For a controller check, connect it with a USB data cable and set the console to use USB communication; simply plugging in a cable does not switch the controller from Bluetooth.
First, separate controller problems from network problems
Button presses that seem delayed, a controller that disconnects, and an online match that drops are different symptoms. A controller-to-console communication problem is not the same as a PS5 internet or server connection problem, and the symptom alone does not identify the cause.

- If the controller responds normally in the PS5 menus or local play but online play disconnects, check the console’s internet connection separately.
- If the controller itself feels delayed or loses its connection to the console, start with the wired controller test below.
For a PS5 network error such as NP-104627-0, Sony recommends testing the connection at Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection, then checking router and wired-network connections as appropriate. Follow Sony’s network troubleshooting guidance; a network error by itself does not show that the controller is faulty.

Test controller communication over USB
A USB cable can charge the DualSense while the controller continues to communicate with the PS5 over Bluetooth. To make a wired communication test, connect the controller to the console, then select Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method > Use USB Cable. Sony explains that with Use Bluetooth selected, the controller still communicates over Bluetooth even when a USB cable is attached. See PlayStation Support’s controller communication settings.

This gives you a useful way to compare wired USB communication with wireless Bluetooth communication. Sony’s guidance does not provide a measured latency comparison or guarantee that switching modes will eliminate perceived lag.
Make sure the USB cable carries data
For Sony’s documented connection procedure, use a cable that supports charge and sync or charging and data. A charge-only cable cannot be used for that procedure. If the controller does not connect as expected, Sony recommends trying another USB port or a different suitable cable. A known-good data-capable cable makes the test meaningful; it does not imply that a particular retail cable has been tested. Sony’s DualSense support page has the cable guidance.

Update PS5 and DualSense software
Check that the PS5 system software is up to date. Sony says DualSense device software updates are added when PS5 system software is updated, and provides a manual controller-software check at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. Menu wording can vary by system software or region; this is the path shown in Sony’s support guidance.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Reset the controller and reconnect it
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller from its USB cable.
- On the back of the controller, find the small recessed reset hole next to the Sony logo.
- Use a pin or similar tool to press and hold the reset button for at least five seconds. Sony notes that the tool is not included with the controller.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 using the official USB cable, then press the PS button.
These are Sony’s US reset instructions; follow the official DualSense reset guidance if your regional support page or system menus differ.
