A journaling file system records selected filesystem changes in a log so it can restore filesystem consistency after a crash or power loss. It can help prevent the filesystem’s structure from being left half-updated, but it is not a backup and does not guarantee that every recent file change will survive.
What is a journaling file system?
A journaling file system is a file system that keeps a log, called a journal, of selected changes before or while applying them to their usual locations. The journal gives the operating system a record to check if an interruption occurs during an update.

The main goal is consistency: keeping filesystem structures such as metadata in a valid state so the system can use the volume again. What the journal protects depends on the file system and its configuration. Some journal metadata only; others can also journal file contents.
How does journaling work?
- Changes are grouped into a transaction. The file system records information about a related set of updates in the journal.
- A completed transaction gets a commit record. This marks that the transaction finished and can be considered during recovery.
- After a crash, the file system checks the journal. It replays completed transactions to bring filesystem structures back into a consistent state.
- Unfinished or invalid transactions are discarded. In ext4, transactions without a commit record, or with invalid checksums, are not replayed. See the Linux kernel’s ext4 journal documentation.
This process helps avoid metadata being left partway through an update. It does not mean every recent operation is rolled forward: an interrupted transaction may not have committed, and its changes may be discarded.

Does journaling prevent data loss?
No. Journaling can reduce the risk of filesystem corruption, but it is not a guarantee that the newest contents of every file will be recovered. A filesystem may be structurally consistent after recovery even if a recent file write is missing or incomplete.
In ext4, the default behavior journals filesystem metadata rather than all file data. The Linux kernel documentation explains that ext4’s data modes determine how file contents are handled, so the word “journaling” alone does not specify how much data protection a filesystem provides.

What are ext4’s journaling modes?
These modes describe ext4 specifically; other journaling file systems may work differently. The Linux kernel’s ext4 General Information and journal documentation describe the following choices:

|---|---|---|
writeback |
Metadata is journaled, but file data is not ordered before metadata writes. | Typically the fastest mode, but file contents recently written before a crash may be inconsistent. |
ordered |
Metadata is journaled, and associated data blocks are written before the metadata is committed. | This is ext4’s documented default mode. It protects metadata, but does not journal all file contents. |
journal |
Both file data and metadata are written through the journal. | Provides stronger data-consistency behavior, but is slower in the documented comparison. |
These are trade-offs between performance and the degree to which file contents are covered. Even the journal mode should not be treated as a substitute for backups.

What does a journal’s size mean?
The ext4 journal documentation says up to 10,240,000 filesystem blocks may be reserved inside ext4 for the journal. That figure is an ext4 implementation detail, not a general limit for journaling file systems; it does not describe a universal journal size or recovery guarantee.
