Start with your drinking-water results and local guidance—not a filter purchase. Public-water customers can ask their utility about PFAS testing; private-well owners should arrange testing through a state-certified laboratory. If results or local advice indicate treatment is appropriate, choose a filter certified specifically for PFAS reduction, verify the exact model in a current certification directory, and maintain it on schedule. Other steps can address particular exposure sources, but no single change can make a home PFAS-free.
What can cause PFAS exposure at home?
PFAS is a broad class of chemicals, not one substance. Potential exposure sources include drinking water, contaminated sites, food and exposed fish, and some consumer products. Which sources matter depends on local conditions and the specific chemicals involved; the presence of PFAS in a product category does not show that a particular item or household is contaminated.

In some contaminated places, drinking water can contribute significantly to total PFAS exposure, but the contribution varies with water concentrations and other environmental conditions. EPA also identifies household dust and products such as stain- or water-repellent fabrics, carpets and upholstery, cleaning products, nonstick cookware, paints, varnishes, and sealants as possible pathways. Young children may have greater exposure potential because they crawl on floors, put objects in their mouths, and take in more food, water, and air relative to body weight.

If your home uses public water
- Ask your water utility for its PFAS test results and any notices or treatment information for your service area.
- Check your state or local health department for additional guidance, including advice relevant to your address.
- Use those results and recommendations to decide whether household treatment is warranted. EPA notes that a filter may not be useful if PFAS have not been measured or are below federal limits; a filter is not automatically necessary for every home.
For current federal standards and proposed changes, consult EPA’s PFAS drinking-water regulation information and your utility. EPA’s 2026 proposal would keep the PFOA and PFOS limits while allowing eligible systems to request up to two additional years, through 2031, to comply. It also proposes rescinding and reconsidering standards for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), and a hazard-index mixture that includes PFBS. These are proposals, not final changes. A public-water-system limit is not a substitute for your home’s test result or medical advice.

- Space-saving design: Our BPA-free pour-through filtered water pitchers and water dispensers fit easily into small refrigerators or stand elegantly on your countertop, saving you space without sacrificing style.
If your home uses a private well
- Contact your state environmental or health agency to ask about PFAS testing and how to find a state-certified laboratory using EPA-developed methods.
- Arrange testing regularly, and seek local guidance if the well is known or suspected to be affected.
- If local authorities advise using an alternative source, follow their directions for water used for drinking, preparing food, cooking, brushing teeth, preparing infant formula, and other uses where water may be swallowed.
Well owners have a separate responsibility to arrange testing; public-utility test results do not establish whether a private well is affected. See EPA’s guidance for private wells and PFAS.
Does a water filter remove PFAS?
Some point-of-use filters can reduce PFAS in drinking water, but performance depends on the technology, exact model, PFAS compounds present, water conditions, and maintenance. EPA identifies granular activated carbon (GAC), reverse osmosis (RO), and ion-exchange resins as treatment technologies that can reduce PFAS. Point-of-use options include pitchers, faucet-mounted filters, and under-sink systems.

- Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
- Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
- Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
- Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
- Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.
For a purchase, look for NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 certification specifically for PFAS reduction, then verify the exact model and the compounds it treats in a current accredited certification-body directory. A general NSF claim or wording such as “removes contaminants” does not establish PFAS reduction. EPA’s certification guidance, which was described as of April 2024, focused on PFOA and PFOS and cautioned that the standards did not establish reductions down to the levels in EPA’s newer drinking-water standard. Certification is not a promise of a particular health outcome or of reduction to every regulatory benchmark. Check the current directory and criteria before buying. See EPA’s guide to identifying filters certified to reduce PFAS.

Compare treatment options after confirming a water concern
| Option | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Granular activated carbon (GAC) | EPA identifies GAC as a technology that can reduce PFAS. Check that the exact model is certified specifically for the PFAS compounds of concern, and compare replacement intervals, cost, and fit for your water. |
| Ion-exchange resin | EPA identifies ion exchange as a technology that can reduce PFAS. Confirm model-specific PFAS certification and account for maintenance and replacement needs. |
| Reverse osmosis (RO) | EPA identifies RO as a technology that can reduce PFAS. Its overview describes systems costing about $150–$1,000 before maintenance; this is a source-era estimate, not a current quote. EPA says the systems it describes waste about one gallon per gallon treated, require cartridge and membrane changes, and may need additional treatment depending on incoming water quality. |
EPA’s broader home-filter page gives a source-era price range of about $20 to more than $1,000, depending on filter type and installation, before maintenance; it is not a current product quote. These ranges do not identify a best model. Compare the exact PFAS compounds covered, current independent certification, initial and replacement costs, filter life, installation, water use, disposal, and whether the unit fits your household’s water conditions.

Maintain the filter as directed
Follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule for cartridges and, where applicable, membranes. EPA warns that filters only work as intended when maintained according to instructions; replacing a filter late can increase exposure risk. A certified model that is overdue for maintenance should not be assumed to keep performing as stated. Read EPA’s overview of reducing PFAS in drinking water with a home filter.

- Follow local fish advisories. Check state or tribal advisories for fish from affected waterways, and avoid fish where authorities advise against eating it. EPA specifically recommends avoiding fish from waterways with PFAS advisories.
- Review product information where available. Look for PFAS-free labeling and consult Safety Data Sheets, but treat labels as product information—not proof that a claim has been independently verified or that your home is PFAS-free.
- Prioritize known contamination and local advice. Possible exposure pathways do not establish that every product in a category is a meaningful source in your home. The available guidance does not justify discarding household belongings without item-specific evidence.
EPA’s PFAS overview describes sources including contaminated sites, firefighting foam, manufacturing waste, consumer products, food packaging, biosolids, and exposed fish, dairy, meat, or vegetables. The presence of a possible pathway is not proof of a person’s exposure or a reason to make a sweeping product swap.
