk’s office.

Path 1: Surrender the ballot and vote on a new one

If you want to vote in person instead of using your absentee ballot, take that ballot with you and surrender it to election staff. At an early voting site, staff issue a new ballot for you to complete there. On Election Day, election inspectors at your assigned polling place can accept the surrender and issue a new ballot.

Michigan’s Bureau of Elections also describes surrendering a received absentee ballot to the clerk before Election Day, or to election inspectors at the polling place on Election Day, to vote a new ballot.

Path 2: Bring your completed absentee ballot for tabulation

If you have already filled out the absentee ballot and want to submit that ballot rather than receive a new one, take it to an early voting site or an Election Day location where in-person ballot tabulation is available. Availability depends on the location. Detroit voters cannot submit a completed absentee ballot for tabulation at a Detroit polling place on Election Day; they can return it to a drop box or their local clerk’s office instead.

Find your site and check the hours

  1. Go to Michigan.gov/Vote.
  2. Look up your early voting location or assigned Election Day polling place using the voter information portal.
  3. Check the dates and hours shown for your jurisdiction and election; early voting locations and schedules vary.

Michigan Election Day polling places are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Early voting dates and hours depend on the election and your jurisdiction. Beginning in 2026, communities may provide early voting on the Monday before Election Day; check the voter portal for the schedule that applies to you.

Bring photo ID if available

Bring an acceptable photo ID if you have one. If you do not have one or forgot it, Michigan allows you to vote after signing an Affidavit of Voter Not in Possession of Picture Identification.

What to expect from ballot tracking

If you submit an absentee ballot at an early voting or Election Day location, Michigan.gov/Vote tracking may not show it as received, and you may not get an alert. That tracking limitation does not by itself mean the ballot was not submitted.
