For most Apple TV owners, the best setup is both: keep the physical Siri Remote as the everyday controller and use the iPhone or iPad Apple TV Remote in Control Center as a backup. The phone is especially handy for entering text, using Siri, or finding a misplaced newer remote; the physical remote is easier if you want tactile controls without picking up your phone.
What each remote does best
| Consideration | iPhone or iPad Remote in Control Center | Physical Siri Remote |
|---|---|---|
| Ready access | Convenient when your phone or iPad is already nearby; setup and network conditions can matter. | A dedicated controller that can stay by the viewing area. |
| Navigation | Uses an on-screen touch area and buttons; swipe to navigate and tap to select. | Uses physical buttons and a clickpad or touch surface, depending on generation. |
| Text and voice | Supports text entry, dictation and Siri, subject to device, language and regional availability. | Supports Siri and dictation where available. |
| Volume | iPhone or iPad volume buttons work only with supported audio setups; otherwise use the TV remote. | Volume-button support also depends on the audio setup. |
| Lost remote | Can control Apple TV while you look for the physical remote and, with compatible software, help locate a second-generation-or-later remote. | Second-generation-and-later models can be located using a compatible iPhone and Apple TV. |
| Cost and compatibility | No separate remote purchase if you already have a supported iPhone or iPad. | A replacement purchase; check generation, Apple TV software compatibility and charging connector. |
Can an iPhone replace the Siri Remote?
For basic control, often yes. Apple’s Control Center remote supports navigation, selection, playback controls, text entry and dictation, Siri, app switching, and other Apple TV actions. It works with Apple TV HD or later and AirPlay-compatible smart TVs. Apple Watch also has a more limited remote interface, including navigation and playback controls.

The phone is not a perfect substitute for everyone: it has no dedicated tactile buttons, and you need to unlock or pick up another device to use it. Keeping the physical remote nearby while treating the phone as a backup avoids that trade-off.

How to set up Apple TV Remote in Control Center
- Check that your iPhone or iPad supports the Apple TV Remote feature, and that it and the Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Control Center and tap the Remote control. If it is not there, use Control Center’s Add Controls flow to add it. On older iOS versions, go to Settings > Control Centre.
- Select your Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible smart TV from the device list. For an AirPlay smart TV, Apple says to add the TV to the Home app and assign it to a room.
- Enter the passcode shown on the TV if prompted.
If the Apple TV does not appear or setup fails, check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. Apple documents setup and compatibility in its Apple TV Remote setup guide.

How navigation, Siri and volume differ
Navigation and playback
On iPhone or iPad, swipe in the touch area to move around and tap to select. The remote also offers Back and Home actions, playback controls, ten-second skip controls, and access to app switching and Control Center. The physical remote’s clickpad, touch surface and button layout vary by generation; Apple’s remote guide describes the controls and their differences.
Text entry and Siri
The phone remote is useful when searching or entering account details because you can type or dictate on the phone. Siri availability depends on the supported language and region, not just the remote. Apple calls the hardware “Siri Remote” in countries or regions that support Siri and “Apple TV Remote” elsewhere. Check Apple’s remote identification and compatibility page and its remote-use guidance for region and control details.

Volume
Do not assume the iPhone’s side buttons will control TV volume. Apple specifies that Control Center volume buttons work with Apple TV paired with HomePod, a soundbar or other AirPlay-compatible speakers; with other setups, use the TV’s own remote. Physical remote volume buttons can also depend on the audio configuration. Apple’s setup instructions explain the Control Center limitation.

Find a lost remote—or troubleshoot one that stopped working
Use an iPhone to find a newer remote
Apple’s Find feature works with second-generation-or-later remotes when the iPhone has iOS 17 or later and Apple TV has tvOS 17 or later. Open the Apple TV Remote in Control Center, select the device list, tap Find, and follow the on-screen proximity indicator. Apple describes the requirements and steps in its lost-remote guide. If you cannot find or use the physical remote, the Control Center remote can serve as a temporary controller.
Try pairing, restarting and charging before replacing it
- Follow Apple’s pairing steps for your remote and Apple TV.
- Restart the remote and check its Bluetooth signal strength if that option is available.
- On tvOS 18 or later, check Bluetooth RSSI in the setting Apple specifies. If the signal is weak, move within about 20 feet (6 metres) of Apple TV.
- Charge the remote for 30 minutes, then test it again.
Apple provides model-specific instructions in its lost-remote guide and remote troubleshooting guidance. If these steps do not help, check Apple’s replacement options for Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.
Quick Recap
Which one should you use?
- Choose the Control Center remote when you want a no-purchase backup, easier phone-based text entry, or a way to control Apple TV while searching for a newer lost remote.
- Choose a physical remote for everyday use if tactile buttons and a dedicated controller matter more than phone-based convenience. Verify the generation and connector before buying.
- Use both if you want the reliable feel of a dedicated controller without giving up the phone’s backup and search features.
