How to Reduce RAM Usage in Windows 11 Without Breaking Essential Features

Use Task Manager to find memory-heavy apps, then make selective startup and background changes. Learn when to close apps, run a clean boot, or consider a RAM upgrade.

To reduce RAM use safely in Windows 11, first identify the apps consuming memory in Task Manager. Then disable only unnecessary startup apps, limit background activity only for apps whose notifications and syncing you can live without, and close unused programs or browser tabs. Avoid stopping unfamiliar processes or security software: high memory use and slow performance can have causes beyond RAM.

Find out what is using memory

Check actual usage before changing settings. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Processes, and sort by the Memory column. To see overall memory use, open Performance > Memory. Microsoft recommends monitoring memory and closing apps you are not using; it also notes that slow performance can stem from several causes, including limited storage, startup apps, outdated software, or aging hardware. Microsoft’s performance guidance does not imply that RAM is always the cause.

If a familiar app is using a lot of memory and you do not need it right now, save your work and close it normally. Do not end unfamiliar processes just because their names are unclear; Windows and essential apps need background processes to function.

Disable only startup apps you do not need

Apps that launch when you sign in can use memory even when you are not actively using them. Review them in either of these places:

  • Settings > Apps > Startup
  • Task Manager > Startup apps

Turn off only apps that do not need to be ready at sign-in. In Task Manager, startup impact labels include None, Not Measured, Low, Medium, and High. They describe the app’s impact on startup, not a guaranteed amount of RAM you will recover by disabling it. Check what an app does before changing it: chat tools, cloud-sync utilities, accessibility features, security software, and peripheral utilities may provide functions you rely on. See Microsoft’s instructions for configuring startup applications.

Limit background activity without losing features you need

For apps that support it, Windows lets you choose how they run in the background. The route in current Microsoft guidance is Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app’s More options] > Advanced options > Background app permissions. Depending on the app and Windows release, the setting or route may not be available.

Option What it means Use it when
Always The app can run in the background. You need its background activity, such as timely updates or notifications.
Power optimized Windows balances power use while allowing notifications and periodic updates. You want background features to remain available while Windows manages power use.
Never The app cannot run in the background. You do not need its background notifications or updates.

Choose Never only if you are comfortable missing that app’s background notifications and updates. Desktop apps generally do not appear in this list; change their background behavior in the app’s own settings instead. Microsoft explains the available background app permissions.

Close unused apps and browser tabs

Close programs and tabs you no longer need, particularly when you are working with a large workload. If the PC still feels sluggish, save open work and restart Windows; a restart can clear apps or processes that have accumulated during a long session. Microsoft includes closing unused apps and restarting among its performance recommendations.

If the problem returns, note which apps were open and what you were doing when memory use climbed. That pattern is more useful for finding the cause than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

Use a clean boot to investigate conflicts, not as a permanent fix

A clean boot starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can investigate whether background software is causing a conflict. It is a diagnostic step, not a routine way to run a PC: disabling non-Microsoft services and startup apps can temporarily remove functionality.

Consider a RAM upgrade only after checking the PC

If memory pressure persists during the workload you actually need, additional RAM may help—but only if your particular computer supports an upgrade. Check the exact PC model’s specifications for supported memory type, maximum capacity, and whether its memory is replaceable. Do not assume that a kit compatible with one Windows 11 PC will fit another.

Microsoft’s broad guidance in “All about computer memory” says 4 GB may suit primarily browsing, documents, or online video; it recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term; and says 16 GB or more may fit photo or video editing and other high-performance work. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee for every Windows 11 configuration or workload. Microsoft summarizes the benefit this way: “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.”
