To shrink Playwright screenshots while keeping them readable, first capture fewer pixels: use scale: 'css' when device-pixel detail is unnecessary, and capture only the relevant element or region instead of the whole page. If lossy compression is acceptable, use JPEG or WebP and compare quality settings on representative pages. Keep PNG or lossless WebP when exact visual detail matters.
Choose the right format for the job
Playwright’s Page screenshot API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. PNG is lossless, but its quality option is ignored. JPEG and WebP accept a quality value; for WebP, quality 100 is lossless and lower values use lossy compression. JPEG’s documented default quality is 80. - Use PNG when preserving exact pixels is important and file size is secondary.
- Use WebP when you want adjustable compression and need to compare lossless and lossy output.
- Use JPEG for photographic or general review artifacts when lossy compression is acceptable.
There is no universally correct quality value: compression can affect small text, thin borders, gradients, and high-contrast edges differently. Treat any value as a starting point and inspect the result at its intended viewing size.

Use CSS scale when device-pixel detail is unnecessary
With scale: 'css', the output uses one pixel per CSS pixel. Playwright documents this as a way to keep screenshots small on high-DPI devices. scale: 'device' captures device pixels and can produce images twice as large or more. Choose device scale only when the extra resolution is useful to the person or system consuming the image.

Capture only the necessary area
A viewport screenshot is smaller than a full-page screenshot when the page scrolls beyond the viewport. If the task concerns one component, capture its locator; for a precise rectangle, use the Page API’s clip option. A full-page capture includes the entire scrollable page, so its pixel count can be much higher. The Playwright Screenshots guide covers page, full-page, locator, and buffer screenshots.
Example: save a smaller WebP screenshot
This example uses WebP quality 85 as an illustration, not an official recommended threshold. Compare it with a lossless output on your own pages before adopting it.

});For a bounded region, set clip on page.screenshot() with the rectangle you need. Keep the rectangle tight enough to exclude irrelevant content, but not so tight that it cuts off labels, shadows, or context needed for review.

Keep visual-regression snapshots lossless
Playwright Test screenshot assertions support PNG and WebP snapshots, described in the assertion documentation as lossless formats. Avoid substituting lossy JPEG for an exact visual-regression baseline: compression artifacts can change pixels and obscure whether a difference came from the page or the encoding. If file size is a concern in a test pipeline, first reduce capture scope or use CSS scale where appropriate. Keep the snapshot format and settings consistent between baseline generation and comparison.

Validate the tradeoff on real pages
- Choose representative pages, including dense text, thin lines, gradients, and image-heavy areas.
- Capture a lossless reference and the smaller candidate using the same viewport and page state.
- Inspect both at the size at which people or downstream tools will use them. Zoom in on small text and high-contrast edges.
- Check that the crop includes all required context and that CSS scale retains adequate detail.
- Adopt the smallest output that remains clear for the actual task; do not assume a particular quality number or savings percentage will work everywhere.
Playwright can also return screenshot bytes as a buffer for downstream processing or pixel-diff workflows. Any later re-encoding should be validated in the same way, because processing does not remove the fidelity tradeoff.
Troubleshooting large or unclear screenshots
- The file is still large: Check whether you are capturing the full scrollable page or using device scale. Reduce the capture area or use CSS scale if the workflow permits.
- Text or edges look smeared: Raise the lossy quality setting, switch to lossless WebP or PNG, or capture at device scale if the additional pixels are required.
- Changing
qualityhas no effect: The screenshot is PNG; Playwright ignores the quality option for PNG. - A visual test reports unexpected differences: Confirm that baseline and current screenshots use matching capture dimensions, scale, scope, and lossless encoding. Do not treat lossy compression as an exact-pixel snapshot.
- A full-page capture is much larger than expected: It includes the page’s full scrollable content, not just the visible viewport. Capture a locator or clip if only part of the page is needed.
