Wait for the actual content, trigger any scroll-dependent loading, and check whether the material is inside a separate scrollable panel before changing screenshot settings.
What fullPage: true does—and does not do
Use the page screenshot API with fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable document rather than just the current viewport:

It cannot make a request complete, hydrate a component, expand a collapsed section, or cause an infinite list to fetch more rows. The Playwright Page API documents fullPage as an optional boolean that defaults to false. The documentation is rolling and does not pin this behavior to a particular release.
Diagnose the missing content before changing the screenshot
Identify whether the expected material is absent from the DOM, waiting on a scroll trigger, inside a nested scrolling region, or present but outside the captured page area. These causes need different fixes.

Check whether the content exists
Wait for a locator or application state that represents the content you need in the image. For example, use a known heading or the final item in a list as the readiness condition. A quiet network alone does not prove the interface is complete: Playwright defines networkidle as no network connections for at least 500 ms and discourages using it as a test readiness signal. Prefer web assertions tied to the expected content, as described in the Page API.

Trigger loading that depends on scrolling
Some pages fetch or render more content only when a user scrolls near it. Trigger the same behavior in the test, then wait for the new content before taking the screenshot. Playwright’s current scrolling guidance specifically describes manual scrolling as a way to force an infinite list to load more elements; that guidance is under the /docs/next/ path and is not a version-pinned guarantee.

If loading requires a button, pagination action, or another interaction, use that interaction instead of assuming a scroll will be enough. A fixed sleep can hide a race without proving that the expected data arrived.

Check for a nested scroll container
A page can contain a panel with its own scrollbar, separate from the main document. Page-level full-page capture and an element screenshot are not interchangeable with capturing the panel’s entire internal scroll range. The Playwright ElementHandle API documents that a screenshot of a scrollable element shows only its currently scrolled content.
Find the element whose scrollTop changes as you scroll the missing list. If the full list is required, scroll that container and verify the desired items have rendered. Depending on the design, you may need to capture the panel in multiple states or use an application-specific way to expose all items; do not assume a page screenshot will expand the panel’s internal scroll area.

Verify that the option is on the page screenshot call
If the content exists and is part of the main document but is clipped at the viewport boundary, confirm that fullPage: true is set on page.screenshot(). A locator or element screenshot is a different capture target and does not become a full-document screenshot merely because another call uses that option.

- Confirm the target. Decide whether you need the whole document, a particular panel, or an element. Use
page.screenshot()for a page capture andfullPage: truewhen you need the full scrollable document. - Assert the expected content before capture. Wait for the specific heading, list item, or application state that should appear in the image. If it is absent from the DOM, investigate the data request, pagination, hydration, or conditional rendering rather than adjusting screenshot dimensions.
- Reproduce the user’s loading action. Scroll to a lower-page target or use the page’s actual load-more interaction. Wait for the newly expected content, then capture.
- Inspect overflow areas. If the list scrolls independently of the page, target and scroll that container. An element screenshot of a scrollable region reflects its current scroll position.
- Separate missing data from visual instability. If the content is present but the image varies between runs, stabilize the application state and test environment. Consider disabling animations for motion-related variation, not as a remedy for data that never loaded.
When a screenshot test is unstable rather than incomplete
Playwright’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots produce the same result before comparing the result with the expectation, according to its visual comparison documentation. That can reduce comparison noise, but stable images do not establish that the desired content was ever loaded. Keep the application state and rendering environment consistent between baseline and comparison runs: Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.

If animation changes the captured image, the element screenshot API documents animations: 'disabled' as an option. Use it to reduce motion-related differences after the expected content is present; it will not load missing data or trigger pagination.

Does fullPage: true scroll the page to load everything?
No. It captures the full scrollable page but does not itself trigger application loading. Scroll or interact as the page requires, then verify the expected content before capture.
Should I wait for networkidle before taking the screenshot?
For test readiness, Playwright discourages using networkidle; assert the actual content or application state you need instead.
