To reduce screen flicker, first check whether a different refresh rate supported by both your computer and display changes the symptom. If flicker varies with brightness, the display’s light source or dimming electronics may be involved; if the image is hard to view because of reflections, adjust the screen and room lighting. These are different causes, so no single setting fixes every case.
Identify what kind of flicker you are noticing
“Flicker” describes a visible or uncomfortable effect, not one specific fault. It can relate to how often a display updates its image, rapid changes in the light it emits, or reflections and lighting around the workstation. A change in symptoms when you alter a setting can help narrow down which explanation is more plausible, but it does not by itself prove the cause.

Compare supported refresh-rate settings
Refresh rate is one factor in perceived flicker, not a universal remedy. The FAA’s flight-deck display guidance says: “The display refresh rate should be sufficient to prevent flicker effects that result in misleading information or difficulty in reading or interpreting information.” That guidance concerns aviation displays, so it should not be treated as a prescribed setting for every consumer monitor.
- Check which refresh-rate modes are supported by both the connected computer and the display.
- If more than one supported mode is available, compare them and note whether the symptom changes.
- Use a mode supported by both devices; do not assume that choosing a particular frequency will resolve every flicker complaint.
Historical U.S. Department of Transportation guidance gives recommendations for non-interlaced CRT displays, including at least 80 Hz and preferably 100 Hz or higher in its stated context. Those are historical CRT design recommendations, not a universal threshold for modern LCD, OLED, or other consumer screens. The document also notes that flicker perception varies between people and may be more apparent in peripheral vision or across a larger screen. Check whether brightness changes the symptom
LED and OLED systems can respond rapidly to changes in drive current. A display’s driver or dimmer waveform can also create temporal changes in emitted light; the details depend on the implementation. Some systems use pulse-width modulation (PWM) as part of dimming. This makes brightness behavior worth checking, but it does not establish that every LED or OLED display flickers or that one brightness level is a cure. The U.S. Department of Energy describes temporal light modulation in its flicker research, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory reviews stimulus, responses, and measurement of temporal light modulation in its November 4, 2022 review.
If the symptom changes as you adjust brightness, consult the maker’s documentation for the exact display or device. There is no universal brightness setting or device-menu path established here, and a change in symptoms is a clue rather than a diagnosis.

Reduce reflections and improve workstation lighting
Glare can make a screen harder to view without being a panel or electrical flicker problem. OSHA advises arranging the monitor and workstation to reduce reflections and support clear viewing. Try these environment changes:

- Review the monitor’s placement and viewing setup using OSHA’s guidance on workstation environment and monitor placement and viewing.
These steps address glare and viewing comfort; they do not repair electrical or panel flicker.

Decide whether the display is the likely source
Before replacing equipment, observe whether the symptom follows one display, changes with a supported refresh mode or brightness adjustment, or appears to track the room’s lighting and reflections. This comparison helps distinguish a display-related issue from an environmental one without assuming that any one observation proves the cause.
If the display remains the likely source, a monitor with documented flicker-reduction characteristics is a reasonable category to consider. Verify specifications for the exact model and, where relevant, how it behaves across brightness settings. Generic “flicker-free” wording alone does not establish performance in every mode or guarantee relief for an individual viewer. OSHA’s monitor guidance also addresses selection, placement, viewing distance, and image clarity.
