Adder vs Grass Snake: How to Tell Them Apart

The clearest clues are an adder’s dark back zigzag and a grass snake’s pale collar. Colour, size and habitat can help, but none is conclusive.

Look for the pattern: an adder usually has a dark zigzag running down its back, while a grass snake usually has a pale yellow or yellow-and-black collar behind its head and dark bars along its sides. These markings are useful clues, not guarantees. Adders are venomous, so keep your distance from any snake you cannot identify.

How to distinguish an adder from a grass snake

Check the back and neck first, rather than judging by overall colour. If you can see the animal clearly from a safe distance, compare the main markings:

Feature Adder Grass snake
Back and sides Usually a dark zigzag along the back; a dark V or X mark on the head may also be visible. Usually no adder-like back zigzag; often has dark bars along the flanks.
Neck and head May appear to have a wider head and distinct neck. Often has a pale yellow or yellow-and-black collar behind the head.
Typical colour Males are often grey and females often brown, but colour varies. Often grey-green, but background colour and markings vary.
Approximate adult length 60–80 cm, according to the Woodland Trust’s 2026 guide; Dover District Council gives about 55 cm as typical. Up to 1.5 m, according to the Woodland Trust; Dover District Council says about 150 cm is possible.
Habitat clue Often found in open, sunny places suitable for basking, including heathland, moorland and open woodland. Often associated with water and may visit garden ponds.
Venom Venomous; it is the UK’s only venomous native snake. Non-venomous.

The length figures are approximate, and sources differ on typical adder size. Size is not a reliable way to identify a snake on its own.

Why colour and markings can mislead

Neither species has one fixed appearance. Adders can be melanistic, so their usual pattern may be hard to see. Grass snakes vary too; some have a less conspicuous collar or lack the usual collar marking. A distant, brief or partial view may hide the features that matter most.

Use the overall pattern when it is visible: the adder’s back zigzag versus the grass snake’s collar and flank bars. Do not treat colour, head shape or any single detail as proof. In particular, do not approach a snake to inspect its eyes or other close-up features.

Where they may be seen in the UK

Habitat can support an identification, but it cannot confirm one. Adders are associated with open basking places such as heathland, moorland and open woodland. Grass snakes are often found near water, including garden ponds.

The Woodland Trust describes grass snakes as occurring throughout England and Wales, but not Scotland or Northern Ireland. That is a broad UK range description, not a guarantee about a particular sighting. British and western European grass snakes were reclassified in 2017 as Natrix helvetica, distinct from Natrix natrix in central and eastern Europe, according to the Woodland Trust.

What to do if you cannot identify the snake

  • Keep a safe distance and do not touch, catch or handle it.
  • Do not move closer to get a better look or photograph; rely on visible markings from where you are.
  • If you suspect an adder bite, seek medical attention promptly. Dover District Council advises immediate medical attention after a bite.
  • Observe wild reptiles from a distance. The Woodland Trust says UK reptiles are protected by national law; for a specific legal question, check current official legislation and local guidance.

Could it be another animal?

If the markings do not fit either snake, avoid forcing a choice. The smooth snake is another native UK snake. A slow worm can look snake-like, but it is a legless lizard, not a snake. Keep your distance when uncertain.
