There is no universal monthly price for running a 24/7 YouTube stream from a NAS with FFmpeg. The clearest estimate is your equipment’s average measured wall draw multiplied by your local electricity rate, plus any internet-plan overage. Keep one-time hardware costs separate. Each extra 1 watt running continuously uses 0.72 kWh in a 30-day month.
Calculate the electricity cost from measured watts

monthly electricity cost = average watts × 0.72 × price per kWh
For a full 365-day year, calculate with 8,760 hours rather than assuming every month has 30 days. Your tariff may include time-of-use rates, taxes, or other charges, so a national average is only a point of comparison.
Measure the equipment that will actually stay on
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the NAS at the wall during representative operation. If the stream depends on a separately powered encoder or dedicated networking equipment, include those devices in a second measurement of the complete setup. An adapter’s maximum rating is not the same as the device’s normal consumption.

If the NAS already runs around the clock for storage, distinguish the whole measured load from the incremental load attributable to streaming. Compare consumption before and during the intended stream; added CPU work or disk activity can change the reading.
A published NAS figure as an illustration, not a quote
Synology lists 14.69 W access consumption for the DS224+. If that draw continued for a 30-day month, it would use 10.5768 kWh. At the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 average residential rate of 17.30 cents/kWh, the arithmetic is about $1.83 for the month, or $22.00 for a year at that same rate. The EIA identifies its 2025 and 2026 data as preliminary estimates; use your own bill rate for a local estimate.
This is a calculation from one model’s published specification and a U.S. historical benchmark—not a measurement of FFmpeg streaming, a prediction for every NAS, or a complete setup cost. Synology lists 4.41 W in HDD hibernation, but reading media and running services may keep disks from hibernating. The DS224+’s listed 60 W adapter rating is power-supply capacity, not a figure to multiply as continuous consumption. See Synology’s power and specification information.

What else can change the total cost?
Encoding workload and NAS model
Passing through compatible encoded media can demand less processing than re-encoding it, but actual draw depends on the NAS model, source codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and FFmpeg configuration. There is no established performance result for an unspecified NAS and stream. Do not assume a NAS can encode a particular job: test the intended workload and measure it.

Internet use and possible data charges
A continuous 5 Mbps stream sends approximately 2.25 GB per hour in decimal units before overhead: 5 megabits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte. That is about 54 GB per day, or 1.62 TB in a 30-day month. It is an arithmetic estimate, not guaranteed billed traffic; protocol overhead and provider units or rounding can change the total. Whether this costs extra depends on your ISP’s data cap and overage terms.
Hardware and resilience
Keep the NAS purchase, disk replacement, and any uninterruptible power supply (UPS) separate from the recurring electricity estimate. A UPS is an optional resilience expense for brief interruptions; its runtime depends on the battery and connected load, and conversion losses can add power use. Do not assume a particular runtime without a configuration-specific estimate.

Choose YouTube ingest settings for the stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP and RTMPS ingest; it recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options. For the settings it specifies, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended H.264 bitrates vary by resolution and frame rate:
| H.264 format | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations for the listed H.264 formats, not electricity-use figures. Higher bitrate increases network demand; if FFmpeg is re-encoding, workload choices can also affect compute demand. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. As YouTube Help puts it: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use a server URL and stream key
An encoder setup uses YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key. Configure FFmpeg or the workflow around it for the ingest method and encoding settings you have chosen; do not expose the stream key, since it grants access to send video to your channel. YouTube’s setup instructions are in Create a live stream with an encoder.

Plan the archive and rights separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 stream will receive a complete 24-hour video-on-demand archive. Check the channel’s live-stream setup and archive needs before relying on a recording. You must also have the rights needed to stream the video and audio you use; uninterrupted playback does not make copyrighted or otherwise unauthorized material permissible.
Ways to keep a YouTube stream running
- StreamNeo — cloud looping: StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the service loops the upload from the cloud. StreamNeo says each slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Pricing options are Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year. India visitors can pay with UPI or cards; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo for current details.
- Run FFmpeg on your own NAS: This uses hardware you control, but the NAS and required local network equipment must remain powered and connected, and you are responsible for measuring power, maintaining the setup, and handling reconnects.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting a cost estimate or stream
- Your electricity estimate seems implausibly high: Check that you used watts rather than kilowatts in the formula, and do not treat the power adapter’s capacity as continuous draw. Measure at the wall.
- Your measured consumption differs from the NAS specification: The published figure is model-specific and may not match active disk use, FFmpeg encoding, containers, or other services. Measure during the actual workload.
- The stream stutters or YouTube reports poor health: Check the available upload bitrate and the selected resolution/frame rate, then confirm the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Test before relying on a long-running stream.
- The monthly internet total is higher than expected: The 5 Mbps example is before overhead. Check your ISP’s usage accounting, data cap, and overage terms rather than assuming the arithmetic estimate is your billable volume.
- The stream stops after a local outage: Check power, network connectivity, and the FFmpeg process on the NAS. If interruption risk matters, consider a UPS, but estimate runtime for the actual load and battery rather than assuming a generic figure.
