Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose DNS-Collector when you need a focused pipeline to collect, shape, enrich, and route DNS telemetry. Choose Zeek when DNS is one part of a wider network investigation and you can give a sensor visibility into the traffic you want to analyze. They overlap, but their documented roles are different; the available official sources do not establish a performance winner.
How DNS-Collector and Zeek differ
| Decision | DNS-Collector | Zeek |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | DNS telemetry collection and processing pipeline. | Broader network traffic analysis and network security monitoring platform. |
| Documented inputs | DNStap streams and live packet capture; the project also lists DNS-server sources such as BIND, PowerDNS, and Unbound. | Traffic visible to a live network sensor, or saved packet captures processed by Zeek. |
| Typical output or analysis | Filtering, normalization, enrichment, and routing DNS events to other systems. | Protocol analysis and transaction logs, with scripting and extension for custom analysis. |
| Key deployment question | Can your DNS servers or packet sources provide a documented input, and where should processed events go? | Can a sensor see the relevant traffic, and do you have an appropriate tap, mirrored switch port, or capture source? |
| Best fit | DNS-specific telemetry pipelines and integration with an existing analytics or security stack. | DNS investigation alongside logs from other protocols and programmable network analysis. |
This comparison describes the projects’ documented scope, not tested feature-by-feature parity. See the DNS-Collector project README and Zeek’s about page and DNS log documentation.

When DNS-Collector is the better fit
DNS-Collector is aimed at handling DNS telemetry as a pipeline. Its README documents collecting queries and responses through DNStap or live capture, filtering and normalizing events, adding enrichment such as GeoIP/ASN or metadata, and dispatching data to destinations including Kafka, Loki, Elasticsearch, Syslog, Prometheus, and ClickHouse. Those are documented capabilities, not an independent validation of performance or suitability for every deployment.
It is the more direct option to evaluate if you want DNS server telemetry delivered into an existing SIEM, data platform, or monitoring stack. In particular, its documented DNStap support addresses server-side DNS event collection; do not assume a Zeek network sensor is a drop-in DNS server log shipper.

When Zeek is the better fit
Zeek makes sense when you want DNS transactions in the context of broader network traffic analysis. Its DNS log can record the requester, resolver, query name and type, response code, answers, and round-trip time when those details are visible. Zeek can correlate DNS and connection records through a shared UID, which can help investigators connect a lookup with subsequent network activity.
Zeek’s project describes it as a platform for network traffic analysis, with a particular focus on semantic security monitoring at scale. Its value here is not simply another way to emit DNS logs: it is the ability to analyze DNS alongside other observed protocols and customize analysis.

Plan Zeek’s traffic visibility before deployment
Zeek can analyze only the traffic available to its sensor or capture input. The Zeek monitoring guide describes feeding a sensor from a network tap or a managed switch’s SPAN (port-mirroring) port. In small-office or test settings, a managed switch with port mirroring may provide a practical sensor feed; professional deployments often prefer a high-quality powered tap where possible. The right setup depends on network topology and traffic rate, so verify that a specific switch supports the mirror configuration and throughput you need. A new switch is not a requirement for every Zeek user.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In home and small-office networks, NAT and the lack of a suitable monitoring point can make it difficult to tell which internal device generated traffic. Confirm where traffic is visible and what identity information survives that point before treating Zeek logs as a complete view of individual clients.

Account for encrypted DNS
Network-derived DNS visibility is not guaranteed for encrypted resolution. Zeek’s DNS log documentation describes capturing application-level DNS activity on the assumption that the traffic is not encrypted, and names DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT) as examples. If clients use encrypted DNS paths that the sensor cannot inspect, those lookups may not appear as ordinary DNS transactions in Zeek’s DNS log. Check client configuration and collection points rather than assuming either tool sees every query.
Getting DNS data into a SIEM or analytics stack
Start with the source and the destination, not the product name. If the DNS servers can provide DNStap and your requirement is to filter, enrich, and route their events, assess DNS-Collector’s documented pipeline and the destination integrations you actually use. If the requirement is to investigate DNS with connection and other protocol activity, determine whether a Zeek sensor can receive the needed traffic and how its logs will reach your downstream system.

- Portable 100M/1G Network TAP Appliance for remote capture of data traffic
- Integrated with a Raspberry Pi 4 module (8GB RAM and 64GB Micro SD Card)
- Can be used as a standalone 100M/1G network TAP with the external monitor port
- Dual DC power inputs for enhancing overall system availability
You can also consider using both: DNS-Collector for DNS-specific collection and routing, with Zeek supplying broader network context. That is an architectural option inferred from their documented roles, not a guaranteed or turnkey integration. Before adopting it, validate event overlap, data flow, privacy requirements, and who will maintain each component.
What is known about Zeek 9.0 and performance
In September 2026, the Zeek Project announced Zeek 9.0 as a long-term-support release and highlighted direct processing of encapsulated packet streams for cloud environments. Check the release documentation for supported encapsulations and deployment requirements before relying on that capability.
The official materials cited here do not provide a DNS-Collector-versus-Zeek benchmark using a shared workload and configuration. They therefore do not establish which tool is faster or uses fewer resources. Choose based on collection inputs, visibility, analysis goals, and integration needs rather than an unsupported throughput comparison.
