How to Reduce Streaming Data Use on Your TV, Phone or Tablet

Use app playback settings to stream at lower quality, and use phone or tablet data controls when you need to protect a cellular or metered connection.

To use less data while streaming, lower playback quality in the streaming app first. On a phone or cellular iPad, you can also restrict an app to Wi-Fi or enable Apple’s Low Data Mode, which can limit background activity as well as streaming quality. These controls work differently, and lower video quality means a less-detailed picture.

Start with the connection you need to protect

If your allowance is limited, treat both cellular data and metered Wi-Fi as connections to manage: Wi-Fi is not necessarily unlimited, and app quality settings can reduce use on either type of connection. If you have a mobile-data concern, first check which app is using cellular data rather than changing every setting at once. Apple provides per-app usage reports and cellular access controls; for current billing details, check with your carrier.

Reduce quality in the streaming app

App playback settings are the most direct way to reduce the data used by video. Exact options depend on the service, device and software version. Automatic quality can adjust to connection conditions, so a manual lower setting may be more predictable, but it trades picture detail for data use.

Netflix

Netflix publishes approximate usage estimates for its own service. The figures below are not guaranteed limits: actual use varies by device and network.

Netflix setting Netflix estimate What to know
Low Up to 0.3 GB per hour Basic quality.
Medium Up to 0.7 GB per hour Standard quality.
High Up to 1 GB per hour for SD; 3 GB for HD; 7 GB for 4K Higher quality can use substantially more data.
Automatic About 4 hours per GB Netflix says quality adapts to connection speed.
Save Data About 6 hours per GB A mobile data-use option.
Maximum Data 1 GB per 20 minutes or more Netflix says use depends on device and network.

Netflix’s help page does not state a publication year for these estimates. They are Netflix-specific guidance, not a rate to apply to other services.

Set Netflix data use for a profile

  1. In a browser: open your Netflix account, go to Profiles, select the profile, open Playback settings, then choose the data-use setting.
  2. In the mobile app: open My Netflix, select the profile, go to App Settings, then Cellular Data Usage.

The profile’s Playback setting also constrains mobile playback. Netflix notes that pending downloads or the Automatic setting may prevent you from changing the mobile choice. On a TV, do not assume the phone’s cellular setting applies; Netflix says quality adapts to connection speed, and controls can vary by platform. Netflix also notes that higher video quality may use more energy. See Netflix’s video quality guidance and Netflix’s data-use settings.

YouTube

On a TV, open the player’s Settings, choose Quality, and select a preferred option. On Android or iPhone/iPad, open the video player’s Settings and choose Quality, then Data saver or another available option. To set mobile defaults, open YouTube settings and choose Video quality preferences; select preferences for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube’s Data saver option lowers picture quality and may make videos start faster. Higher picture quality uses more data and can start more slowly or buffer more. You can also select a manual resolution where Advanced options are available, but not every video offers them.

YouTube may adjust quality automatically based on connection speed, screen or player size, the quality of the original upload, and browser support. Higher quality often matters more on a large screen. Some formats may not be available on devices that do not support the relevant video-compression technology. See YouTube’s instructions for changing video quality and its quality-setting guidance for TVs.

Apple TV app on Windows

In the Windows Apple TV app, Playback settings include Streaming quality. Data Saver streams the best available quality at the lowest file size; High Quality can stream up to 4K. Download options are separate: Most Compatible SD (480p), Most Compatible HD (1080p), Fast Downloads for the smallest possible file, and High Quality up to 1080p. These are Windows-app controls, not universal Apple TV menus. Apple notes that features and content vary by country or region. Details are in Apple’s Windows Apple TV playback settings.

Use phone or tablet controls for cellular data

Turn off cellular access for a specific app

On an iPhone or cellular iPad, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and switch off cellular access for the streaming app. That app will then use Wi-Fi only. The same settings area reports cellular use by app, which can help identify where data is going. Menu names may vary by system version or connection type. Apple’s instructions are at View or change cellular data settings on iPhone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable Low Data Mode on Apple devices

Apple’s Low Data Mode can reduce streaming quality, stop some network use while apps are inactive, turn off Background App Refresh, disable automatic downloads and backups, and pause some updates. Its effects vary by app. You can configure it separately for cellular and Wi-Fi, so choose the network whose allowance you need to protect.

SIMO Solis Hero, 4G Mobile Hotspot, 1GB/Monthly + 30GB Global Data
  • 2-in-1 Solution: The SIMO Hero features a powerful hotspot device along with an 5250mAH powerbank built-in. Note: For best results please use the charging cable included.
  • Optimized to Share WiFi: Confidently connect up to 10 devices simultaneously.
  • SignalScan AI: Easily find the strongest signal across multiple mobile carriers – No SIM and No Locked-In Contracts Needed.
  • Global Coverage: SIMO delivers WiFi in 140 countries with 300+ carriers worldwide.
  • Two Data Packs Included: Each SIMO device comes bundled with 1GB of Free Data every month, forever (12GB Yearly) along with a one-time 30GB pack of Global Data (30GBs expires in 30 days)

For cellular, look under Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode. The precise labels vary with connection type and system version. Apple explains the feature and paths at Use Low Data Mode on your iPhone and iPad.

Choose a setting that fits the screen and connection

  • Large TV or tablet: lower quality only as far as you find acceptable; reduced detail is more noticeable on a larger display.
  • Weak or inconsistent connection: a lower setting may reduce buffering or help playback start, though performance still depends on the connection and service.
  • Metered Wi-Fi: lower quality in the app just as you would on cellular; a Wi-Fi connection is not automatically unlimited.
  • Cellular allowance is the issue: use the app’s cellular setting, Apple’s Low Data Mode, or a per-app cellular block according to whether you want to reduce use or prevent it entirely.

Similar labels across services do not promise identical results: an app-level data saver targets playback, while a system mode can also affect background activity and automatic downloads.

Check usage and billing with your carrier

Apple says the current-period usage figures from your carrier are the most accurate source for carrier data consumption and billing. For network-service or billing questions, contact the wireless provider. See Apple’s cellular data guidance.
