For ordinary thermal paste, use gentle cleaning with isopropyl alcohol instead of metal polish. If your goal is to change the plate’s flatness, that is lapping—not cosmetic polishing—and it removes metal.
Choose the product by the residue or job

For gallium-based liquid-metal residue
Thermal Grizzly TG Metal Polish & Restore (TG-MPR-01) is the clearest product match for this specific job. Thermal Grizzly describes it as optimized for gallium residue and suitable for copper, brass, chrome, and nickel surfaces in PC hardware; it also lists CPU dies and heatspreaders among its uses. The manufacturer says the paste combines controlled abrasiveness with surfactant technology intended to bind gallium and keep it from re-adhering as it is cleaned away.

The set includes a polishing pen and lint-free cloths. Follow the maker’s directions, and clean the surface again until no polish residue remains before applying liquid metal; Thermal Grizzly gives its cleaning wipes or isopropyl alcohol as examples. The product description supports its intended use, but does not establish that every cooler maker endorses it, that it is necessary for routine repasting, or that it will lower temperatures.

Intel’s TIM application and removal guidance, last reviewed January 30, 2025, calls for a delicate anti-static task wiper moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Wipe gently, let the alcohol dry, and apply fresh TIM when reinstalling the processor or heatsink. Do not put new TIM on top of old material.

Arctic Silver describes ArctiClean as a two-step product for removing thermal grease or pads and preparing copper or aluminum surfaces. It is a cleaner and surface purifier, not evidence for a polishing or flattening compound.
General metal polishes and abrasive pastes are not interchangeable with CPU guidance
Kemet says its Sabre aluminium oxide abrasive paste is suitable for lapping and polishing and particularly effective at smoothing soft metals, including copper. Kemet also describes Simichrome as a general polish for uncoated copper and other metals that leaves a protective film. Those descriptions are not CPU cold-plate instructions or tests. Before reassembly, any remaining film or abrasive residue must be removed appropriately; follow the product’s own instructions.

Copper compatibility answers only whether a material is compatible with copper in the stated context. It does not establish that the compound is appropriate for a computer cooler, that it is safe to leave residue in place, or that it improves thermal contact.
Lapping changes the surface; a mirror finish does not prove a better fit
Polishing for appearance and lapping for geometry are different tasks. Lapping removes material and can change a cold plate’s flatness. PACE Technologies’ copper and copper alloys preparation guidance describes staged abrasives and specialized final-polish paths for metallographic specimens. It is laboratory sample preparation, not a procedure to copy wholesale onto a computer cooler; its pressures, chemistry, and steps are not established here as suitable for a CPU cold plate.

FrostyTech’s 1999 CPU lapping article reported measurements and a temperature improvement from its own historical Celeron test and grinding method. Those results belong to that old experiment, not modern processors or cold plates, and are not a basis for predicting a temperature change today.

The sources here do not provide a current, independently published head-to-head comparison of polishing compounds on CPU cold plates. That means there is no supported basis for naming a compound the universal winner or promising a particular temperature reduction. Choose by the actual task: routine TIM removal, manufacturer-described gallium-residue removal, cosmetic polishing, or deliberate lapping. A shinier surface alone does not show that contact or cooling has improved.
